I swear I am not laughing at you, but with you, Roy - because this is literally the story of all our inherently bipolar toolhound lives! :)
Haha,
I should add more clarity. I am trying to downsize anything that I am not actively collecting. The urges are hard to resist and I am a weak man.

From the "Steam Up" today. An A. Plomb heavy duty single end. A 3/4" drive WF 63 1 7/16 socket and a 1" drive 17 1/2" long extension 5863 looks like it's been used maybe once.

Nice. I don't know if I have ever seen a WF 3/4" drive socket.

This post pretty much sums up most of our tool collecting experiences.... I have looked for some items for years, given up and then seems like the next day or next swap meet, I find it! We can all very much relate! Can’t wait to see this score!

R_olson asked for a few pictures. Here's the "unsorted" stuff I've picked up in the last year or so. I'm keeping them in one of the extra Toolmobiles until I can sort them into the right boxes or with similar tools. My first Toolmobile is already to it's max capacity.

My 3 Toolmobiles, the 2 on the left I'm going to strip and restore. Both have been repainted poorly. The right one is in its original paint. It's sitting on blocks because the original rubber wheels started to crumble under the weight of the collection inside. The 3 boxes on top are Plomb also, including the 100HR box on the left.

Nice. ALOT of rare stuff in there. I see the early tees with the fixed sockets along with some early pre part number wrenches.

Now I am super curious what is the mobile:).
Don't be a tease show us some pics.

These are most what's in the drawers, mostly wrenches, separated by type. I did have them all laid in order, but I had to move, so I emptied the drawers, moved, then just put them back in.

This is most of the rest.
Bottom of the toolmobile has some of my 3/4 stuff, 1937 gear puller in wood box, 3/8 and 1/2 drive cases.
I've got other stuff packed away, catalogs, factory photos, employee newsletters, a photo from 1935 tool trade show.

You're mini ignition pliers look different than either of the pairs I have. I have one stamped on the side flat like that, but thinner, almost sheet metal thin. I have another one that is thicker handles, kind of rounded instead of sheet metal, and forged, but they're stamped on the handle edges, not the flats.
I will try and grab some more pics.
Congrats Roy! Looks like some nice stuff there.
Thanks
Great haul, Roy. Looks to me like a 1945 1/4” drive box. Congratulations.
-Don
Thanks.
Yup, Roy ***** ! What a great find. I find a chisel or 2 at every swap meet but I am in plomb territory. I can appreciate the effort it took someone to collect all those. How much of that will fill out the plombmahal ? [emoji23]

Chisels seem exceeding rare. I have never found one outside of buying a collection. I am still sorting but most of the chisels are new. A few new LA wrenches to go up on the board and a couple Pebbles that in better condition.

Maybe "uncommon" is more apt, or at least "far less common than wrenches and drive tools etc". They're not "unicorns" or "worth hundreds of dollars on eBay" or anything like that. But, like pliers and a few others things, I would agree with Roy that they show up a lot less frequently than wrenches and screwdrivers. I am only talking about the wild (fleas, estate sales, etc). I do not have a handle on eBay availability. I have found a few (less than 5) in the last 6 or 7 years. They're all in Europe now.

I posted these in #2783. I found them at a garage sale in Nevada in 2017. They all had been used hard!

That was an amazing find. I remember thinking I can't believe they were all in 1 spot.
Punches and chisels are consumables. They get used up and discarded. The survivors have been used less.
That makes perfect sense. Given that most Plombs now are at least 70 years old now, it is not hard to believe why they are not very easy to find.

I keep on chipping away at the master list, flipping other tools to buy more Plombs. I feel tunnel vision setting in or edging on the brink of insanity. Here is an O series open end wrench date 1929. Half way through the O set now with 4 left to fill out the set. This set is starting to look nice to the same era DBEs.

I am starting to condense the layout to make room for future additions. Understanding the scope of possibly filling out every cataloged Plomb wrench and how to Tetris them in to make them all fit. The white gaps helping my motivation to keep the persuit alive.IMG_20190731_201306031.jpegIMG_20190731_201450602.jpg

As promised a few weeks ago during our discussion of stamped/ non broached adjustable wrenches... I found the 2 that I have and my Utica made one as well...the middle one is a dual marked with the code of c-4-8. I have not researched what year that is?

Your dual marked example should be 4/48. If I am correct, misterbill must have a 10” PL∇MB adjustable wrench dated 3/48 AND a dual marked 6” PL∇MB/PR∇T∇ adjustable also marked 3/48. That is kind of noteworthy that they were making both single and dual marked wrenches in the same month and that he owns both examples. I hope that he can post a picture of them side by side in this thread.

