But seriously, I would kill for that much space, as between the shop (11x13) and the annex (tiny) I am always out of room.
Turns out I overshot by quite a bit in that guesstimate. It's more like 18' x 12'. And an odd shaped-space (polygon) with two of the corners squared off a 45* angles and a huge chimney for one of the fireplaces going cattycorners in the third corner. You'll see eventually When I'm finished, I will start that thread you and I and a few others have been talking about. Unless you get there first. :)

I got my adjustable/ pipe wrench board done! It is 2’ x4’ so you can see how big it is with the modern impact driver sitting on the ground! The adjustable portion runs from 6” to 20” and the pipe wrenches run from 6” to 24”. That is the big pipe wrench pictured! It is dual marked as well. I had to cut an outlet port in this so as to not block the outlet but the others will be fine with no hole needed! Some of the holes in the small wrenches had such small holes I had to use nails for hangers . I need a 4 6,8 ,16,20 adjustable wrenches and need a 6, 10,14 ,18 pipe wrenches if someone has some?

Yeah, I keep getting distracted from finishing my shop project- general cleanup and ceiling raising. But, I have approx 1/3 of the basement, half of which is the 11x13 room, and the other half would be the same size, except the furnace is right in the middle. Smokeshow and Rileysan have been in it, and the limiting factor for them is the ceiling was 6'. Not too bad for me, but a bit claustrophobic.

Once that is done, I will get right on pictures of it all!

You guys with the collections and small shop spaces are making me feel bad. I'm going through a huge amount of purging and downsizing, as I feel smothered by the stuff I have. But, I know I have much, much smaller quantity than your collections.

However, I have an 11x10 finished basement shop, another 10x10 finished room in the basement, a corridor in the basement with shelves that I keep hardware and fasteners on, an 18 x 36 fully finished and heated/conditioned shop, an 18 x 14' finished storage area, and a 36 x 30' finished garage. In those spaces, I have three 55" x 30" toolboxes, four 26 to 42" toolboxes, 50 feet of workbench space with 7 mounted vises, and about 30 feet of commercial, rivet lock warehouse shelving. The workbenches mostly have finished drawer space under them.

My capacity to deal with "stuff" is just too low, I guess. I have the space I could collect a lot more, if I had the capacity to process and care for it.

I think my focus is more on having the space and tooling to do work, and less focus on collecting objects, except as needed to support the work I want to do. I've never been a good collector, although I've accumulated a lot of junk at times.

From the same junk store where I found Plomb 1455 auto body dolly last Friday I went back today and found a Plomb 1424 auto body hammer. Head and both faces in nice shape and what may be the original handle. Couldn't leave it behind for the $9 price tag.

You are cleaning up at that place! Is there a whole set in there?

There were several more dollies there a couple of weeks ago but they weren't priced and like an idiot I didn't take them up to the counter (this is a multi-dealer junk shop) and get prices on them. So I think at least two or three of the dollies got away and I ended up with the remaining two. Don't think any of the body hammers got away, though. There was also an auto-body file holder (but not a Plomb, Fairmount, I think) but I didn't have much use for that.

Finding Plomb tools "in the wild" in this part of the country (Nebraska) is a challenging task. They are out there, but seem to be few and far between. Far different from the folks on Calfornia coast and Pacific Northwest who seem be almost tripping over Plomb when they venture out the door. Nebraska had wartime industries, but it was centered primarily on munitions manufacturing and food production. Of course there was the big Glenn L. Martin bomber plant at Bellvue. My great aunt was a front spar riviter there on B-29s and was working on the line when the B-29 Serial No. 44-86292 (later named the "Enola Gay") came through along with several other B-29s that received the "Operation Silverplate" modifications. But to get back to Plomb, there should have been plenty of auto body shops around here in the 1930s and 1940s, just not a lot of the "heavy industry" plants that seem to be more condusive to an abundance of Plomb tools. Plomb tools just seem to be scarce around here for whatever reason.

Well good job finding those. Roy is in Sioux falls and has collected a ridiculous amount of plomb, so it can be done! I am from pierre sd, so we saw like no plomb there. A little bit in rapid city because of the airforce base.

I used to be in Spearfish, picked up a fair amount of Plomb there. Not as much as in the NW, but still substantial amount. Proto was hard to find there, compared to here. It's everywhere here, as most automotive stores carried it up into the 1990's.

I think it would be reallyintersting and informative if folks in different parts of the country could post to this thread with their observations about the relative availability (or scarcity) of Plomb tools in their area. Would be really interesting to see if the prevalance of Plomb correlates with areas that had high concentrations of industry.

I pulled some tools out of the Evaporust that I found at a garage sale yesterday. Among them was this center punch from 1933.

The correlation I have seen is a concentration of old people.

Spearfish is/was a retirement community, where people from all around the midwest ended up. They visited the Black Hills, liked it, and when they sold their farms/businesses and retired, moved there to get out of the wind/cold/flat of the prairies to the sheltered hills. It was at those peoples sales that I got Plomb stuff.

Here, I find Plomb at estate sales mostly, of business owners that retired and brought their stuff home to store in their garages/shops. I can go to estate and yard sales for weeks and see no Plomb, and then buy a box or assortment at an estate sale, generally hoarder type filled garage or outbuilding, full of greasy dirt and cobwebs and junk, and there's a half dozen or more Plomb mixed in.

Neither of these areas had industrialization, and the common denominator seems to be 80+ years of age, or dead previous owners.

Good observations. I hate losing members of the WWII generation, but their passing has put more Plomb tools on the market than at any time in recent decades. So I suppose this is as good a time to be buying it up as any.

I’ve sometimes been disappointed when my eBay orders arrive but this evening I opened the box and had a couple of pleasant surprises. Here is a screenshot of the partial 1/4” drive set that I ordered. I figured that the ratchet had to be a 4751 because it was in the box where the short extension usually is. I was hoping that when it arrived it wouldn’t be broken like they so often are. When I took a close look I realized that it looked almost brand new and worked perfectly. The other surprise was that the 7/32” socket was dual marked which I hadn’t run across in 1/4” drive sockets. I guess I’ll be giving that seller positive feedback!

Wow dual marked 1/4" drive socket. I don't think I have ever seen one of those.

I haven’t either. I was beginning to wonder if perhaps those were not made during that “time” like maybe they were trying to clear out their new old stock real quick

The almost new ratchet is in amazing condition, but that socket is definitely a surprising bonus! You scored big time.

Thanks. I did a couple of comparison shots with my black oxide ratchet and added the dual marked socket to my few other dual marked tools.

That looks real nice Don. And just to clear so space, you can throw the old one in the next box you are sending up my way.

'Cause I am nice like that!

I’m afraid that the box went out yesterday. They hardly take up any space anyway. Maybe next time.:D
I got tired of looking at this rusty box that holds my spare 1/4” drive tools so I finally decided to do something about it.

Ok guys, I am starting to lay out my transitional combo wrench board... the pictured wrenches are mostly Proto la because they are the same length since they are longer than the earlier pebble wrenches or smooth panels. I need quite a ton of transitional wrenches. I have a 13/16(1226) and a 1(1232) wrench. I need every other wrench which is 19 others [emoji15] do you guys have any extras? I would be interested in buying or trading. Let me know!

That’s bold building a board for transitional wrenches. It would drive me nuts trying to find that many dual marks. You are a brave man.
