Hello all,

I guess to start I am very impressed, really in awe, of the talent and ideas floating around this board. I have been lurking for a while now and been a little apprehensive about starting my own thread. Today's the day I guess.

I am a mech engineer that has recently relocated to SE Michigan from SE Ohio. I had just finished my first garage in 2014 before selling that property and moving. Between that, and my enjoyment of Marvel movies and anything Iron Man, my second build has been named the "Mark II".

The first build was a 24x32x8'8" garage as that was all I could fit on the lot size. Sadly I don't have any good pictures from the outside but I've thrown up a few shots of the inside from just before I sold it:

I think it came out nice considering my budget at the time. Anyway, we're discussing the next iteration.

This may take me a little time to add posts and pictures, since so far I have my newest (40'x80'x12' pole type) build pretty well documented. Please be patient as I type out the whole process, and I welcome any feedback.

Thanks, -Chad

Project Mark II (CAD)

Like many of you I started the planning phase digitally. Since sketchup is free it was the tool to use for my initial brainstorming. I have experience with other CAD tools but Sketchup is just fine for what I needed. After some iterations I arrived at this:

The goal was an office (8x16), mechanical room for air compressor, boiler, etc. (8x8), drywalled clean room for assembly and detail work (24x32), and a "dirty" room (40x56) for everything else. Two 12x9 overhead doors fit everything I plan to own, with planned high lift kits because they're awesome.

The color scale because gray is very man-cave like and the rest of the build details dictated by my hobbies. This is on track with the actual build and I think it will work out fine.

Project Mark II (Excavation)

So before I get on a flight home I think I'll leave you with some excavation pics. These were from June of 2015:

At this point several hundred yards of fill have been brought in a compacted, and a 40'x50' apron with connecting drive all capped in limestone is complete. The next step is the long wait for construction to begin.

Thanks for lookin, Chad

Nice work! I look forward to watching this, as it is quite similar to one of the options I am considering. I love Sketchup, and I am also going to be using it to plan my eventual build, once winter is in full swing and I have less projects going on.

Keep us updated as much as you can, you're off to a great start!

Also, watch the ice buildup at higher altitudes with that Mark II. [emoji41]

That's going to be an excellent shop, I really like the idea of isolated areas , probably will work well for climate control too.

Project Mark II Construction Day 1

So I'm fast forwarding a few months to October 2015. On the 5th, the construction crew showed up and had the holes ready for inspection before noon.

The trusses have also been delivered, the rest of the material to follow soon.

Onto construction day #2...

Project Mark II Construction Day 2

Construction Day #2

10/6/15 - The material was delivered. I hadn't left for work yet so I got to see this roll in (and deliver a painfully large check...):

And the rest of the day's progress:

The trusses are nearly prepped to be set:

Wicked straight walls, how they manage to do this still puts me in awe:

Project Mark II Construction Day #3

Construction Day #3

10/7/15 - Trusses all set, and it's really starting to look like something

These caught my eye, a very slick setup for running a plank along the outside walls. My father has something similar for stud walls that hooks on the top plate, but being able to very the height with the purlins is pretty cool

Northwest corner view:

All four walls get one extra skirt board that hasn't been installed yet, since I will eventually be doing a 5" concrete floor with 2" foam.

Construction Day #4

10/8/15 - Less visually drastic progress today, but the south wall has been filled in and is ready for windows. I chose to do windows on this end only for security (visible from house) and natural light into the future clean room.

10/9/15 - Windows in and East side roof metal installed. There is a vapor membrane under the metal.

Lots of small cutoffs that I stacked up to either keep for blocking or to burn. Mmmmm marshmallows

Construction Day #7

10/13/15 - Most of wainscot, some siding, man door, and all of soffit and fascia complete. These guys are moving! Today's the first day I got to see the two tone gray on silver and I really like it.

Project Mark II Construction Day #8

Construction Day #8

10/14/15 - This day was pretty much completion. There is a little work left (outside corners, siding still needing screws, etc.) that was finished on the 15th but I don't have any pictures of that.

From the front porch:

This concludes the work by the contractor, Delong Construction out of Chelsea, Mi. I highly recommend both them and Chelsea Lumber, who supplied the materials package.

Next up is garage doors.

Project Mark II Garage doors

Garage doors

10/23/15 - The (12'x9') doors were installed with temporary backets at floor height. These have a 24" high lift kit, putting them about 12" off of the ceiling. I want to add jackshaft openers sometime in the distant future.

Project Mark II Cleanup

10/27/15 - A few "temporary" shelves for material. I'm trying to keep stuff off the floor until after I get the concrete work done (in 2016). I hate double handling stuff.

Also, the toys are safely put away for the winter and the wife has her parking spot back in the attached garage. Yes she is very happy...

Project Mark II Downspouts

11/15/15 - I had an itch to make some kind of fancy brackets for the downspout drains and scrounged through my leftover stainless from an exhaust project. No weld closeups on these as I was rushing to get them done the night before but they should work. No exposed green and no issue with the weed eater. This will make a little more sense on my next update.

