Precision straight edge, beveled or flat?

I'm needing a straight edge to check head and deck flatness. A flat edge would work for what I want but I'm curious as to what a beveled edge would be used for? Advantages/disadvantages?

A wide edge is more likely to pick up debris and skew the reading.
A wide edge will more likely pick up the high spots/burrs on the surface..
A wide edge edge will block more light if using a visual check.

A wide edge is less likely to suffer damage from poor handling.

It also matters a bit if your just checking to see if it needs to go to the machine shop or if your the machinist that is doing the work.

The commercial straight edges I have for checking head and deck flatness all came flat, no bevel

Flat...both sides. I actually have never had a need for a beveled side...handy tool.

10-4. I'm just checking the block, the head is going off for new seats.

After thinking, a beveled edge would be a pain to check flatness with since you'd have to balance it while checking with feeler gauges.

Larry, I follow you on the points you made. Then I answered my own question above haha. Thanks guys.

Now off to find a 36" straight edge $$$$

Figure out if that will fit in the situation you have, if the engine is in the car...36" may be too long...

It's a 5.9 cummins, so it's close to that but I still planned to measure to see it it would fit.
