I only have a few pieces of Wright so far, but the little contoured 1/4" ratchet is like a gem, I enjoy just holding it. That's a Nickel for scale in the photos.

That ratchet is ******..

I very recently bought a set of metric combinatiom wrenches (752). They do not have the "ridges" that are shown on many of the combo wrenches on this thread. Before I ordered them, I assumed they all had the Wright Grip rides. Did I get an NOS wrench set? Or do did I need to order something the Wright Grip specifically? If the latter, I never saw any difference in the numbering of the sets. Anyone have an explanation?

Thanks.

You may hav a nos set but then again maybe not. I went the the wright website and scrolled through their PDF catalog. The catalog only shows SAE wrenches available with the Wright Grip open ends. None of the metric wrench sets were labeled as Wright Grip. This is an example of industrial tool companies not offering tools for auto techs which is too bad because those Wright Grip wrenches are sweet.:wtf:

Wright Grip SAE only

Wright Grip is only available on SAE wrenches. None of the metric ones have it.

I'm not sure why either. Must be a recoup-the-cost-of-tooling type of decision. Maybe industrial users are still mostly SAE as opposed to the increasing use of metric even in domestic vehicles?

I stand corrected, thanks.

However, I do wonder, if Wright, then sells any NON Wrightgrip SAE wrenches?

Re: Wright Grip SAE only

I believe they do.

How does one find out definitively? I think I would rather have the Grip versions of the metric set I have, if it is indeed available. It is one of the reasons I wanted to purchase the set (in addition to the fact that they are VERY well made tool).

Thanks for all of the responses. I would feel better if indeed I did not get them because they are not available in metric.

Wright Grip isnt currently available in Metric, It was one of the things that Wright was looking into and even if you look at the Catalog it shows one in a picture.

What you have done, is a misquote. He quoted me and my question (WrightGrip, SAE, and NON Wrightgrip, SAE).

Best bet, is to contact Wright, directly, through their website. And if you find they are going to make Wrightgrip metric, LET US KNOW!

Doh!!! You made my brain hurt figuring out how I misquoted. I'll try to contact them this week and find out.

Thanks.

I have spoken with Richard Hoff from TR Tool Supply. He sent me a 9/16 wrench to check out Wright quality. I was so impressed I'm trying to get an order together. I asked him about Wright Grip and he confirmed it's only available in SAE, not metric.

BTW, he must be a busy boy because I've been waiting quite a while for a quote from him. Maybe email isn't his main communication tool. When I called him personally he picked up his own phone. How unusual nowadays, no "Your call is very important to us.........." Anyway, maybe give him a call and he can direct you.

On those older tools without "Made in USA" on them, I have LOTS of really old tools, and I can tell you that, many years ago it was not legally required, and often not considered to be necessary...since "foreign" tools from Europe were generally considered to be very high quality themselves. The Asian and Mexican tool invasion had not yet begun....

My first tool set as a teen was a Wright set my stepdad gave me, which I now find funny because he worked part time at Fairmount Tool. I have a number of Wright tools but these are the only ones I have on the computer. Picked the set up last week at a garage sale then went back two days later and pickup up 3 more - 13/16, 15/16 & 1". At the same sale l picked up a set of 6pt 1/2 Dr impact sockets from 7/16 to 1-1/4.
Hiball, you wouldn't have an extra 7/8" 1128 combo with a 'T' or close, date stamp, would you????

I have the 3/8 in the 1/4 body. It's a great tool. Based on it, I am thinking of buying one of their regular size 3/8 and 1/2 inch ratchets, but I'm a bit concerned about the tooth count and the amount of arc needed. How to they compare to other brands in this sense?

Thanks.

i believe the way wright ratchets are designed they have about the same arc if not less than a dual 80 snap-on.

This is true for 3/8" and 1/2" drive Wright ratchets that have a double paw type mechanism. The 1/4" drive, compact 3/8" drive, and many older 3/8" and 1/2" drive Wright round head ratchets have single paw guts with more typical ratcheting arcs. Wright did not change the model #s on the ratchets when they went to all double paw internals on the 3/8" and 1/2" ratchets, so buyer beware if you are looking for a double paw ratchet in the used market.

I don't have any sets, except three SAE line wrenches in a levi pouch. But I have a bin filled with lots of Wright brand tools. Quality seems superb to me. That one old breaker bar is a little surface rusted now, but I'll bet it would clean up nicely. I have some BIG Wright sockets in there too.

Hot forged U.S. 4140 steel.

Have complete Metric and S.A.E. sets (use these so I don't scratch my Snap-on wrenches :))

Here are some pix of a big old 3/4" drive Wright brand ratchet. It's an older unit, but still works. It is 24.5 inches long (62.23 cm). Haven't had time to clean it up yet...
Wright3-4ratchet1.jpg

Top side of handle reads, "Wright" and "USA" and two numerals that are hard to read, but appear to be: "90". Surely that's not a date code? I would guess this ratchet to be much older than 1990, just based on where I got it from.

Bottom side of big old ratchet handle reads, "6400-2 OIL ONLY"

Like I said before, I haven't had time to clean up this big old ratchet yet. But I see no engravings, and I think it will look pretty good after some elbow grease.

I think it is pretty cool. What do you guys think?

Well, I'll be darned. :headscrat

I got this one from my cousin, who was a full-time automotive technician for 30 plus years, finishing his career for BP Pro Care as a multi-store manager. Lots of his tools came to him from his dad, and many of them are really old. I just assumed that this old heavyweight was made in the 50's or 60's.

Oh well, I guess I know what happens when you "assume" anything. :lol_hitti
