I pulled the trigger. Decided to have my garage tiled. I know. This is a diy kind of forum and guys are finding awesome tile for a buck or two a foot or a smoking deal on install. That isn't my luck or experience. It is gonna cost me. My garage is 30x40 and after lurking and reading many diy posts from Jack, slick, t4 and many others on their tile installs, I knew that porcelain was the product for me. I had the house bathrooms redone last summer and was thoroughly impressed with my installers eye for detail and work ethic. Anything I could have saved in labor, I decided to spend on quality. I have tiled a floor before. Those that look at it say it looks nice. I did a good job on layout and spacing. Where my kitchen floor lacks is in lippage or level edges. That and a 150 square foot kitchen and laundry room is way different than my 1200 sq ft garage. I'll post pics of the space soon and let you know more. The project won't be getting started until September or October, but I'll post pics along the way as if it were my diy project, just with fewer aches.

That is the most creative use of spare/off-season tires i have ever seen.

I look forward to seeing how your floor comes out.

Your color scheme is nice!
Really like that blue...

Thanks, had them stacked in the corner from the Mustang. Fun to see the rims through the glass.

Feeling reluctant to share. Maybe because it is a ridiculous amount of money. I'll say that the tile and materials came to over $5k. Install is on top of that. [emoji16]. It is a commercial grade porcelain with a 5 rating. I'll snap a pic of the sample board before I leave for work.

Thanks. Just the start. I have more plans I'll run past the members for storage, workbenches and a/c. Love this site!

I was wrong. It appears the tile is rated 4 -commercial and has a lot of variation. We chose the Almond colors in an 18x18 size. These pics are from the sample board.

I think this will be bright and clean. With the darker wall color, which we like, the brighter floors should work well. I expect that I'll end up with darker cabinet doors for the workbench and the storage cabinets. Feedback?

Awesome project!

Just know that if you drop a small screw, with the variegated pattern it will be a little harder to find. I have a nice 24" magnet bar on wheels that makes short work of finding anything I drop, though my tile is pretty uniform in color. Still easier to find things than flakes in epoxy.

Tile is not necessarily the cheapest option, but it sure makes for an awesome floor. You will be happy when you get 'er all down.

Keep the pics coming!

Thanks Ray. I read through your post last Sunday...again. You were definitely a positive influence to my decision to tile.

I don't think $4-5/sqft is out of line for having it done. You could easily spend half that on epoxy or plastic tile.

I agree. When you figure out how much income that is per week, that is cheap labor or at least reasonable. I'm happy to pay him a wage to keep him in business and use his excellent craftsmanship again. Btw, his is more than that and I'm okay with it.

More detail on the garage. It was built in 2010 as large as local zoning could allow. 30x40 with 10' walls. That's fine I suppose. It fits the scale of my site well. I had always intended to heat the garage and friends and builders said radiant floor heat was the way to go, so when we built, I added the insulation and tubes with plans to add the heat source in the future. I'm in a village on a corner lot and the drive to the garage comes off a different street than my house drive. I park in the detached garage daily and my wife parks in the house garage. It works well for us. About a year after it was built I spray foamed and dry walled the garage, trimmed out the windows and doors in a South American hardwood, I can never remember the name of it. But, it is beautiful, as you see it, that is only a clear on the wood, no stain. Installed the galvanized wainscot and painted. I told the drywall guy it was to be finished like living space. However, it wasn't a very good mud job. It needs some work to match what my expectations are. By the way. They are high. [emoji4]. The following year I had my plumber buddy install a beautiful Lochinvar boiler setup. Super efficient system. Not an issue yet. If you're like me you are assuming that no work gets done in there, I do use it. Albeit for small projects. I'm not building a '32 Ford or swapping an engine in my daily driver. They are usually projects on my snowmobiles, lawnmower, swapping wheels on the car, planning a brake job on the Ram. But when tools are cleaned up, we use this space to entertain. The pics were taken 15 minutes after we had our local Rotary Club over for cold drinks and snacks when they wrapped up a civic project. Another big gathering planned for tomorrow night. Part of the reason for tile. It looks high end, wears like iron and cleans up quick. That fits my needs.

Nice Gt, reminds me of my old 95'

Thanks. It's 96 Cobra. I bought it 4 months after this garage was built. I finally had space for a toy again and filled the spot when I found it for sale on the side of the road. It's a fun car the wife, kids and I can all use. I don't worry about the kids climbing all over it or spilling their ice cream. It cleans up easily. This toy I'm pretty relaxed about.

I did a terrible job of documenting the party last night. We had a concert across the street at our local bandshell. Community festival put on a great 70s, 80s, and 90s rock band. We've been hosting a garage party for a few years now. The garage door opens up facing the bandshell, anyway. It is a great location for a party to gather with friends and family. This is a big reason for my wife's willingness to turn the garage into such a high end/high dollar build. She loves the ability to turn the garage into an entertaining space with very little effort. That means I have a green light to put down the tile and add more built in cabinets to put away all the tools, cans, compressors, hoses, etc so all you see is the candy. I wish I had access to a design program. I'd share my plans for the storage closet, workbench and "kitchenette" cabinets. Anyone have an idea for this?

Hey Ford Fanatic, congrats on the purchase of the 86 GT, I was following the thread on the Four Eyed forum. Sweet ride for the money!

Thanks Dakota.

I actually got it at a little better than his "firm" price

After getting it home and looking through all the receipts he gave me, it had about $3K in after market parts and he had receipts for almost $3K in recent work he had done also. It's a win win in my book.

You are one of the only other people who I have ever seen stagger a tile like that. It looks so much better than a solid grid! I did it that way in my kitchen with vinyl tile, and love it!

How do you like the porcelain in the garage? Do you have trouble with floor jacks and creepers rolling across the joints?

I was going to do an epoxy floor, but I'm seriously considering tile as well!

Well tile install is supposed to start tomorrow. I'm pretty excited. The plan is to work one half at a time. I spent part of my afternoon cleaning and moving stuff so he has room to work. I'll do my best to post pictures so there is an update each evening. I'm really excited to get the project started. They will be 18x18 tiles and I'm going for the staggered look.

Not much happening today. The half he's starting with was primed and supplies and equipment delivered. He laid out a few tiles and they happen to lay out perfectly between the saw cut expansion joints. A bit of luck there! As CaveCreek Ray emphasizes "honor the expansion joints". With a heated and insulated floor I wasn't too worried about much movement, but, it can't hurt to be lucky. [emoji4]22d334c41cbc7da35c0ce317dea0dd94.jpg4fd589a4425b6ee86cad547e1ddd9c27.jpg

I'll have to see the floor completed. The Tiles look less tan and more peachy for the brown tones. I hope it blends in more when less of the gray floor is showing. [emoji51] I like the size though. The 18x18 are big and the grout joints are tight. I know it's going to be nice when it's done!

What I would first start with is covering that ungodly giant M with something more pleasing to the eye. Like a giant O. It would compliment the tile more better.

Lol. I'm sure that would look much better in your garage. Not happening here!
