Looks like there may have been room in the box for another row of sockets.

So, some of you know we had a little battle with Hurricane Helene in these North Carolina mountains back in September 2024. River flooding took away my 24' enclosed trailer and a huge collection of Thorsen, Billings, Bonney and Husky sets. My shop and garage received 5' of flood water and everything was topsy turvey by the time the water receded. Well, thanks to a very strong magnet and a shovel, I just found several Thorsen wrenches and my completed #1214 set. The wrenches cleaned up pretty good but the 1214 set is gonna need some more love. Very happy to recover these...made my day! Gonna have to get a new metal detector cause the one I had in the garage was non-recoverable.1000024243.jpg1000024244.jpg

^ Tom, I have a nice clean 2016 I'll put in a bag for you. (flat-panel style, will match the 2014 and 2018 in your photo above)
Brian, Thanks but I think I have three of them on the display boards already! Now, still missing some screwdriver and pliers for those boards so if ya run into any of that let me know. Funny how the Southeast has tons of Thorsen sockets and drivers but I never see the screwdrivers and pliers anywhere.

I have this really nice case so I ordered a 1/4 speeder hoping it would fit…maybe it’s not the right era speeder? Part decal on outside is gone but it looks like a 1420. Anyone know if the earlier 62M (one pictured is a MFD USA) are different? To me it looks like the case in catalog is either longer or the socket section is smaller. Welcome to the wonderful world of Thorsen!
Another brand where the same part number of speeder varies in length from one to another.
I don't have the answer to your question, but I think there's another guy here who can offer some insight......
He'll be around probably in about... 5 hours or so.
In the meantime, looks like you got the part number correct.
1420 = 1/4 drive / 20 pieces
(Thorsen's part numbering system is a no-brainer.)

I don’t have a 1420 set but the socket tray on your box looks kind of long to me. I also don’t seem to have a particularly early 62M so I can’t tell if the earlier speeder would fit.IMG_0799.png

Yeah I agree the speeder would fit nicely if the socket tray was shorter like it depicted in catalog. I will get measurements of my speeder later. This is a common problem I have with speeders and cases(Plomb/P&C mostly) 😆

^ You will run into the same thing with the early 3208 Indestro speeder. Came in different lengths. Same part number.

If I'm not mistaken, Don has had to do some "improvising" to fit speeders into boxes.

Hey,

I found a Thorsen 56J 3/8 drive 9" extension the other day. Checked the 1931, 1960s, 1980s catalogs and don't see the 56J. Is it a unicorn?

yep.

hey, are you collecting any "ACTION", Tom?
I currently have a unknown # 1/4 & 3/8 drive set, a #3809A 3/8 drive set and a #3812 3/8 drive set that I'm actively restocking. I've recently acquired a whole bunch of Action 1/2 drive stuff so I'm looking for an Action box to put it in. Those 3/8 sets just lack a 12JA flex handle, #614 618 and 620 deep sockets, and 300XA series sockets of varying sizes.

Thorsen made, General Tool (G.T.) branded, double box 1930's 1/2 X 7/16 wrench. With friends.

I found a General Tool socket this weekend at a swap meet. It is marked: "G.T. 3 13-16".
(The G.T. is inside a smooshed hex outline like seen on P&C tools).
Unsure if this is a regular deep socket or a spark plug socket.

@MR.X is the Xpert on this company. This thread is the only place I've seen General Tool mentioned on this forum. Wonder if we ought to have a separate thread for this Portland company?
