Possible Flaw in Snap-on Ratchet

I bought a Snap-on FHF80 off the truck last week. There is a nick in the chrome plated steel next to the cover plate on the ratchet head. It is not that big of a deal; however, I can catch it with my finger nail and it bugs me. If I couldn't catch it with my finger nail, then I would consider it a minor scratch and I'd be fine with that. What would you guys do? The rest of the ratchet is flawless except for that one nick.

Did you put the nick there from using it this week? Why didn't you notice it while you were fondling it on the truck and ask for another one?

New tools are expensive and they should be flawless. They're going to get scratched, dinged, worn, etc through work but, I'd want a new tool to be free of defects.:dunno:

OH!!!

A FLAW!!!!

Say it isn't so!!!!

Quit polishing the damn thing and use it, soon you'll never know the FLAW is there.

'Course I guess if I'd paid the ridiculous price they want for those ratchets I might not like it either.

Have any photos of the damage?

It's that nick on the very edge to the right of the screw right next to the cover plate. If it was on the other side of the ratchet head, I could have filed it out, but being where it's at now, there's nothing I can do about it.

The nick was there when I bought it, but I didn't notice it until the next day. I usually check the tools over closely before buying them, but the dealer gets offended whenever I do that. He says it's a tool, not a diamond ring.

Perhaps but some tools are as expensive as jewelry and as the paying customer, it's your choice as to how and where you spend your hard earned money.

Nothing to add here other than I can't tell you how many times I've caught myself using a ratchet to finesse something into place before it hits me, 'you're smacking a hundred dollar ratchet like it was a POS' and I get up to get a hammer. Never have totally hurt one but I have added character to one. I can however say that wouldn't really bother me, if some of you guys saw what us body men see one a new car lot, you would never buy a new car!

I guess the attitude of your dealer is what bothers me. I would say, "So instead me me paying you $X for it, I'll pay $Y for it. After all, it's only paper, not gold...."

See how he likes that answer.....

I agree with your dealer, get over it! its a nick, a tool that is used gets scratches, dings and nicks if it was mine after a few weeks it would have a lot more flaws than that. If you cannot handle one little chip in the chrome send it my way and I'll use it.;)

I think if you don't point out your dissatisfaction, the guy when then figure, "I can sell this bloke snow in the winter time", versus, "Let me do the right thing by this guy, he's a PITA, but he buys a lot from me".

"Let's Hear it for the? I'd be embarrassed to start a thread about a Flaw, and follow up with that Picture Crowd"

@Op Just Poking Fun, As always if your not happy, continue to push no matter how silly some (me) think it is, It's your money. If all else fails, try a Hunger strike till you get your way.

@Poncho Sorry for stealing your tag line, it's seemingly burned into my brain.

Doesn't bother me one bit. I've always had the theory if you don't like it, don't read it. Let me put on my concerned look........

As I read some of the responses I am starting to see what's wrong with this country today.

Not sure if you're saying...
"People should be happy with what they have. That what's wrong with the country these days"
OR
"People shouldn't accept mediocrity. You pay good money you should get what you paid for, that's what's wrong with the country these days"

I think the OP should've paid more attention when he purchased the tool.

I brought it to the attention of my dealer and he said that I'm full of prunes and should get over it.

In this case, I think it's "much ado about nothing" but if the dealer really did act that way I'd tell him to "get over the fact" that you'll no longer be doing business with him.

You're the customer and in return for the huge premium you pay for dealer support you should get first class treatment. He has no business telling you what defects you need to live with.

If I were the dealer I'd graciously hand you another one and once you're gone put that ratchet right back on the truck's sale rack.

Looks like a center punch indent, maybe someone was board playing with a spring loaded punch. As someone in the industrial equipment field id have never noticed that. get it dirty.

You should let this one slide. The life of a hand tool is about as glamorous as the minivan it's being used under.

I think the OP should've paid more attention when he purchased the tool.

It was more the "beat the windshield in with it", "call and demand a replacement". Its s a tool, it'll have many more nicks before its all said and done.

Try talking again with the guy you bought it from, he probably didn't think you were serious with it being such a small issue. My guess would be when the drill starting to machine out the inside for the ratchets it was misaligned.

If the chrome is missing it is damage. If the chrome is intact it is a flaw. Using a file on it is a mistake either way. I had some sharp chrome on a dual 80 ratchet handle (new) exchanged no problem. If your "franchisee" really talks to you that way, he should be eating that ratchet one way or the other.

OP if you want to get a replacement, go do it. That type of stuff does not bother me but if I was paying snap on prices for stuff then I would have a problem. It is like if you bought a new car but it has a dent in it. Sure it does not affect the functionality but if you buy something new, it should look it too.

I may ask Snap-on to send me a bare empty ratchet head since the rest of the ratchet is fine. I know how to reassemble it.

This.

I'm not sure I'd care enough on that small issue, but if you do, your dealer shouldn't hassle you about it.

If it's really nothing to the dealer, why doesn't he just exchange you a different ratchet and sell your current ratchet to someone else at full price?

I wish you luck but I think they will likely tell you that sending you a ratchet without the guts is not an option. If anything, they will probably tell you to talk to your local driver.

I know it's not what you want to hear but I think you should chalk this up to a lesson learned and remember to take your magnifying glass next time you buy a ratchet.

BTW, I am a Snapon fan and have lots of Snapon stuff. The stuff you are pointing out is something I see all the time on new Snapon stuff.

IMO, your dealers attitude would bother me more than the flaw in the ratchet. Assuming that you paid full retail for the ratchet and didn't cause the damage to the ratchet yourself, I would talk to the dealer again and explain to him that I fully expected him to replace the ratchet.

+1 only potential problem is IF dealer actually said "Get Over It" . . . . that might mean he knew ahead of time that flaw was there . . . ? :dunno:

If no one noticed, then agree to just keep ratchet and put it to use.

Snappy dealer still does OWE YOU a favor in future for his poor choice of words, at a minimum.

Keep reminding dealer that he owes you a favor for that ratchet with flaw. Eventually he'll come through in the future.

Well gentlemen, I shipped it out tonight. We'll see what they do. The ratchet is still brand new, so they could turn around and sell it to someone else if they wanted to. I doubt anybody else would notice that nick. There's no telling what issues the replacement ratchet will have though. I might end up sending the replacement ratchet in next.
