Like the place.
Like the rides.
You're obviously a talented guy with some toys we can all appreciate.
But you need to lighten up a bit there, Francis.
Realize that most folks around here actually have a positive intent, despite what you may or may not read into their responses.

Good luck with your project. Welcome to the board.

Other than the welcome to the board, I already saw his join date, I'd say that's about right.

Enjoy and good luck with your project.

seriously? I respond to a "know it all" who didn't with sarcasm and a reply that wanted to kill snakes for no reason.

maybe you should teach the membership about sarcasm..

this is sarcasm...

And tell me what is wrong with this reply...

It merely states the facts. Killing snakes for no reason is ignorant. Especially when they perform a positive function and are neither dangerous or poisonous.

I get chastised for this? The other members can also choose to not comment or follow the thread. Other than those two the thread is pretty damn positive, maybe you should talk to the two who sent the thread in that direction about what they posted?

Let's take a step back to my reply that stated there was an unfortunate amount of caustic banter in this thread. Can you please identify the line of text in which I stated that you were the source of all the problems in here?

I didn't name you, or anyone. I made a factual statement about the unfortunate way people in here are communicating with each other. And, it continues.

Then be a moderator and delete those posts... clean up the thread.
I cleaned up my posts.

I cleaned up my posts.

As a mod, I don't always just delete stuff. If people don't know what the problem is, it won't go away. Now that you know what the problem is, we can move forward.

Now, be a good citizen of the board.

So I was out of town last week for work, but we have taken about half the roof off at this point...

This is the last section of roof, should be off this afternoon...

Not only is there the wood from the roof, but a ton of wood that was being stored inside and around it... I believe I am going to use all the tongue and groove to side the barn, got some people coming to look at all the old hardwood and rough cut lumber.

Just saw this thread...looking good. It is a shame you had to completely dismantle the barn before you had to rebuild it! Love the ol truck with the nailhead too! I will definately have to keep a watch on this one! What did you do with all the old metal??

the roof is off... now to put a new one on,

Wow! I can't tell if it's just the camera/perspective, but THAT is gonna be FUN to try and get plumb, level and/or some semblance of "square". Maybe this would call for a more "organic" curved approach?

Keep the pics coming, it's got great bones, it'll be interesting to see some new life in them! And all that stored/old lumber ROCKS

Looks like a cool project! I've always wanted a V11 sport. Cool bikes. I saw one at a gas station in Colorado that was green and I was drawn to it. I talked with the guy. When I was looking for a bike I could not find one.

Nice place, zman. I like the way the brick goes all the way to the ground on the back of the house. You really have your work cut out for you. But the basic structure of the barn looks pretty solid. Good luck with your project.......

Yeah there are some issues with "square" and I'll be taking a more "organic approach with it. Though I am toying with going ahead and "raising the roof" so my lift will fit, that would include pouring footings for new posts, but I'm kind of at a point of being able to do it without a whole lot of added effort.

So I've been trying to get someone to pour a slab and I am replacing the poles with 6x6 that will sit on the slab. Mostly so I can raise the roof a couple feet so my lift will fit in there. But I've been stood up 3 times for quotes on the slab as well as lots of calls not returned. Getting ready to grade it, build the forms, and tamp it myself since no one wants my money...

That's part of the character of a project like this... some things won't be perfect, but it should be an excellent garage.

I look forward to your progress.

Meh. Who needs walls plumb or square anyway? :D

Well that looks different !
Must be nice to be so busy with work that you can blow someone off when they ask
for a quote on a project.
Their loss , more money in your pocket for the build !
Keep us updated zman !

Whose doing the slab? If you need anything else, give me a shout. I used to sell concrete and still have some contacts, project manager for a GC now and can make things like this happen.

Looks good!

Ended up hiring a guy that works for a friend to help me do it. He used to work for his dad doing concrete before moving to Raleigh. I rented the Mustang (Bobcat wanna be) and he already had the tamper. Already have the concrete ordered and coming Monday morning, but thanks for the offer.

Since you made such a big point about wanting to avoid all the necessary red tape to tear down and start over as compared to a re-model, I hope you decided to get all the necessary permits, as in essence, you decided to do a tear down. Even if you are making the case that it's a "remodel", (given the small amount of the building still standing,) you are now dealing with a giant "addition". Around here, even the smallest addition means permits and inspections all along the way. Doesn't your town require this too???

In my town, it's been know to happen that the building inspector has required finished, and very expensive, (and unpermitted), additions to be completely torn down. Brand new unpermited bathrooms have been completely torn out. There is some sort of "post-completion" permiting process, but that is usually reserved for folks who unwittingly buy a property that had unpermitted work...and assuming that work is fully compliant anyway.

If you're taking the risk that no one will notice...best of luck. If you reuse all that old lumber on the exterior, that could help your chances. But it still seems like a massive risk.

I am chiming in late but what are the snakes in your earlier pics? Around here only have to worry about rattlers, & I stay away from their haunts, only others that were around the house are gopher snakes & they are useful but I think my cats got them.

Hope all goes well w/ your project.

Rat snakes, they'll keep the rodents under control as the name implies, I moved them to another wood pile. I hope they stick around.

While I don't care for snakes, those are useful 'cause I hate rats & mice more. Thanks for the information.
These projects can nickle & dime you to death as I found out with a project to reconstruct a pump house behind my shop into a storage room this summer, still need to move the water tank back in & get rid of the exposed temporary PVC pipe or the cold weather coming will do it for me.

So things slowed down a whole lot, new job, closed my shop and moved everything home, and am trying to make this the best shop I can. So the slab is done and cured. I did some renderings in Sketch Up to get an idea of exactly where I was going with all of it.

Had to figure the roof pitch as well as some other dimensions. Should be back on it this week. And I've got a call into a buddy to do the electrical. I'll have to have all the framing and roof done for him to do his work. Hopefully I'll have some more progress pics this week.

Why not a second garage door on the right side? Will that side be used only for bikes?

Welding table, frame table, blasting cabinet, lathe, mill, and some other equipment. And maybe a couple bikes. If I do another carriage door it'll be straight through to the back.
