looking to build a 30x32x14h pole garage. Had two separate contractors out for quotes. They want to to post in the ground and have them sticking out a foot. Box them in with 2x10's and make a wooden footer. Next the would frame atop of the 2x10 and do stick built hybrid. Trusses 2ft on center.

What is this called and is it legit? After the first guy I blew it off as a joke thinking the load on the 2x10 would sag after a while. but to get another guy im questing myself. Cant find any info on the net, but i'm not sure what to type to search.
Thanks

It seems possible, but usual limitations of pole barns.

Along the lines of simplicity, I would sooner do a trench footing and pour a monolithic slab. Then stick build.

I get that the wooden posts in the ground saves interacting and coordinating with vertical formwork and concrete contractors except for the flatwork/floor.

It may be faster and cheaper but ultimately its a wooden foundation.

It sounds like your builder wants to do a post and pier foundation, just with the 2 x 10s essentially at grade, almost like a grade beam. (look these up on Wikipedia and other sites).

Piers and grade beams are normally done in concrete (see link) at ground level, but wooden piers (or piles) can be done to raise up a house in a flood area.

Look instead to . . . . . Perma Column

That way you'll have concrete in ground only, then attach wooden poles upright.

Several GJer's have built Perma-Column pole barns.

So I was looking at getting a Menards kit and doing it myself. I plan to prep all the concreat myself and do in floor heat. So the drawl back would be a mute point if my options are post and pier foundation vs pole barn?

Im trying to build the garage, doors, insulate and pour for under $16k

I was going in the 95% DIY but thought I would get quotes along the way. All I think I need is a concreat finisher.

Thanks for the proper name for the methood.

There are a couple of Ohio builds here on GJ that do exactly what you've described. As soon as I saw the title I wondered to myself if you were from Ohio.

I'll try to find one and edit my post with the link.

[EDIT] Well that was easy...
