Roy,

Once you get it up and running, if I ever get that far east again, I'll stop by for a 5 cent cup of coffee and visit my wrenches again. You offer free ice water?
You are welcome anytime.
I used to stop there on the way to rapid city. Good buffalo burgers.
Never had a buffalo burger from there. Will have to give it a try on the next time through.
Wow, Dedicated ROOMS for a tool maker. I thought I was doing good with a couple of dedicated boxes...
Only one room and only for one. Have made Plomb my main focus selling and trading my other brands to complete holes.
I managed to find a few tool from the Plomb/Proto empire today. The second and third shot are the Plomb cleaned up.
-Don
Nice find Don. Love how common they are over on the coast.

Finally got my combos up. 2 complete sets with just the LAs needing to fill some gaps.

Up next is adjustables and pipe wrenches.
Followed by the ever large amount of open ends including DOEs, SOEs, Tappets, and Flares. That may take 2 boards.IMG_20190316_114751073_HDR.jpgIMG_20190316_114803218_HDR.jpegIMG_20190316_114810107_HDR.jpeg

Nice Plomb collection you have going there Roy. Looks like it won't be too long before you have those walls full of the good stuff.

I took a short trip to central Oregon this week and found a few Plomb bits at a restore store and also this 9990 box at a different spot. I got to looking it over and comparing it to the 9990 I already had and notice the difference in the drawer slides. I think the green box is older and has the narrow slides. The only other difference was in the small socket shelf at the back of the big compartment where one is a little higher in the cavity than the other.

Also kind of interesting is the apparent green paint in the slide area on what I had assumed was always a red box. The really early 9990's may not have had slides at all like the last pic of a 9999 variant. Anyone else noticed the change in drawer slides on these over time? Might be another way to estimate the age of them. Ed.

Ed, the red over green box has another clue in that the free piece of the slide is painted. All I have ever seen are unpainted steel like your other slide picture above.

You're right Dave. I hadn't considered that. I think I'll look it over closer to see if there are other spots where they may have painted over green. I just assumed it was always red because of how deep they got the color in on the little drawer recesses....but...you know what they say about making assumptions. :)

Nice bendix wrench. Is that a 2010 or 2011?

Arrived at an estate sale at opening time, but a couple local resellers got there early and were scooping everything into their piles.

They missed this.

Nice pebble puller set. I found one but the Plomb had been ground off, and restamped with P&C.
Did you post a pic? I am really curious to see it.

Halfway through the move and trying find places for a couple off ducks.

Here is a one of them. Plomb LA 9/16" combination. Noticed it was shorter at first glance but also it appears Plomb was stamped on the opposite side of the wrench as well. It also has what I believe to be a govt marking in the backside.

Anyone seen something like this before?IMG_20190317_142801545.jpgIMG_20190317_142815070.jpeg

Here’s my plomb finds from today. A 5449 with a 1939 date code and a broken selector, a 8183 DBE, a 3041 DOE, a 3025-s and a 3025, and an elusive 1212 pebble combo. The 3025 is “customized,” but I can’t bring myself to leave any plomb behind.

Here is a picture of the ground off logo and restamp:

That's pretty cool bmw! What do you think the scenario is that they are removing the Plomb stamp and branding it with P&C. If it were after the trademark infringement why not brand them Proto?

Perhaps they had changed the dies to Proto, but had so many Plomb-marked parts in stock that they used them up in the P&C line. Proto was the flagship line, and it would not look "premium" to grind and restamp a higher value product.

P&C was a "local" brand for Pendleton that had a loyal following built up from its reputation for quality prior to the acquisition. Pendleton kept the quality up by keeping it equal to Plomb, but P&C branding was always based on simple markings and styling. The ground and restamped piece fit into that reputation better than the forged-in markings associated with Plomb/Proto.

Well, it's not plated but it is pebble. Just guessing, but I think it is from the late war era and they were starting to market the P&C more with Plomb designed tools and used other factories production for this. But that is just a WAG.

That would go in the 'Never Ever Sell' category. Apart from the middle of the famous 4-way and the pebble field on their cool *** 60's throwback midget ratchet, I don't recall ay P&C pebble. (MR. X or someone more well-versed in P&C could verify that.)

My quickie postulation would be Plomb having so much dead stock that they also moved it to P&C as their subsidiary for re-branding, or just re-branded it P&C in LA.

Yes, the earliest Plomb combo's were short. Yes, I've seen that stamping orientation. Yes I've seen a 34 G date code Plomb tool with a factory USN stamp. Wasn't a combo though.

Didn't even know an "el handle" existed. Could be handy as all get out in the right situation! Nice pick up RT!

I have looked in the wild for 4 years and never laid eyes on a single Plomb version. I have found a husky, a couple of craftsman, and some older octagon style.

A few years ago I went halvsies with tin medic on a huge lot of surplus tools. I did all the work, driving out to the middle of Pennsyltucky to go through this guy's garage, sorting all the junk from the good stuff, making a pile, negotiating the deal, hauling it home, cataloging it, and taking pictures. The plan was to keep some of it and flip the rest. Tin medic put up half the dough, and then proceeded to pick out all the good stuff for himself.

To wit this box of wartime special spec L-handles (double-end offset).

Mostly Mossberg, some Armstrong, but also a no-namer, and the plum of the lot, a Plomb - which he promptly claimed!

Fast forward a few years and I just got it back in a trade. :)

I am happy to show it off here.

And here it is with some other L-handles I have, including a 3/4-inch drive Plomb of the other variety with one business end and a handle, which you guys have see before, still the only Plomb L-handle I have ever seen in the wild.

The markings...

I haven't seen anyone post one of these before. I bought mine 3-4 years ago at the swap, mainly because I was taken aback by the quality of the chrome. I couldn't believe how old it was.
Only later on did I consider the war ban on chrome.

What do you all think: was this thing chromed aftermarket or originally?
The only non polished chrome part is the selector. This thing looks AWESOME.
