Found this 1/2" drive on CL for $15 and thought it was worth taking a chance.

Externally it cleaned up nicely, mostly covered in old WD-40 (the previous owner told me he sprayed it good years ago to keep it from rusting) and old grease. P.O. told me he used it as a ratchet because it has a long handle. Everything works but according to the shop calibration tools it is about 30% out of spec across the entire range. Next I'll take it apart to check for corrosion and more old grease; I figure it can't hurt to clean & inspect the innards, then re calibrate.

What is the approximate age, or how do I find a date code?
1. It is graduated from 10-150 FOOT POUNDS (not lb-ft as seen on many current wrenches), and there is no metric scale.
2. Next to PROTO is a fraction 2/73, is that a manufacturing date?

I disassembled it and inside found old crud and some light surface rust that cleaned up with steel wool moistened with CorrosionX. Parts looked good...here it is undressed before reassembly.

Now its back together. Internals got a light coating of Permatex anti-seize and tomorrow its back to the calibration station to dial it in. 20181125_205437.jpeg

Today after work I ran the old wrench through our shop's calibration protocol on our DIY system. The yellow vertical rod is set one foot from the pivot, resting on a certified scale (zeroed after attaching the wrench).

[FYI...I moved the fire extinguisher to the floor because it made a busy background look worse...you can just see the red hook behind the yellow horizontal rod.]

I adjusted the calibration ring loosely a few days ago and found I had set it pretty close, close enough for the results as seen on my correction card below (which I'll keep with home shop papers).

Not bad for a $15 investment.

I’ve got a 6016-4 and it too has the fraction “2/73”. If that’s the DoM then this is quite a coincidence.

I thought you might enjoy seeing this photo of a technician from the Proto Los Angeles plant (dated to 1962) working the "Torque wrench cycle machine".
