I have a ~10-12 year old Craftsman power washer with a Honda GCV190 vertical shaft engine on it. (The GCV is the homeowner series, plastic timing gears, etc.).

Engine runs like a top, and appears to have the 22.2mm shaft diameter. The pump burned up on me today, and is toast.

There appear to be quite a few manufacturers of similar pumps out there. Any recommendations on a suggested pump brand to try? While I'd love to upgrade to a larger unit, at this point the engine is running like a top and seems to have a lot more life left in it, so I'd rather just throw a new pump on it. This is one of your standard residential vertical-shaft pressure washers. There are probably 25 brands that show up in a search, so I’m hoping someone has a brand recommendation.

Alternatively, I posted this over on Pirate and everyone said I should just get a new unit with a triplex pump. While that sounds great and all, I can’t see the utility in wasting a good running engine—and triplex pumps won’t run on a vertical shaft. Thoughts?

My neighbor had the same type of unit -- there were two types of pumps. His was the cheaper type and he upgraded to the better style from a name brand company.

I think it was around $140 .. works better than new .. the engines run forever.

I bought a pressure washer for $25, as I wanted the frame/wheels for a project. The pump was also toast. The Honda engine ran great, and I sold it to a student at a university who wanted to tear it down and learn about it. He said that he wanted to work for Honda when he graduated.

I just bought a Troy-Bilt a couple weeks ago that had the GCV Honda engine on it. Bought it for $40 because it didn't make any pressure. Are you sure the pump is destroyed? Mine had an Annovi Reverberi pump, and I found a broken spring and fixed it for about $8. Works great now.

I was impressed with how rebuildable the AR pump was - I would recommend it.

Yeah, I checked it out pretty thoroughly, as I've been able to just clean and rebuild the bypass cylinder before. Pump is shot.

The vertical shaft power washers use a 7/8 shaft. This is the same standard size as any Briggs and Stratton powered push mower. Buy a cheap replacement off of Amazon reading reviews to decide. There are few differences in the triplex styles. These are more of a throw away pump, inherently by the design(oiless). Amazon has em for $100 and less. Bolt pattern, and indexing of the inlet and outlets are the main difference.
The horizontal shaft power washers are a better design, and use crankcase oil that is serviceable. I sold my cheap vertical power washer and got a deal on a 4,000 psi 4gpm Honda one. The thing is super powerful, and glad I upgraded.
