Hi. yeah, that looks like it. Square corners, 2 drawers on top then an an open compartment with the drop down door and the another drawer below that. I know without a picture this is worthless...one of you commented a while ago about a red top chest I had in the backgorund of one of my pics...the toolmobile might have been partially in that shot .

I was hoping you were at the relatives house where you keep some of your things but oh well[emoji23] maybe next time you are there you could take a picture? I just don’t know anyone who has an early tool mobile like that?!

Not truly plomb news but these were close enough I thought I would share

I picked up these 2 Proto la catalogs off eBay for less than $11 shipped [emoji23][emoji41] I put in a last minute bid online and thought for sure I would be out bid but no... shipping cost double the cost of the items . 1951 and 1953 and the 1951 even has the price sheet insert! I was pretty excited about it. I only have a 1962 Proto catalog but it is the bigger size. Maybe these where a jobber size for mechanics, not for counter men?

Not sure what's going on with that chick's hair? Even if they didn't have conditioner back then the artist could have at least done her a solid.

True, there was much more artistic interpretation then[emoji23] it looks like a bad beehive hair cut or something but I think they were trying to give the impression she was flying forward? I don’t know why they got away from their wartime industry logo with the plane and the train but whatever

Even if I went over there it's turned drawers against the wall and has a ton of **** in front of it.
Might be able to find an archived pic, otherwise it'll be awhile.
BTW, I bought it years ago at a Washington State Dept of Highways / Transportation auction for $50.00

Want to double your money [emoji23][emoji16] ?? Just messing with you. How long ago was that auction if they still had a vintage tool mobile in use?

I’ve been adding to my 4700 R 1/4” drive master set and am down to only missing three pieces. I’m looking for the 4742 (9/16” Spanner), the 4746 (Screwdriver) and the 4747 (Screwdriver) if anyone should happen to have any spares. Here is an updated photo.

That set looks great! I don’t think I have any of the spares you are looking for but I will check

Thanks, Smoke. They may be kind of obscure items but there are some serious Plomb collectors on this site so I remain hopeful that I will complete the set.

well that didn't come out worth a ----. Anyway, did anyone else notice this wrench holding down the corner of the map in 'There Will be Blood' ? I think this scene is supposed to be around 1911.

so cleaning out a relatives garage where I've been dumping tools for years I came across this old Plomb male socket set ( among other things) I had completely forgot about.

Let me know if I need to come over with my truck and “help” you with all that “junk” you are cleaning out [emoji16][emoji23]

Hi yeah, I live on 31st just South of Johnson Creek Blvd. If I'm not there just let yourself in and take whatever you want.

I'm going to take a wild *** guess that it's Brian's house.

I see what you did there[emoji23] I will message Brian to let him know I am on my way [emoji23]

So my guess was correct! And I'm not even a member of the PNW crew.

First off, I don't need to store anything with a family member, friend, or anyplace else to forget I bought it - I do that just fine right here in my own home. In fact, due to the cancellation/closure of every flea market and swap meet along the I-5 corridor in the PNW (Seattle to Eugene), I've resorted to picking my own shop on the weekends to keep myself sane!

Secondly, X, Smoke, and BMW have found so many unusual, uncommon, and unknown (to me) items here that I would likely never know if something went missing.

And since Plomb tools are secondary to me, and security is lax, who's to say what you might find?!? Not Plomb male sockets, anyways. I don't think I've ever seen any in person, let alone owned any.

Nice items, X. If you're still in town tomorrow, call me so I can come harass you.

I blew up the photo but it's badly pixelated. I'm guessing it's a Plomb/Proto slugging wrench? It's not quite as egregious an anachronism as the paper coffee cup on the table in Season 8 of Game of Thrones but to a tool geek, that's pretty close.

It must have been a slow weekend for you if you're counting the sides of a wrench on an artist's depiction. Have you checked under any more drinking fountains?

I was always of the mind that any of the "double letter date codes" were wartime, but this 1214 wrench is not only in damn good condition but it looks to be chromed.

Did I miss something?

Lots of Plomb tools with the “C” suffix are chrome plated. I have quite a few examples. Only a few will fit in this post. I have many more. I don’t really want to get into the wartime dating discussion again. It’s a waste of time, as far as I’m concerned.

