A couple of Plomb wrenches showed up at the Flea Market today.

Plomb 1218 9/16 combo with a 5 (1935) date code. Perhaps a heavy strike on a C for March?

Plomb AD910 DBE 9/16x5/8 date code 9B (Feb. 1929). Ugly owner's marks **
Nice pair. Both are pretty hard to find.

I've not seen a 5862 either. Wondering how much a 1" ratchet or hinge handle with an 18" extension and 2 1/2" or so socket would weigh together?
EDIT: I'm going to guess around 20 lbs all together with the ratchet based on dead weights shown in catalog 18A for the ratchet (5848 11 1/2 lbs plus drive plug), 18" extension (5863 4 3/4 lbs) plus the socket weight which isn't shown. FYI the hinge handle 5868 is 9 1/4 lbs.

Dang that is pretty heavy. Haven't seen a 1" hinge handle yet. I think I am up to 6 1" Plomb pieces now.
I remember a few years back I picked up a snap on 1-1/2" drive socket set including 2 torque mutipliers, 1 extension, and 7 sockets. They were all packed into a Kennedy box. I swear that box weighed well north of 100lbs. I was thinking who the hell is lugging this thing around. It should have wheels.

I do sometimes. I have been jonesing on pliers lately. Still waiting for the lone Pebble wrench to finish out the grandslam.
Good to see your back in the mix.

great to be back at it! Being so busy ***** some times!

Started my Plomb collection backwards, finding the ToolMobile first and then picking up a nice beginning assortment of hand tools. Ignore the Proto ratchet 'hiding' in the middle of the Plombs :) . Although I'm only half way thru this thread (wow!), I've seen mention of copper like coating which looks to be the case in the 1051 box wrench that came in the deal.

Rick

Oh thats a nice Kopr-Klad it belongs with the others here at my pace !! nice find!

RT, I think that may be a box label scraper, from back when wood crates were used and re-used..

I'm betting you are right! Id never of thought of that, thanks Outlaw!

Agreed. At this point, my goal is to not own anything that I need to tote a 1" or larger drive tool around to fix!

Jacsonville all "city" swap meet (I think we have less than 2k residents...). 2x 3/4 combo proto wrenches (1x LA 1x Challenger), Proto 5/8 combo & Plomb 1/2 x 9/16 box combo & 3/4 & 11/16 open box combo. Plus mystery tool.

by the way, what's the "F" stand for? Seems like a weird tool marking as it's 5 digit vs. the typical 4.
I think it's a contract designation for non power plant ( which would probably just use the standard Wright Aeronautical# system) tools for the Boeing B-17.

I found these at the Tahoe flea this morning. Any suggestions on removing the plastic handles without trashing them? I already tried really hot water with no success.

Nice finds Don. I am not sure on the grips. Are they pebble, designed, or smooth handle grips on them pliers? I assume the grips are somewhat transparent.

Don, until you break the vacuum seal the grips have on the handles, I don't think they are going anywhere. Maybe you can get them started by twisting on them? Once broke loose you still need to be pushing them off, not pulling, as just like rubber hose they get tighter by pulling on them...

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll give those a try. The grips are plastic and look like grips I’ve seen on several Klein tools. I wasn’t able to see through them well enough to see if the handles have any patterns. If I knew for sure that the handles were just smooth, I might leave the covers in place since they are in perfect condition.

I can't believe my luck today! I found not one, but TWO Plomb WF8-S ratchets from the same vendor. Every tool he had seemed to be 'eBay priced', but he must have priced these based on the regular WF8 ratchets! WIN!:pimpflash

A shame about the holes in the handles, but beggars can't be choosers...

Those are an amazing find! Congratulations. The holes will allow you to hang them from your pegboard. You should look at them as a plus!:bounce:

Nicely done. I snagged one off of eBay last year with same pricing as the standard WF8.

Don, you need to slide a thin needle-like object under the plastic coating and inject something like Pledge to both break the vacuum seal and give it something to slide on. This is how I loosen old bicycle grips that I want to save.

Here are a couple of pebbles that came out of the evaporust today and some water pump pliers that arrived from an eBay seller. I’ll try the needle under the handle covers tomorrow.

I have always liked the style of the Plomb 5 band sockets. Snagging this little gem off of the bay allowed for quite additions to Plomb wall including a 1930 DDX22. The top row is the ones I needed. The bottom are dupes. If you are looking for any of the bottom row to fill out a set let me know. The last 4 pics are the bottom row.

I suspect so. A little chrome on the 1/4 set, but none on the 1/2 and 3/8. Still hunting for a couple of sockets for the 1/4 set.

That is a nice looking set. All appear to be Cad plated?

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrench 3061

I read somewhere that Plomb stopped using cadmium plating because of the war restrictions and never went back to using it after the war. Is that true or false?

Brian,
Cad plating was very popular on wartime tools as an allowed alternative to the metal restrictions on Chrome plating. Check out the NAF socket on the right. They went back to chrome plating tools postwar.

Nice stuff, Otg. Here is a link to that partial Circle-U set I found back in August. Also cad. In terms of finish intactness, it is the finest set of cadmium-plated tools I have from any mfgr.

They went back to chrome plating tools postwar.
For the most part, that's true. I've seen a few Proto LA pieces that were cad-plated. I have this adaptor, for example. I don't know if that means it was a government contract piece, a civilian contract piece (some of the "[S.R.]" are cad, for example), or an economy line piece. Some mfgrs that were using cad before the war in their economy lines went back to it for that purpose. I'm not suggesting it was a standard practice.

^ I also have some pebble combos that have a dully grey coating that is either cad plating or paint that seems to be factory-applied and flakes off easily. It does not look like chrome.

It's interesting . They coated all this stuff with what turns out to be a toxic coating. I usually handle it with a rag or something.

When you keep in mind that cadmium wasn't banned as a very minor ingredient in plastics and other composites until the 1990's, its use before, during and after WWII as a rust-proofing substance doesn't seem all that shocking.

They were unaware it would seem. Lots of materials that work great seem to be toxic . Asbestos is an example. Lead in gas and paint.

Digging through the darkest recesses of the shop tonight looking for a small screwdriver, my hunt led to me digging through my Grandfather's toolbox (he has been gone for nearly 25 years, and passed when he was well into his late 90's).
No luck looking for the screwdriver, but I did find this:

I guess I am lucky. When I was in High School, I restored a Model A Ford. One of the processes was to wire brush the rust off the old bolts, which were Cadmium plated. I wore no protective gear, except glasses. Now I am 70 years old, and have no health problems.

I wouldn't wire brush cadmium plating 40 hours a week. But brushing off a tool or two each month would not worry me. Of course, wear a mask and eye protection, and most importantly, don't eat the dust!
