About a year ago, I came across something rare at my local restore. I found a speeder, something not too unusual in itself, but I could tell it was an oddball. A Plomb 5482.
What is different about this speeder? It is a 3/8" sized speeder with a 1/2" anvil on it.
Here is a photo to show the difference
Obviously, 3/8 on top, 1/2 on the bottom with the one I found in the middle. So, I started looking to see where this went, and it shows up in a couple sets, mainly the large and super-inclusive types that include deep sockets, flex sockets, and both speeders. But it also shows up, going all the way back to '32 in set 5400K. Which is in a 5295 box, with sockets from 7/16"s to 1", an 18 fold-over and pin-handle. A socket spinner set. Around nine months ago, I found a very beat up Chinese red box of that size.
Lugz, in post 4642, identified this for me as being from 40-41:
And so, rummaging through my Plomb sockets, I found most of the correct ones from before the war and started putting the set together. The breaker bar is borrowed from my wartime master set, and one of the sockets is a dual marked Plomb/Proto, but this is what the set should look like eventually
Interestingly, my two other boxes of this type will not fit the speeder, as the channel on the left is too narrow. Also, I had originally planned to re-paint, but with the speeder being pretty beat up, I'm thinking I will leave it, depending on the final breaker-bar find.
