Just finished going through my lot and found this wrench too. Still don't know much about the ratchet and socket before and this. Trying to figure out if I should descale everything (non-damaging rust removal technique that doesn't affect patina but removes penetrating rust and prevents further deterioration) and put it all up or get rid of it. Already have 2 full boxes plus a desk and now a carry box full of my collections so I'm running out of room.

Nope! Don't have room for much more. I'll buy stuff if it's cheap and I know somebody that'll want it but as is I need to slim down my collections. Already setting up to donate a bunch of stuff to a museum, mainly big stuff at the moment, to clear up some space.

If you are worried about damaging that made for one year only collectible, I have a Nicholson version that I would be happy to trade for it.

Sorry hoss I love this tool. The writing is so awesome! It looks space aged and vintage at the same time. All my coworkers try to but it but I love it too much! 😎

This is a copy of my post on the Garage Sale thread in case any of you missed it. Mostly Plomb, but a little P&C.

Last Fall, I attended an estate sale of a hoarder who frequented garage sales, brought home the stuff, and just packed it randomly in his garage. After he died, his family was stuck with cleaning out the house. They had not sorted through the tools yet, so I told them I was interested in Plomb and P&C tools. The son promised me they would separate out the tools I was interested in.

Last night I noticed they were having another sale, so I showed up a half hour early. The son brought out a box of Plomb and P&C tools, and we settled on a price. The first photo is the wrenches.

5428 7/8
5430 15/16
5432 1 (3)
5436 1-1/8
5438 1-3/16

There is a matched set from 7/16 to 1-3/16, less the 1-1/16 that was obviously made at the same time. All markings and finish are the same.

I think the #238 pliers are interesting. They were made before the "Name Knurl" era, and the "rope" knurls are both interesting and beautiful. Probably made in the late '30's.

The one shorty P&C DBE is interesting. No part number.'

The body hammer is not marked LA or USA.

They may yet find more stuff in this mess, so there may be a follow-up in a few months!

A friend came by today and we were able to complete some trades today. I helped to fuel his craftsman addiction and he enabled my plomb/ Proto empire habit 😎.
Big plomb puller in box. Box is kinda rough but it’s not rusty. I need to find a good forcing screw for it but other than that it’s all there and not chewed up. Also got a bunch of spare feet for my war time puller board.

Also scored this old part number puller JC5-It’s old enough the forcing screw isn’t marked but all the parts are dated 9b. Super excited to have this one!

Interesting observation. I don't have one to compare. When you get a chance to verify, please do. If so, it would demonstrate that they were either being efficient (no new engineering, same source, etc), committed to their design goals for close quarter work, or both. There's nothing wrong with bucking the norm and standard, per se. But it did disqualify their close quarter screwdriver from federal acquisition. And that seems to bear out empirically. It's not the only GMTK tool they didn't provide, but I didn't recognize why with this one until now.

As cute as the story!
They are exactly the same size.

Looks like you are missing the other bolt hole arm for the one in the box. I have the Made in USA marked 4011 and the pebble version with all arms, but no box. The forcing screw is 4012

In order to get a wartime vintage 3221 ignition wrench for my Plomb based GMTK, I picked up this wrench lot from an eBay seller. No wonder I end up with so many extras in my Plomb toolbox, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.😉

I just found a Plomb puller - in the bottom drawer of my toolbox, where it has been for years. I didn’t know it was Plomb until just now.

Ended up cleaning these up, posted #12361 #12346, and they'll stay now that I have the room. Don't know much about them, think the socket might be cadmium plated and the ratchet is dated JC but I couldn't find any confirmed date code list. One said Sept of 43.

Also ratchet appeared to have original grease. They say original is better right?

Was a process to degrease because the grease was hardened inside just like a 1930 Chevy transmission that's sat since it was pulled in 1948 (found one plus transfer case in a third story apartment in the little storage area along the sides of the bottom of the roof, walls were put up in 48 so a bit of speculation, a few years ago and ended up taking it home with a bit of effort.)

No original grease for my plomb ratchets😂. I use superlube in all of them and they sound fantastic and feel very smooth.

I just used 3 in 1. Use it on everything else for rust prevention on the bodies and on fine tooth internals but it seems to do well in the plomb. Internals didn't have much wear after I broke all the grease cake off so it's pretty smooth. Also like the shallow head but would rather get a newer proto, I think it's still the same design sold, and not risk damaging this one.

Sign you had a great swap meet. You have to add more witches brew (wd40) to your soaking container (12x12). This is just the small wrenches, sockets, etc that would fit. Big boys not pictured 😃

Is the wd40 just for cleaning dirt and stuff off or does it work for removing rust?

It’s just the final part of a process- it gets into hard to reach areas and may clean some surface grease/rust off but I clean the tools as best as possible by hand first

- my process is as follows

- bench grinder
- use small wire brush in drill press or drill to clean small openings
- wipe down with degreaser
- soak in wd40
- wipe down and inventory or sort duplicates to trade box

Thought I’d share my Sunday afternoon Plomb wrench bottle opener project. I’ve got about 47 projects that are more pressing right now, but this is what I worked on today. Didn’t think to snap any before pics, but this scrap of wrench I got when I bought a toolbox full of tools started so rusty you couldn’t see the writing on the wrench. Used a surgical cable for the hanger. I thought the steel would be difficult to saw through, but a hacksaw made pretty quick work 3F5BD5BE-BF4C-4B7C-9F15-1294539B5DC2.jpegFFAA9802-4036-47C6-AD32-C47B83E34514.jpeg

Not sure if you are aware of this but that is a rare jf-22 contract wrench.

Bought a lot of tools not too long ago and there were about 15 wrenches with the box end cut like that. Guy must've had a drinking problem.

Most of the other wrenches had grind marks and bends so it's not too out there.

Found these beauties in a snap-on ferret set case at my cabin. Thought I'd post em here for the die hards to drool over. I know nothing about plomb. The ratchet is 3/8 drive and the sockets are all plumb 3/8 to 3/4. The 2 of the extentions are sk and the speed wrench the long extension and the universal joint are grey tool. Turns out my grandfather inlaw liked north american made tools.

Found this beauty recently. Roughly finished compared to newer stuff. Very similar to the Plomb KDB Dodge Brake Wrench, only on this wrench both sides are 7/8". Any idea what it was for?

7.6" OAL and very thin, like the Dodge brake wrench.

Never mind. I just figured it out. It's a Studebaker brake wrench. This is from Catalog #8, 1928:

Super stoked to add this post-war 9990 to the collection. As I've been completing my pebble veteran set, space has increasingly been a problem. What was regulated to 1-large drawer in my HF 44" box is overflowing. I've been looking for a period 9990 online for a bit, but they don't come up regularly (at all).

In the end, a forum member here reached out to me over Facebook and offered to sell his 9990. It was his first Plomb (the first of many) and I'm happy to call it mine. We were both worried about shipping it from California to Texas, but it arrived today in great shape. Kudos to the UPS employees that packed it up in Cali, it was the best packaging of any item I've ever received...ever.

Oh boy, that’s a good one! Looks to be in good shape given it’s age and it’s not spray bombed which is difficult to find. Are the decals original?

I found these Plomb items at today’s estate sale. Not only was the 1/4” drive ratchet assembled backwards, the selector needs replacing as do the replacement ball point pen springs. The combo wrench is cool and I’ll pass along the 9/32” drive WF sockets.
