Problem with the Milwaukee 2460 rotary tool

Is it the collet or do I have a bad mandrel ? The collet will not clamp down on the mandrel with sufficient force for me to tighten/loosen the screw that holds the fiber disk use for cutting small (<1/4") bolts !

Anyone else have this problem ? Solution ?

(Old Dremel tool works fine with that mandrel, but that collet will not fit into the 2460 !)

Mine is < 1yr old, but I haven't had any problems with the Milwaukee collet / collet nut.

It seems everyone solves the problem with Dremel brand pieces.

Also, perhaps an M18 Fuel Surge impact driver would help loosen the screw. j/k.

Have you measured the diameter of the shank of the mandrel with a caliper or micrometer? When you take the collet out of the tool and slide it on the shank of mandrel is there play or is it a pretty tight fit and just barely slides along the shaft?

I feel like my rotary tool came with a second collet, could you try that?

But I bought a dremel chuck almost immediately for my Milwaukee. Way easier and I can use tools or drill bits that aren't 1/8" shank.

I bought one of those on eBay but turned out to have the wrong threads, but seems very convenient. Do you remember what size you bought?

I bought the same Dremel brand collet. All the Dremel stuff is direct fit, including the cable shaft.

Put a caliper on the mandrel... there is one size that's "off"... maybe you have a mismatch...

The fit seems "right". Not loose.

This is the issue ! I swapped the mandrel and cutting disc from my Dremel to my Milwaukee. It needed a new fiber cutting disc and the collet would NOT tighten down enough to unscrew the mounting screw. I placed it back in the Dremel, and the collet locked down sufficiently to get the job done. Then I tried to put the genuine Dremel collet in the Milwaukee and it would only go half way in.

I will have to get out my calipers and check the OD of the mandrel and the OD of both collets.

The Milwaukee accessories are absolute junk. I chucked mine and used a Dremel mandrel and collet and have had zero issues.

I initially tried the Milwaukee mandrel and collet without a cutting disc on it, and it wobbled so bad it bent the mandrel. I thought the tool was defective. Put some extra Dremel accessories on it and the thing is perfect.

The OD of the Milwaukee collet is 4.26 mm at the base. The Dremel is 4.31mm.

I broke out the Milwaukee again today. If you REALLY cranky down on the collet nut it seemed to hold the mandrel adequately.

I frequently use oversized mandrels and cutting disk. They have a certain speed where they vibrate excessively. Above or below and your fine.

Update: My Milwaukee is back as a new replacement.

It came to me with no collet, but the collet nut is, like the rest of it, new. Since the one I sent in was cracked and in pieces, I guess I get what I get.

Do these have brushes inside? Curious.
