Another wrench for the board. A large slugging wrench shown next to a DA8 for size. IMG_20200125_091640959.jpeg

That’s a serious chunk of steel!

My meager plomb finds from the day. A 1214, a pebble 1216, and an 1131 grind off. When I find a few plombs at an estate sale, I always feel like I must have just missed the rest of the sets. : (

Thanks. It is very heavy. Finding any Plomb is always a good day.

My package finally came from Jim and Marsha. I had been mulling over some water pump wrenches for months now and finally pulled the trigger. I am still missing 2 yet a 1-3/16" and 1-5/8". These things are very hard to find.

Also a new Pebble Wrench. It may be contract production but an 8pt SBE appears to be made from a 37XX series blank. Part number 4Y 187. Anyone have info on this wrench? The only possible application I can thing of is Ford Brakes. It does have a similar part number that Ford used on their tools but I cannot find any info on it. It appears there are officially 81 pebble wrenches out there including a 3/8" flare (dual marked) and now this one.IMG_20200125_180538010.jpegIMG_20200125_180545907.jpegIMG_20200125_180553051.jpegIMG_20200125_180557121.jpegIMG_20200125_180605028.jpegIMG_20200125_180610616.jpegIMG_20200125_180616935.jpeg

That is a Caterpillar part number format, and a early one, as well. Appropriate to the time frame, too.
I was wondering if it wasn't that but dismissed it as from what I remember they had number letter number X4. Is there any reference index for cat tools?

Not a official complete 1. Theres a antique Cat enthusiast in UK thats been working on 1 for almost 20 years i know of. I had it but lost it with a puter crash 7-8 years ago. I'll see if i can find it online.

I don't think that is a cat part number because of the space, different size of characters. Never seen a y in any vintage cat part numbers.

Old Cat part numbers didn't have a placeholder digit if the number was lower. 4Y 187 would update to 4Y0187 under the new format. I cannot say when the change was made, but it was much later than 1960.

Found this Plomb 6528 that I learned is a carburetor adjustment tool. What's a carburetor?

Here’s a new one for me. I scored this 1937 plomb Los Angeles 5251 on the bay recently. Never held one in my hand before. Pretty neat ratchet. Any idea why plomb wold have made a non-reversible ratchet at the same time as the reversible ones?

Duro did the same thing. The non reversible ratchet was less expensive.

The '36 catalog doesn't list a reversable ratchet in any size; just the XX51 series push through plug, which is what you found. I don't know when the XX49 ratchet was released, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was some crossover the first year or two.

Were they making a reversible ratchet in the early to mid 30's? I didn't think so. I thought that came later, in 1939, and then they offered them with plugs and without. So, with Cubs, it would've been only 5251 non-reversible through 1938, then a 5249 with a plug (5252) and a 5248 female, no plug. I could be wrong. I'd have to go through the cats.

EDIT: What Jock said. I was thinking and then typing and didn't see his post.

I think you guys are right. I just checked out the 1936 catalog and there’s no mention of reversible ratchets. And the oldest 5249 I’ve seen is a ‘39. So they might not have overlapped at all. I guess I caught CRS as well. Or, worse, a case of DKS...

I think 39 was first reversable with the push plug. 40 they still kept the removeable plug and 41 the removeable was taken away.

I did notice this little blurb in catalog 15A... Makes me wonder what happened. Were they late in getting it to market? Is there a 1937 or 38 catalog out there on the internet? Or maybe they are talking about the ratchet with the attached reversible drive plug.

That's a good catch, Dan. This is Page 6 from Catalog 16-B, which was dated to 1938 in the file name. I don't recall where I got it. There is no publishing date in the actual text. It looks like a first time introduction, but I suppose I can see them running that again if they did indeed introduce them later in 1936 than when Catalog 15-A was published, or in 1937. The "B" in 16-B hints at a 16-A, which could've been late 1936 or 1937. (If you're wondering why I said 1939 last night, I don't have this 1938 catalog on my home computer. I really need to consolidate, but I've been waiting for TA 2.0. :))

Came across an old 1/2" drive flex handle speeder. Appears to have cadmium coating? AA example looks like it was a chrome finish tho

I've got one in my Mustang to use as lug nut wrench, with the swivel head like you show. Mine is chrome, not cadmium. Cadmium was used as an alternative finish during WWII years when chrome plating use was restricted.

Very well could be. They carried that design into the proto empire so it would have been available during the war period.

I have been cleaning up swap meet finds. I found this 3/4 drive war finish last year and finally got around to cleaning it. I have been advised it is rare ? I have some good stuff in the box! Transitional marked pliers, pipe wrench and combo wrench, soft face hammer and big boy combo wrenches with no marks on them! I will spread everything out and take better pictures tonight!

I got a few cool pieces in the mail today... One was this nice complete 1/4” drive set. No owners marks on anything and a nice even patina. It was missing the 4714 but I had one in my stash.

The other piece is an odd one. It’s the last style of 1/4” pebble ratchets with a female drive. My guess is someone repaired the ratchet with parts from an earlier model, but who knows. Either way, I had to add it to the midget family.

Not to down play at all as war finish is rare in it's own since but it seems to be the most common at least for me in the 3/4" drive sockets. I bought a 3/4" mixed set with about 6 or 7 war finish 5 bands. I have about 50ish 5 bands but only those 5 or 6 are war finish. They are more rare than LA or non war finish. Very nice goody box. Would love to see them sprawled out.
