Assuming that is the ignition coil, you need a B+ and a ground. Being the one connects to a spade terminal, the black wire should see ground. It looks like there may be a witness mark on one of the mounting holes.

This was attempt to troubleshoot this saw. New: gas, plug, i have spark, cleaned carb, checked the coil gap (hit or miss). still a no go. Ordered a kit to replace the carb because I suspect the diaphragm.

Leaking primer bulb?

I've now got a second Poulan Pro 4218, 'cause the first one locked-up a month ago.

Douche bag meth addict squatters stole everything from the shop so a friend gifted this chain saw that hasnt run in a year. I hope the coil position is terrible critical. I used a feeler gauge at .014” . I have a good spark i guess.

I suspect bad fuel lines.

I removed the plug and put my rubber gloved thumb over the hole. Not a lot of compression or suction. When at TDC, the top of the piston has a little carbon on it. At any rate, I am rebuilding it and almost ready to add the cheap chinese carb kit I bought.

This new Poulan pro I got first started out rough on Low idle speed. So I buy a 21T Spline to adjust carb. Got that squared away at the same having another trouble (The main one!)
Having run a bit and all warmed up,(Running great on low idle) the choke pulls in and it dies. I have even tweaked more Low idle a little to see if thatsit! But that choke ain’t haven’t it. It just pulls itself right in a dies.
Does anyone have this ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE to help me??? Because I’m realizing through reviews and now expierience that these are freakin **** but will do the best I can to maintain it!

My first Poulan Pro 4218 was sold at half-price because the first owner couldn't get it to run. The store employee adjusted the carb, got it running good, and sold it to me. (I owned it for two or three years, not a lot of use until early summer this year. Locked-up on my nephew after two days of hard use. This then led by to buy the second one.)

So my first guess is to adjust the carb--is there a low-speed screw and a high-speed screw?

If no high-speed screw, perhaps there's a pinhole in the fuel tubing, or debris in the carb restricting fuel flow so that it needs the choke to run.

Update: I removed the muffler and looked at the piston through the exhaust port and can see clearly that the piston is scored… I bought a piston and cylinder on amazon for about $30.

If I had done this before ordering a carb, i would have saved $20 because there was probably nothing wrong with the old carb.

I went ahead and ordered the gasket kit for another $13 and make a gasket silicone. It cranked right up on the 3rd pull.

I also ordered a PULSE ENGINE TACHOMETER for maybe $15, i fergit.

I found somewhere that the idle speed spec should be from 2800-3200rpm. I played around with idle screw and low speed screw until right around 3200rpm and until it passed the dump test-inverting the saw at idle…..the high speed was good… I let it idle for about five mins and no issues! I cleaned and sharpened the chain.

It’s a new chainsaw! I learned almost everything i didn’t know about 2-cycle engines in this exercise. What fun!

I will post videos from youtube that explained what i did and the function of the “L”, “H” and idle screw, and dump test! I had a video i shot but it was not a file i could upload here.

There was another video where the english guy describes in detail the h, l, and idle screw. The cheap chinese small engine tach helped me adjust the engine. Those screws on mine , at least the L was out 1.25 turns….

The first thing you should do is remove the muffler-2 screws, which will expose a small cross section of the piston. With a flashlight look for scoring on the piston which will bring engine compression nearly to zero.
Similarly, you can remove the spark plug and put your thumb over the hole and gently pull the starter cord and sense the level of compression you have.
