Found this today for $2, I don't believe the handle is original.
great find! buy a cheaper Proto hammer with the right handle and swap it over! I have been looking for plomb and P&C hammers a lot lately...

You can get spot on hammer handles from a company called dagger tools! They sell octagonal hammer handles that are the same size as plomb body hammer handles! I just bought 4 of them and will be putting one in a picking hammer head! I will post some pictures when I do it next to an original I have so you can see how close they are in appearance !

cool I'll have to check them out I got a $4 Paschall BPH head in other day needs a handle.
Here is a recent addition to my Plomb plier collection. This pair of #236 parrot head pliers almost has a gun bluing type finish to them. Not sure if that will come through in the pictures. I haven't had time to clean these up any and it really won't take much other than just to remove a bit of grime. All the other Plomb pliers I have are much more worn and none of the rest have had this blue finish. Does anyone know if this was standard on Plomb pliers? Thanks.
Yes, you **** for that score !

Yes. All the pliers are shown with what is explicitly called a "gun-metal" finish in Catalog 19-R FOURTH PRINTING, which I date to no earlier than November 1946. The pliers in Catalog 19-R REPRINT, which I date to no earlier than February 1944, and no later than October 1946, do no have this finish. This pair of #236 parrot head pliers almost has a gun bluing type finish to them...[ ]...Does anyone know if this was standard on Plomb pliers?

Thanks Lugz. So it appears that the later pliers did indeed have the gun metal finish. This is the only pair I have seen like this.Yes. EDIT: Added an excerpt
I can't seem to locate the hammer handles on Dagger Tools' website. (?)
Here's a suitable handle on ebay, but it's overpriced by at least 100%:

Picked up a couple a few years ago at a swap meet for about $3 each. Still haven't used them, but got 'em when I need them!Call them and ask them... When I called them, their stock was very low and it was not listed on the site. They where very helpful and sold/ shipped them in the phone! The guy told me I bought the last 4 they had in stock so hopefully they have since bought more .

Yours were made in 1946. It's not very often that we can be that precise dating any tool, especially Plomb, but in this case, it works out. If they were "MADE" with that finish, it could be any time before 1945, and if they had the "gun-metal" finish, they could only have been made in 1947 and perhaps 1948, before the move to PROTO markings.Mine are 238 but they didnt come with that finish.
Probably all pre-1947.Interesting. I have a number of Plomb pliers, several in good shape, and, IIRC, none show any evidence of a blued finish.
Yep, I think yours are blued. As good as they look now, can you imagine how they must have looked new?! I wound up getting the Ballistol out of my gun cleaning kit to clean mine this morning.I took a look at my Plomb longnoses and the handles are pretty dark. I had never really paid attention to it before.

Just as a reminder, Don, I have a February 1948 Plombaloy, shown about ten pages ago when we were at the tail end of a little deep dive on the subject of when the dual-marked Plomb (forged-in)/Proto (stamped) tools were actually made, and when they were actually introduced. I haven't seen a Plomb only marked adjustable newer than that.Probably the last year (1947) of Plomb marking and the Danielson broached hole.
This came today. My first Plomb 4" adjustable. pretty nice!
How about probably the last full year of Plomb marking? The change must have taken place sometime in '48. Here is a dual marked drag link bit that I picked up for my own amusement. Nice! I saw a 12" Plomb on Ebay, but it is HIGH!I like the adjustable... I need a 12" = now! got 4,6, 8, and 10
You and me both, but in this case I was one of the ringleaders. I wasn't correcting you, so much as catching you up in case you missed it.10 pages ago? I can barely remember what was posted on the previous page.![]()
That's debatable, and the precise subject of the discussion I am referring to.d42jeep said:How about probably the last full year of Plomb marking? The change must have taken place sometime in '48.
looking through the Plomb facebook group yesterday at some of the older pics, someone had a Plomb toolbox that was dual marked! Only one I have ever seen. anyone have one of those?
You mean like this ?![]()
I think this is one of old man Taylor's? I think I snagged this picture off this thread about a year ago ? Not mine although I wish it was though ! Don't think I have ever seen a dual mark stamped box but I have seen a few dual mark painted or stickered boxes !