Project Mark II Grade Work

11/7 through 11/8/15 - The last thing I wanted to get done this year was the grade work around the building and a little more stone on the driveway.

Due to available funds and the fact that I like to play a little bit I rented a mini and a skid steer. My brother came up for the weekend to help and we got everything I wanted to get done done.

10 yds of limestone delivered:

The most worn out piece of antiquated equipment (also stuck on CAT controls ) they had:

And a brand new Bobcat :)dunno:):

Stone spread around:

And a surface drain (not a civil guy - technical term?) cut in on the south side to prevent any drainage issues. About 2' was removed at the lowest point, so now it no longer drains directly into the building. It has about 6" fall over the 40' width of the building.

And a few shots of the drains that now daylight about 14' from the building:

Project Mark II General Update

Aaaand that brings us to today. Just a fun shot from the porch since it's been snowing.

I am financially tapped out for the year, so the rest of the winter will be planning for electricity (200 Amp service), the floor, partition walls, etc.

Thanks for looking!

As an aside, apparently you have to wait 30 seconds between posts. Apparently that rule was made just to tell me I'm ridiculous for prepping all my posts in Notepad++

Project Mark II Virtual Walkthrough

I found this video I made a while ago. It was done with sketchup "footsteps" thing and a screen recorder program. Anyway, pretty neat I think.

Sorry I don't know how to embed videos (if you can in this section?):

It's been too long since I've updated this. Time to get some updates knocked out.

Earlier this year the trench was dug and a 200amp service was installed. I had a local electrician do the meter base upgrade and disconnect, and I did the rest. Future plans are for a 100amp sub panel inside the building in addition to the 200amp. A recessed panel was built that has 1.5" foam on the backside, with the outer 2x4 flush with what will be finished wall.

Next some outside lights mounted with one on an eye and the other two on a switch only, and finally 17 200W clear lights inside. It is horribly inefficient lighting but will be fine for the short term. An interesting note is that the payback period for LED vs Incandescent is less than 1 year despite a 10x increase in initial cost (@ 10 hrs/week and $.11/KwHr0). This is a comparison of E26 style bulbs only, assuming I reuse the same light bases. More likely I will be adding a bunch of T8 lights.

I've spent the last few months, off and on, doing concrete prep. 24' of the length was insulated with 2" under the floor and 1.5" on the 18" turndowns. I stapled the pex down and pressurized it for the pour with the gauge easy to watch. My hope was 40psi would make some noise if it got punctured but luckly nothing happened.

Lots of #4 rebar on the whole thing (18" centers on clean side, 36" on remainder) tied with loop ties and pure joy. Saturday (9/24) was pour day and 58 yards went down in a way that can only be described as buttery smooth. It was cut, sealed, and then the forms stripped and backfilled yesterday (9/26). No cracks yet, fingers crossed.

Finished product:

That brings us to current. Now its time to work in the building, not on it, for a while :rocker: Waiting a week to bring all my stuff in may prove difficult.

I have lots more pictures and can answer any questions. I hope you guys enjoy the pics and thanks for looking.

Famous last words. How did the grand opening go with the bikes? How is the heated floor treating you? The build looks great, I might shoot ya a pm with some questions since your somewhat local to me.

The grand opening was a lot of fun. It scratched up the sealer, but it was worth it! I should try and post a video sometime. Also I received your PM.

Great looking setup! Can't wait to see how you finish off the space and make it your own.

Keep us posted!
-Shane

Thanks! I've decided to take a break from working "on" the building but it isn't done yet. Lots of plans for the future

But, unless I read it all too quickly and missed it - What are the toys you're going to keep in there and play with? :dunno: :dunno:

Great looking set up and impressive build. Looking forward to seeing more.

Thank you!

Thanks! There are three main toys at the moment:

1979 Trans Am - I've already got it stripped down in the weeks that I've had a floor, and it's getting some love this winter and should be back on the road in June. A '98 Camaro is donating some interior parts and brakes.

I've had this car since high school and it really needed some love after all the beatings

1970 Olds Cutlass - Street-strip car, build in progress. 427 BBC and TH400 installed, manual brakes and steering, 6 pt cage, fiberglass hood, fenders, and quarters, fuel cell, etc. Shooting for 3100lb finished weight. I pulled this out of a dirt floor barn in 2009 where it was parked in 1983. The before paint and body pics are rough

1938 Allis Chalmers WC "unstyled" - I'm putting this together to pull in the 3mph pro stock classes (NATPA DIV II from memory). It has some things done to it that are pretty unique I think.

And the rest of my junk got moved in too. Since I have plenty of space for now the big toys were just rolled in at an angle which I thought looked cool.

I left the far end (wall with windows) open so I can start on the interior walls, insulation, etc. once I feel motivated.

And Pics:
