Floor Armor™ Product Information
This absolutely will not answer every possible question but it is a start. At some point soon we will do some hands on product training. We also need to keep track of questions that come in because chances are if one person is asking something, others are likely thinking it.
How large of an area will Floor Armor™ cover?
The basic kit comes with two gallons of Floor Armor™ which will cover, on average, 400 square feet or a 20’ x 20’ area.
The clear coat is usually applied with one covering coat and when applied over Floor Armor™, a gallon will cover 400 square feet.
The Basic Kit comes with two gallons. What about priming?
The first gallon acts as both a primer and sealing coat. The second gallon is the top coat.
The first coat will not have uniform coverage. This is because it is penetrating into the concrete and creating a bond.
What's the best way to remove oil and grease from the floor prior to coating?
Each Floor Armor™ Basic Kit comes with 8oz of POR-15 Grease & Oil Remover. Simply apply to the areas with grease and oil spots and the areas will be neutralized and Floor Armor™ can be painted right over the areas. If floor has many areas like this, extra Grease & Oil Remover may be needed.
Is muriatic acid or other treatments required before painting?
Competitive products require using either muriatic acid or flooding floors with water for surface preparation. This results in locking in moisture which causes deterioration of the concrete. The Floor Armor™ dry system is faster and better.
Can Floor Armor™ be applied over existing floor coatings?
Yes. Areas with poorly adhering paint must be addressed and those areas need to be prepared by removing the paint. In areas where the existing coating is tightly adhering and is difficult to remove, scuff with 80 grit sand paper to give the surface adequate surface profile to promote adhesion of the first coat of Floor Armor™.
Also, sweeping and vacuuming the floor as well as cleaning the area with Marine Clean would be a great idea to make sure surface does not have anything that would compromise adhesion on it.
And on a legal note, when discussion removal of any coating it is important to stress to the customer that before removing any paint system that may have lead, they should contact the EPA to find out more from the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or go to the following website:
www.epa.gov/lead.
What is the re-coat window for Floor Armor™ and Floor Armor™ Clear Coat?
The cure times for both Floor Armor™ and Floor Armor™ Clear Coat are identical and are tied directly to the presence of ambient humidity like most of our other products. Keep in mind this is an estimate and actual cure times may differ.
% Ambient Humidity Timeframe
85% 4-5 hours
80% 5-6 hours
75% 6-7 hours
70% 7-8 hours
65% 9-10 hours
60% 10-11 hours
Less than 60% 12 plus hours
Is Floor Armor™ a single or dual component coating?
Floor Armor™ and Floor Armor™ Clear are dual component products. Simply open Part A and Part B containers and pour contents of Part B into the Part A Can and thoroughly stir for approximately 5 minutes. Let sit for approximately 10-15 minutes and then stir again for approximately 2 minutes.
It is important for Part B (Crosslink Catalyst) to be thoroughly mixed with Part A.
What about areas in need of repair with chips, cracks or deep scratches in the concrete?
There are several options:
POR-Patch
Epoxy Putty
Or fill in area with a mixture of POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint and DRY sand. Sand has to be completely dry.
Also, if customer is adding decorative chips and a clear coat, the chips will pull the eye away from areas that are irregular with minor imperfections.
What are the full cure times of Floor Armor™?
Surface should be ready for light foot traffic in 6-12 hours and normal foot traffic in 24 hours. Allow 48-72 hours for full cure, placement of heavy items such as tool boxes and vehicle traffic.
Is Floor Armor™ slippery? What about the gloss?
Floor Armor™ has a glossy finish. If safety is a concern due to the floor being wet, both kits come with anti-slip aggregate. The best way to apply this anti-slip aggregate is to mix it to the desired texture into the topcoat and then roll out.
How long will Floor Armor™ last? Does the addition of a clear coat increase the durability of Floor Armor™?
Floor Armor™ is engineered to have a permanent bond to concrete and will last for many years, if not a lifetime, in many cases. In areas where heavy traffic is a concern, the addition of a 3rd coat or a clear coat will make the coating more durable.
Will oil, gas, brake fluid, transmission fluid, or antifreeze affect Floor Armor™?
Floor Armor™ is much more resistant to chemicals than any of the other kits or concrete paints on the market currently. Floor Armor™ is a urethane and much more resistant to all chemicals (including oil, fuel, anti-freeze, etc) than the epoxies on the market.
It is wise to wipe up such spills as they occur.
Is Floor Armor™ affected by road salt?
No. The basic kit is plenty resistant to salt due to the inherent chemical resistant properties of Floor Armor™. The clear coat is not needed for salt resistance. When asked, tell the customer to take note of the epoxies kits that suggest a clear coat when exposed to salt.
How is Floor Armor™ different than the hardware and department store or other concrete painting products?
Floor Armor™ uses low VOC solvent based urethane technology as opposed to epoxy products that are widely available. In comparison:
Epoxies are brittle and do not expand and contract with concrete
Epoxies are not as impact and abrasion resistant
Epoxies are not as UV resistant
Is Floor Armor™ subject to
hot-tire pickup?
Not after the product is fully cured. Other kits include “paw prints” which are plastic sheets that are supposed to go under car tires for the few weeks after application.
How do you apply the decorative vinyl chips?
Available in: blue mix, black mix and tan mix
The decorative chips are to be broadcast in the wet Floor Armor™ Topcoat (2nd coat).
As each 4’ x 4’ section is completed, broadcast the desired amount of chips by tossing chips underhand in the wet topcoat. Underhand tossing allows chips to fall flat and lay evenly. DO NOT throw chips side arm or over hand.
Keep the chip broadcast in each section consistent for a uniform look.
Apply clear coat according to directions in approximately 8-12 hours however recommend based on recoat window chart above.
* DO NOT MIX CHIPS WITH FLOOR ARMOR™ TOPCOAT OR CLEAR COAT
Does Floor Armor™ have flammable fumes?
Solvent in any paint can be flammable and all painting should be done is well ventilated areas. We recommend that pilot lights and electrical switches in an enclosed area must be turned OFF before and during the application of solvent-based coatings. Once fumes from coatings have completely dissipated, pilot light flame(s) may be re-ignited.
What about painting over new concrete?
New concrete must cure for at least 30 days at 75 degrees F prior to the application.
Can Floor Armor™ be used outdoors?
Yes. Pay careful attention to the weather when applying and while coating system is curing.
Does Floor Armor™ have an odor?
Floor Armor™ is a low VOC solvent based urethane and gives off odor during application. After it cures, there will be no odor.
What else is needed that does not come with the kit?
What a customer needs to pick-up at a local hardware store:
(1) Paint roller extension or threaded broom handle
(1) Metal roller tray
(2) Plastic roller tray inserts
(1) Roll professional painters tape
Why is it necessary to purchase a kit? Can a customer purchase the materials only?
The kit has all the materials a customer needs to do the job right. After they purchase a kit we can sell them what they need.
What is the 2.5” chip brush for?
Use the provided 2.5” trim brush to apply an even coat around the perimeter surface and difficult to reach areas.
