As I understand it, electronically variable pressure washers reduce the pump speed, and valve variable ones use a bypass/recirculation valve. Both methods also reduce flow volume.
Your ball valve would act as a restrictor, which is effectively what different nozzles do. A given washer module will have a range of acceptable nozzles - too small will make it work too hard, too big (or none) will make it run too fast. So your ball valve would need to be set corresponding within this range, which could probably be worked out by measuring volumes, but is a lot of hassle.
