I searched and didn't find too many pictures so I figured I'd start a thread. I'm looking for lighting options and wanted to see what some of you have come up with. I have a typical 2 car garage and with the exception of the light on the 2 garage door openers, there is just one light bulb in the center of the garage.

So post up whacha got!! :bounce:

Not that this needs a pic to explain but at your request. I went ultra cheap for lighting...porcelain bulb holders. I guess ultra cheap would have been the plastic ones they make these days but the porcelain was only $0.26 more each or something. I have 16 in my 26x28 in 4 rows x 4 columns (basically 6' spacing). In 2 rows I have 26W daylight, not warm, compact fluorescent lightbulbs(100W equiv) and in the other 2 rows are going (not in yet as you can see in the picture) regular 60w incandescents, these will be on a separate switch. The reason for this was obviously cost savings without sacrificing LIGHT. Total I spent less than the cost of 2 fluorescent tube fixtures. The reason for half incadescents is for quick response and winter performance. The CFLs do have a warm up period, especially in cold weather. I can tell you that with just the CFLs I have a very useable amount once warm, which is about three minutes. I expect it will be just awesome with the incandescents going at the same time. A will probably get 1 hanging tube fixture for task lighting over my bench/welding table and might try out the idea of mounting covered tube fixtures low on the walls for under vehicle lighting...I'll let everyone know how that works out.

I'm in the same boat as the OP so I'll be interested in what shows up here.

I only see the little red X where your pic is supposed to be.

Nothing special, Just you basic 3 rows of 6 inefficient T12`s with 4100K bulbs,
Even with the ceiling not painted (which it probably will never be) it is plenty bright

4 rows of 4 48" Lithonia shop light fixtures ($8.95 ea at HD) with 4100K Philips bulbs. Floor is 17'x21'. Whole setup was about $250. These hang from the rafters, above the stringers - my side walls are only 7' high, so I have no room for lights below the stringers.

The cheap fixtures hum at startup, and I can hear them late in the evening when the neighborhood gets very quiet. Background noise like music or TV would mask the hum completely.

Thats the route I'm going. 2 rows of 4 8 foot T-12's and a row of 3 8 footers. I asked the salesman about the T-8's but he they they don't start in cold weather as well, and also that they're more energy efficient because they don't put out as many candlepower (lumens?) of light per bulb.

Tried refreshing it - still not working.

Red X - Blue X - Color doesn't matter especially if you're color blind (not that I am).

Click on one of the single photo links in my sig (which always seems to work), then refresh the original page.

Not sure why this works, but when I don't see my picts, the above procedure works for me.

If anyone has any ideas why this would be, let me know.

Actually the T8's should start better in the cold. The T12's will phased out sonner or later.
I'm using T8's and am happy with light output compared to the T12's, but the electronic interferance is a PITA at times

I bought two 8' T8 flourscent fixtures to test the light output in my
30x40x12.4" each fixture takes 4-4' bulbs I am impressed with the light I was going to use these as drop down lights over my work bench area if they didn't put out enough light but I think I am going to buy a total of 6 more and stager them with two rows of three and one row of two in the middle and see what happens. I hope It works out ok for me.

Just like JCBird24 did and for the same reasons.. cost! I used 12 CFL's (100 W equivalent) in porcelain holders... There were 12 porcelain holders and wiring already there spaced about 8ft apart in a 24x36 garage with an 8ft ceiling. I didn't use the incandescents but the light is more than sufficient... white ceiling, walls and a concrete floor.

Twelve 4' T8 two bulb fixtures set up on three switches. Four lights per switch. That way I don't have to have them all on at once. Kinda like zoned lighting.:headscrat

Mine's similar to SteveL
I got a bunch of really nice 2 lamp t-8 fixtures out of a school that was being renovated. If I ever "need" more light, they can easily be reconfigured to hold 4 bulbs each.

i've got three rows of six fixtures, each row switched separately.
My shop is 28x28 with 9' ceilings.

I refuse to post up pics of my lighting as it disappoints me, I am sure it would make someone else happy with 7 8' T12s with old fixtures, but if I had the money to do it properly, there would be 10 maybe 12 T8 fixtures on several zones to achieve my life dream of one night opening the big door, flicking on all the lights to attract an alien or two down!

I'm surprised none of you are using Low bay Compact Flourescent fixtures.

Any reason why?

I went with eight foot long T-12 fluorescent light fixtures that have two bulbs in all my garages. In my a 30X50 shop addition with 12’ ceiling height, I installed three rows of 5 fixtures end to end with non-apertured (no uplight) shaded Lithonia fixtures. Even though I have semigloss white ceiling for reflection, I bought the shaded fixtures because I like they way they look. I arrived at the configuration from past garages and located them keeping in mind lift and bridge crane locations.

They all have the old fashion magnetic ballasts and T-12 60 Watt style bulbs. I understand that the newer T-8’s with the electronic ballasts are better,, they are quieter, put out more light per watt, and startup better in the cold. At the time I experimented with the T-8’s and still went with the T-12 with magnetic ballasts. First off all my garages are heated to 70 in the winter, and cooled to 78 in the summer so I don’t have a cold weather problems. I don’t find the buzzing that bad. At the time I had a savings of nearly $1,500.00 purchasing 50 T-12 fixtures and bulbs over T-8. Plus I bought 50 replacement bulbs, enough to last me years. More than enough to persuade me to use the T-12.
All in all I have very even lighting with more than ample lighting for my tired old eyes to see!

Picture before moving in day.

Here is a (NTS) layout of my lighting. In the main room 4 rows of t-12 8' units.

ShopGRIZlayout1bSmall.jpg

They are end to end 3x8,2x8,2x8,3x8 plus 1x8 near the overhead door (the only unshaded Flor. unit in this room) and 3 - 4' units. The red circles are standard light bulbs with the 6 in the middle 150 watt and switchable from any of the 4 doors into that room plus individual pull chain switches. These 6 lights give adequate lighting for most occasions along with task lighting. The 4 rows are switched in banks from the main 36" entrence door but each has its own pull chain sw. also. The Mill and Lathe room has one 200 watt bulb centered in the ~12' x 14' space. There are 2 unsheilded t-12 8 foot units and 2 more 4' units (task lighting above the lathes - one shown) to be mounted (suspended from the ceiling or on the underside of shelf) - a work in progress. Tractor room has a 200 watt bulb centered, 2 4' t-12 units and 75 watt light under the stairs in the compressor space.

...inefficient T12`s with 4100K bulbs,

so what would be a "better" as in more efficient flour.? - does efficiency also equate to "brighter" or a kind (color?) of light that is better for garage work? (11 foot ceilings...) - thanks, ed!

Three (3) dual 48" 32w T8's in a 2-car garage (20x20).

EDIT:
there is just one light bulb in the center of the garage.
Forgot to mention I had the same standard setup with one (1) 60w incandescent bulb...:wtf: As you can see in the pic, I used an octagon junction box and ran 1/2" EMT to the T8 fixtures and replaced the switch with a Leviton commercial grade occupancy sensor. Hope this helps!

What is everyone using from a colour#? 4100K, 5000K, or 6100K? I need to pick up 22 T8 32W bulbs this week.
