okay, so ive been using my 1/4" corldess impact from matco for about 2 weeks now, 5 hours, m-f. its great and all but my problem is that i have to use a 1/4" to 3/8" adapter 95% percent of the time. well, not so much a problem, just that i choose to use it. but anyway, its only been about 2 weeks and now the socket/adapter almost slips right off whenever i point the gun downward. do you guys think its a manufacturing problem?? also, there seems to be ALOT of play with the anvil when its not in use and there is an o-ring on the anvil thats already starting to slowly split.

i THINK theres such a thing as having a hole in the anvil where you can place a pin through as well as with a socket, or in my case an adapter, but my anvil doesnt have one. you guys think its possible for me to drill in a small hole through the anvil so i can just "lock" my adapter onto the gun? lol sounds kinda dumb but just was an idea.

what do you guys suggest? or maybe i can bring it up with matco about the oring and stuff...

If all that that's on the anvil is an o-ring, you retainer clip is missing. Get a new & one problem solved. You could use the pin type of retainer as well if you want it more secure.

Matco shpould have what you need. Or "just clips" makes retaining rings for all drive sizes too.

You really should get a 3/8" gun.

Dan

x2.

If you are using the adapter a lot, then you need to move up in gun size.

What brand and part no. is your adapter? Many are not rated for impact use and the female square drive of the adapter will deform over time making for a loose fit and then failure.

BTDT. Even with Snap-On adapters. (That are stamped "not for use on impact tools" so I knew the rules and the tool proved it to me...LOLOLOL)

If you use non-impact adapters, extensions or sockets on a retaining ring anvil, it can grip them so tight they become difficult to remove. Enough removal cycles can easily split the o-ring under the snap ring rendering it useless. That's how I tore the o-ring out of my brand new M12 impact gun. After that experience I only use impact sockets, adapters and extensions with my M12 and air impact gun.

You can easily fix the anvil using the Just Clips kit. I bought the JCP135 kit to replace the o-ring and snap ring on the M12. The JCP135 kit however, doesn't include any 1/4" drive snap rings so you'll also need the JC2505 1/4" snap rings.

And I agree with the others ... get a 3/8" cordless.

This kit fits the M12 Impact? I tried a new o-ring and hog ring (from Just Clip on my Makita 12v impact and it wouldn't work :(

Yes ... it came with the slim o-ring same as what came off and it worked fine. What didn't work for you?

thanks for the replies. i think ill look into the JustClip kits.

i found out my adapter was made of chrome vanadium[sp] which arent good as impact chrome molybdenum so i picked up a Mac one and ill test it out after labor day.

i actually did intend on getting a 3/8 cordless but the total size of it matched my 1/2 cordless. which is why i opted for this one which only stands at 6.2 inches

Makita impacts are the exception. They have a non standard hog ring that the justclips kits won't service. You have to get a Makita hog ring or get the ones that specify "for electric/cordless impacts"

Chrome vanadium tools can ruin your anvil over time, because of their hardness.

Take a look inside the drive side of the adapter where the anvil inserts; if you see detents on the four sides, then there's potential to damage the hog ring. I actually tried attaching a Milwaukee Shockwave 3/8" impact to 1/4" hex adapter to my M12 when I tore up the o-ring. The adapter went on real tight and took even more effort to remove. Later I learned it has the detents in the 3/8" drive end ... not good for an impact duty adapter. Check out the M12 ... it's a rather compact gun.

that m12 does look good, and for only a few bucks more than my matco. too bad its only 12V tho for a 3/8. i just got off the phone with matco and since theve got an awesome return policy, i may just send it back for a refund and get a milwaukee from grainger.

The M12 does have limitations of modest torque, but it's always a compromise between wanting a compact size and loads of power/speed. It is rated at 83 lb-ft so I checked to see if it would remove the lug nuts on my Honda Odyssey, which were torqued to 80 lb-ft. It hammered on the nut for what seemed like 10 seconds and then it started turning and came right off. I checked this both with the compact battery and the high-capacity XC battery and it removed the lug nut with both batteries.

One of my frequently used tools. My question is why use 3/8" sockets with it ? I've had one of the Matco Infinium 1/4" impacts since their inception and have had zero issues with it. Strong as an Ox and great battery life. I do use impact sockets with it. Make the investment in the 1/4" impact sockets and get the most out of the tool.
