The Utica made adjustable is in good condition but the Danielson design adjustable is pretty rough. Made in 1947, I imagine that it was one of the last Danielson style wrenches made with the broached hanging hole.

I don't know enough about "modern" PTII era Plomb Empire to answer that. But it was Utica from Day 1 to 10/1946, and Danielson from 11/1946 through at least the early 1950's. I don't know why they would go back to Utica when they owned J.P. Danielson (plant, dies, tooling etc).

EDIT: Roy if your question is stemming from your confusion about the adjustable you didn't recognize as Utica, the easiest way to satisfy yourself is to go to the Utica pages on AA. The earliest Utica adjustable wrench had an open blank panel. The next version had the raised oval pad. And the next version had two sunken panels on either side of a raised pad with convex ends.

I was curious about the time frame regarding the Plomb adjustable wrenches as well so I did come checking. Like Lugz says, AA and the catalog show the first adjustable sourced from Utica. Apparently they were buying wrenches from Danielson before they bought the company which accounts for my wrench dated before the purchase. According to AA they started sourcing from Danielson sometime in 1946. Oddly, AA has an example that Plomb sourced from Diamond with an angled jaw, although I’ve never seen one. Just when I think I’ve got the timeline pretty much figured out, my counterpart in Wales sent me a picture of his that I’ve never seen before. I have no idea who made this one.

Your wrench is marked May 1947, right? Plomb bought Danielson in November 1946.

I have no idea who made this one.

Looks like Utica to me. I don't have one, but if you go to AA, page 2, it is the first adjustable they show. They consider it early. The earliest Plomb catalog I can find with an adjustable is 17B (1939), page 51. The figure is the Utica model with the raised oval pad. Perhaps Plomb was sourcing them from Utica earlier than that and they weren't in the earlier catalogs, or they got some of these style with the smooth blank panel in 1939 before Utica switched to the style with the raised oval pad.

As a follow-up on that topic, as I have said before (during that adjustables deep dive we did a few years ago, linked here), AA's theory that J.P. Danielson was supplying tools to Plomb prior to Plomb acquiring J.P. Danielson seems to be based on them incorrectly dating the acquisition to January 1947.

You may have forgotten that we went through this before early last year. At that time I showed my Plombaloy 708-S adjustable with a broached hanging hole and date code of February 1948. Linked here. Someone else (can't remember who) owns it now.

I was actually going on the dates above. Your previously owned adjustable was REALLY one of the last broached Danielson style adjustables. Len’s wrench is pretty unusual, without the reinforced hanging hole and no raised pad. I wonder if anyone else reading this has a similar one?

I don't think any of mine look like that, but will double check later. I need to go back and look at the earlier study that Lugz referenced, but I did see a transitional example today on Ebay without a reinforced hanger hole that includes a JPD date code.

Don, I have one of those wrench’s you mentioned with no raised pad and no reinforced hole. I have moved and my collection is still packed up so I can’t take pictures right now. My wrench is a 10”.

I have one also, I'll have to dig through my stuff and find it. ill post a pic of it soon. I think it's a 6" I remember its Dark steel with no panels or broaching.

I picked up a couple 10" adjustables this weekend. The first, a Proto LA, has a 1951 date code (T-3-1 ?). The other, a Plomb, has an M-3-8 date and does not appear to have been broached but does have the reinforcement.

That Plomb is quite interesting. That may the latest one I’ve seen yet dated only a couple of months before the dual marked example I posted above. They seem to have discontinued the broaching but stayed with the reinforced hanging hole. With the lawsuit, there must have been a lot of changes taking place.

Sorry if I missed discussion on WF-21s. I searched and didn't see anything. I picked this guy up over the weekend and was surprised not to find any model markings on it, I took the back plate off too thinking maybe it was flipped over, but nothing there either. Did Plomb send these out dry and expect end users to oil/grease them prior to action? In taking it apart it sure didn't look like there had ever been a drop of lubrication in there, it all looked brand new.

I passed on the pebble wrenches. They wanted $1 to $3 for them, depending on size. No want/need for them, and I have too many things to get rid of already. Did take the 3/4" drive proto sockets for $2 each.

I do the same with proto.

As I mentioned in my Kent's Tools thread, linked here, I picked up a few Plomb things yesterday.

The WF-100 angle wrench is unfortunately fairly hideously pitted.

The 3/8-inch drive socket (5214, 7/16" service opening) is one of those that came out of whichever factory had the very fine and light touch roll stamper running. Do you guys know the kind I mean? With an extremely thin font and hardly no impression.
