Got to the spread this morning and were greeted with weather not fit for a duck.
The excavation was flooded, so could not set the second bent.
Did get the crane moved for the next pick and got all the rafters shook out.
Really limited space to make this all happen.
They will pump the excavation in the morning and we will try again.
Early quit.

My goodness. I read the dimensions on the plans and the scale of it just didn't really come into focus until it's getting installed.

What fantastic talent there Royce. Thanks for sharing with us!

And all

Had a good day today
A little rain this morning, but turned into a beautiful day.
Pumped the excavation and set the second bent.

Finished the day with one bent, three rafters and one arch hung.
Great day with good friends, that are also jam up hands.

Incredible progress! Are the bases set in concrete, or on concrete and the attachment between rafters hold it all rigidly together? Are they planning to paint it at the end of assembly? That crane looks fairly vintage, but still doing the job! What do the rafter frames weigh, each?

Thanks Matt,
There is an attachment plate cast into the concrete foundation, that the columns are welded to.
The finish will be rust.
I'd guess the crane is 50 or 60 years old and still chugging.
The rafters should weigh around 2700# apiece.

That is an awesome project Royce. If you don't have a project lined up after this one, I'm sure there is a river or gorge somewhere in Alaska that needs a bridge built across it. :lol_hitti. Very nice work!

Thank you kindly Jay,
I am reasonably sure this will be be the last big one for me, but you never can tell.

Had another good day today, last of the rafters and arch hung, as well as a few purlins set.

Wow! how does a person follow that one up.
That is very impressive, I hope you get the chance in the future to do more of this type of work.

Thanks Hop,

Roger,
As far as corrosion goes, the area where the columns meet the ground could be a problem area, if not sealed and protected from water.
Other than that, in this climate, it should be good for many moons.

No doubt Marty,

Finished up today tacking off purlins and welded out the tops of the column reducers.
My roll in this project is complete, phew!

There is a day or two of welding for the owner to do and then hang the tin.
I'll post a few pics when it is done.

It would be cool if you could put a little logo plate or your name somewhere inconspicuous, someone would probably like to see the craftsmen involved a couple hundred years from now. Another Fantastic Project! Thanks as always for sharing

Thanks Matt and it is my pleasure to share.
My plan is to write a note about the project, put it in a steel capsule and drop it in one of the arches.
That way whenever it is demolished by whoever, they will find out about the particulars of structure.

I did that with a lake cabin I built 25 years ago, put it in a legal envelope with a $100 bill on top of a kitchen corner cabinet that butted up to an 8x8 structural beam. Only way anyone will ever find it is if they remove the upper cabinets. 6 hand printed yellow legal pages with all the construction details, workers names, sources for the materials (a lot of salvaged timbers) and a copy of the plans and construction photos. I'll probably be long gone when it surfaces, but who knows?

Excellent Puget,
It is fun thinking about who will stumble on to it and the smile it brings to them.

We did a time capsule in one of our deck columns.
All the kids and grandkids that could write, each wrote a note and provided a trinket for the cause.

Or, with my luck, the place will burn down, no one will ever see it and I'll be out the $100.