Interesting that they are both from the same time with the different markings
These adjustable crescent type wrenches with 1948 date codes forged-in when they were made by the J.P. Danielson plant in 1948 and stamped with dual-marked branding at a time that may not have necessarily been the same time as they were made have come up before and I have stated my position on them before. Why would Plomb be selling an adjustable crescent type wrench or any tool for that matter marked PLVMB and an adjustable crescent type wrench or any other tool marked PLVMB/PRVTV at the same time? And why would they be doing it in April 1948?

If anyone wants to re-visit my "Plomb Lawsuit Tools Production Timeline Revisited" thread, it is linked here.

Here is an excerpt from the Lawsuit Tools Timeline I developed and posted there...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- In March 1947 Plumb sued Plomb in an L.A. Federal district court and won; Plomb had a year (or until March 1948) to stop using its name as a trademark.

- On February 2, 1948, Plomb applied for a ‘PRVTV’ TM that said it was using the TM on paper, tags, decals, etc only.

- On July 13, 1948, Plomb was awarded the ‘PRVTV’ TM that it said it was using on paper, tags, decals, etc only.

- In October 1948, Plomb started running ads consistent with their on-paper-only TM application using ‘PRVTV TVVLS MFD. BY PLMVB’ as a theme.

- On November 16, 1948, Plumb sued Plomb again for contempt, and the court ordered Plomb to comply with the previous March 1947 order, and to pay Plumb any profits it made during the year after March 1948 (the date it was supposed to have complied by).

- In December 1948, Plomb closed down to re-tool for a solution to the November 16, 1948 contempt lawsuit that was called a "temporary expedient" and estimated to cost $130,000.

- On December 14, 1948, Plomb applied for a ‘PROTO’ TM that it now said it was using on packaging and tools.

- In early January 1949, Plomb re-opened.

- On January 13, 1949, Plomb lost an appeal against Plumb (171 F2d 945), and Plomb was given until March 1950 to fully comply with the previous March 1947 court order to cease and desist using “Plomb” as a trademark.

- Throughout 1949 Plomb embarks on a massive advertising and merchandising education and conversion blitz introducing ‘Proto Tools’. While they were making and selling the dual-branded tools, they were re-tooling across their plants to remove ‘Plomb’ completely by March 1950.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My explanation remains that the dual-marked wrenches could've been made at the J.P. Danielson plant in 1948, held over in stock while Plomb was struggling with solutions to the lawsuit issues, and stamped and sold with the PLVMB/PRTVT branding in 1949.

I have yet to see a PLVMB/PRVTV adjustable crescent type wrench or any other tool with forged-in markings and forged-in 1948 date codes.

Understand that I have no stake here other than logic. If I am wrong and these wrenches were made, dual-marked, and sold by Plomb in 1948, it doesn't fit the timeline, and that would require an explanation. That's all I'm saying. That is my only interest.

I'll photo them tonight when I get home. I think we all agree that in Danielson's L.N.N forgings the rightmost N is the year. Is there a consensus yet on the meaning of the L and middle N?

Here's some pix of the 1948 dated Plomb adjustables. The 10" is M.3.8 and the 6" is P.3.8.

Your Plvmbaloy (I have a very similar March 1948) has the branding forged-in when the date code was forged-in, and that was done without a doubt when the wrench was forged. Your dual-marked wrench has the date code forged-in when the wrench was forged, but we don't know when it was stamped. Strangely, it does not have a reinforced handing hole, and it has not been broached with a box end.

I found this partial Circle-U set at the flea market this morning. Oddly, the ratchet does not have a Circle-U mark anywhere on it. That "satin" finish is cadmium. I don't want to start an argument, but I already thought the Craftsman Long C era tools were the best in Craftsman history based on the New Britain BE and (H) series alone, with a nod also to the C Series. Other than a socket or two and a short extension, these are the first Plomb-made Circle-U tools I have found as a lot, a partial set, en masse, and this is the first time I have ever held a Circle-U ratchet. And now that I have, I am doubling down on my claim. :)

Thanks. If the set included the /32nds, and went over 1", like Most Craftsman sets in the 40's, then it looks like I am missing only the typical MIA's:

1-1/8"
1-1/6"
25/32"
21/32"
19/32"
Hey Lugz,
Interesting on the ratchet. I will have to check and see if I have any unmarked circle Us. I can't say for sure but I don't know if there was a set that went over 1". I have one odd 1-1/8" socket that I posted in the past the font is different and the socket construction appears different as well.

Also most of the sockets I have have an alluring blue tint to them that I have yet to see in another socket. It makes me wonder what the metallurgy of the coating is.