Thanks to SSDave for answering a question about tool board edges , I was able to get some more tool boards cut out today. I even chamfered the edges like the original and will paint them green before putting the screws into them. I am making the boards 2’ wide and 4’ tall... the originals are 2’x2’ but I wanted them to be taller. I am making 2 Proto LA boards and 4 plomb boards. I need to make some plomb boards for hammers, pliers, adjustable wrenches, pipe wrenches and other misc items ! I am also in the process of getting some more stickers made as well! I haven’t had any since I made my tool boards back in 2017

Examples of the Letter-Letter tools do show up chrome-plated, as Don alluded to. How many, proportionally, in ratio to the number of examples that are natural steel, is debatable. There is a respectful disagreement about them. Some collectors think they disprove or cast serious doubt on the wartime dating conclusion. Others, including me, can't comprehend that.

I'll explain why not and you can make up your own mind.

Here is a summary of the Letter (Month)-Letter (Year) dating, as worked out, empirically, by Twertsy on Tool Archives, based on over a hundred examples:

LA: December 1941
AB, BB, CB, etc - LB: January 1942 - December 1942
AC, BC, CC, etc - LC:- January 1943 - December 1943
AD, BD, CD, etc - LD: January 1944 - December 1944
AE: January 1945

To fully grasp the significance, it has to be emphasized that what is not shown is just as important as what is shown. Note that no Plomb tools with Letter-Letter codes have been found (or at least have not been reported) with a first Letter after L (the 12th letter in the alphabet), or with a second letter after E.

Therefore, regardless of when the date-code system is placed on a calendar, it seems nearly undisputable that the first letter signifies month, that the second letter signifies year, and that the date code system was in effect for five (5) years.

Based on their physical characteristics (shape, construction, broaching, marking, etc), could the 5-year production period Letter-Letter tools be from an earlier era?

No. They can't be from 1927 through 1938. They might be from 1939, 1940 and 1941 when they switched to a "USA" marking, but as we know, examples of those sockets exhibit the system that Plomb was using - a Number (Year)-Letter (Unknown) code - since 1927. Note that the Number-Letter system ended in 1941.

Based on their physical characteristics (shape, construction, broaching, marking, etc), could the Letter-Letter sockets be from a later era?

Yes, they are the same style that Plomb used throughout the 40's right up to the lawsuit.

But does it make sense that the 5-year Letter-Letter system connotes 1945 to 1949? Or that they stopped date coding during the war and picked it up again when the war ended? Or that they used a different date code system after the first one, and then dropped date coding altogether after the war? Or that an overwhelmingly large portion of the Letter-Letter code tools are plain steel? Why would that many tools be plain steel in the late 40's?

That's why I don't comprehend how they can possibly bust the wartime Letter-Letter system. That conclusion can't be tossed out in a vacuum. That conclusion requires an explanation that, in my opinion, is much harder to make than looking at the plated examples of L-L tools as so far unexplained anomalies.

Making some progress on my loose reproduction tool boards tonight. I say loose because I will be using my same screws/ vacuum hose system to hang tools on, not the actual prongs found on the boards. I took my only original Proto la tool board to Home Depot tonight and asked them to match the green on the edges. I have the first coat of green on and will put on another before I put on the clear satin spar varnish on the faces of them.

Looking good. Can't wait to see the result. What are using for peg material?
I ended up using I think 1/16" round stock cut to length and pre drilling the hole undersized. Worked well.

I am using 12 or 14 size screws with vacuum hose aroun the shank to protect the tools. I like your round stock idea better but I don’t want someone to run unto these boards or snag clothes on them. They will be running the whole length of one side of my garage. Plus with the screws I can remove them at a later date or add longer screws. Here is a picture of them on the old boards I had made a while back. They are still in use

Trust me, it was a struggle for me to steer clear of the round stock. I wanted to make them as authentic as possible but needed to error on the side of use and safety since they run from floor to ceiling in my garage. If they were in a different spot like yours, I probably would have used the bar stock.

Speaking of struggling with decisions... these are coming out quite nicely and will probably make me want to replace the other ones I made a few years back with something more authentic so I feel like more board making is in my future next year[emoji15][emoji849] thanks a lot ocd [emoji23]
