Thanks guys for letting me know that Proto's parts for my old Plvmb long handled ratchet are available.

Smoke: good to know that my ratchet is a 1/2 inch (it did look smaller, but I do have a bunch of washers that might have come off a battleship next to it).

BMW: thanks and only reason I asked is because one of the screws has been replaced at some time with one that is about 1/4 inch too long so it sticks out. once I clean it up i'll post up a few pics, but in the middle of a fence and new deck project now that our PNW rain has stopped for a few months.

Mr. X: I've never seen a tool holder like that with Plvmb's name on it and nice to know you now have 2. great find and one thing I know for certain is you CAN'T **** YOURSELF.

great score though.
What's the thread pitch, head style, and length of the screw you need? I may have something suitable in the stash.

Tym: sorry the rusty batch of tools I found ended up in a box and is in storage at the minute so not close to measure. i'm also in the process of setting up a grinder/buffer station on top of this old military cabinet and I need to grab another grinder i've stored in my 88 year old parent's basement (setting up a woodshop there so I can keep an eye on them and have something to do while i'm there).

thanks for the offer and when I get things ready to DERUST more than a few things I'll know more.

have all of you seen the RUST REMOVAL THREAD and seen what a 3M RADIAL on a bench grinder can do especially after an evaporust soak? take a look!!

No worries. Just shoot me a PM when the time comes and I'll check what I have. I bought some oddball sizes to replace stripped cover plate screws on some of my ratchets.

I was pretty stoked to find this in a box of junk tools someone gave me yesterday. I had a 4738 in my big midget set, but it was all ground down. This one is pretty clean.

So just scored this tool caddy from a farm auction. It was full of random sockets and ratchets including a few decent LA sockets and a breaker that cleaned up well. Significantly it had both 5497 1/2" & 5297 3/8" Plomb socket rails attached. The second pic is the one I already had which is slightly different as it has the Plomb embossing on the floor of the tray as well as the sides. whereas the latest one has it only on both sides. Last pic is better shot of rails detached. winning bid was $27.50 if anyone is trying to determine degree of suckage.

Mad suckage awarded :rocker: Yours doesnt look like it was run over by a backhoe like mine looked when I found mine. Plus yours comes with the cool and uncommon socket rail! Nice pull. I saw some cool spy shots from Gary Powers during the acquisition mission and the socket rails looked like they were a part of the tray. Yes, saying you **** would be an understatement :rocker:. Are both of your trays the same height ? Mine is 6.75 tall from bottom to tallest point on the triangle.

Gary powers reference?, was not expecting one of those today:wtf:... man, bet that flies over the head of your peers. Anyway, yeah, 6 3/4 on both. I have a pic of one of those type of rails with the Plomb sticker still on it if you ever come across one and need ID confirmation.

True that, most dont know who that guy was in this day and age :) I have never found one of those rails in the wild but sure as heck would love to. Can you post a picture of your rail with the sticker now? I am sure everyone would love to see it ??:rocker:

Question for you all: Have you ever run into a Plomb 5295 box (3/8 drive) without the Plomb Tool Co stamp/embossing in the lid? I've got a line on a box that dimensionally and internally looks identical, but without the lid stamp to which I am accustomed.

Thoughts?

And thank you in advance.

Some of them had the logo and part number painted on with no embossing. Later models I believe.

I have what I believe is a late Plomb box that is filled with WF 3/8 drive stuff. I think it may be a post-War kit sold outside of normal distribution. The latch is distinctive.

The box I'm looking at has square corners, latch, carry-handle, and the internal dividers that I would normally expect to see in a pre-war box only without the embossing on the lid. It won't be til the end of next week that I will (hopefully) be able to lay hands on it again, but I'll grab pictures if he still has it... Heck, for the $7 he's asking, I'll pick it up regardless if it's still there.

Thanks, Gents.

This old THORSEN box has latches that appear to be similar to the one on that PLOMB box.

OTG, that is an amazing box!

On a related note, I wonder how difficult it would be to curate a collection of the Plomb/Plvmb/Proto box logos for those of us that are restoring some of these wonderful pieces of history. I've seen the Plvmb blacksmith logos available on the "bay" but it would be nice to have all of them in electronic form in a centrally available location... maybe I'm just dreaming here.

At any rate, thank you again for sharing the pictures of that box.

V/r,
John

If anyone has any of the other Plomb/Plomb/Proto logos of yesteryear, feel free to toss them up as well. If I can produce something worthwhile (doubtful, but worth a shot), I’ll post the images in this thread.

John

Yes, I am quite aware of your transitional box....I was the other bidder who accidently ran you up on the auction because I didn't know it was you :) I am always keeping an eye out for those totes but they dont surface often... Mr.X has 2 ( has possibly had and sold another?) and I have one... so that's about 3 known here on GJ and you know there is some top shelf stuff on here. I don't go over to the other site so I don't know if there is anyone on there who has one?

Just as a reminder, those so-called "Transitional" toolboxes with dual-marked stickers might could be as early as mid- to late-1948. They would not have dual-marked tools in them yet, but Plomb was granted the PRVTV TM in July 1948 and it was explicitly registered for packaging, decals stickers, etc. They started the PRVTV BY PLVMB ad campaign in October 1948 expressly thinking that plastering everything external with the new PRVTV name would assuage Fayette R. Plumb nd they wouldn't have to change dies. It did not work. They were sued, again, in December 1948, and two weeks later, they applied for a different PRVTV TM, this time saying it would be used on tools, too. Their last ditch (and it has to be said, stubborn) plan to keep the PLVMB name on tools, with the dual-marked initiative, was launched in January 1949, and they were promptly sued, and lost, for the last time. So, tools, almost certainly 1949 only. Stickers and other paper versions of the dual TM could be mid to late 1948.

Such a good write up Lugz! I know you took a deep dive into the timeline on your other thread that covers this in much more detail. Thanks for helping the collecting community out with many hours of research!

Speaking of Transitional tools...check out this add from during that time period! You can see the PRVTV by PLVMB logos on the tool boards! Has anyone ever seen a transitional tool board ? I have a feeling PLVMB sent the dealers stickers to put over the PLVMB logo as opposed to just issuing new boards... ***Also , look at the date at the bottom of the page, December 1948** I need some of these boards for my dual marked/transitional marked wrenches!
