Grr... Grainger is experiencing "technical difficulties"

Those Big Dawgs are damn nice... I especially like the long-handled 1/2" Proto black one I have.

I have at least one of each ratchet on clearance. I will say that the Big Dawg prices are outstanding, the rest not so much. Ebay has much better deals on the others. I bought most of mine through a distributor closing up shop. They too had much better prices than Grainger sale (except for the Big Dawgs  ).

How good are the Big Dawg ratchets, really? Is there a reason they are discontinued, or did that never happen? Anyway, that is some pretty low prices on the Big Dawgs.

I really like mine.. I dunno why they don't have more of a following...

They are just about the ultimate sleeper ratchet.

I concur completely. Nothing at all wrong with the Big Dawgs or any Proto ratchet for that matter. They are a strong industrial brand. Simply put, they are just not as refined and innovative as the Snap-ons. But the Proto's will take a hefty beating and still be there for the next round. :)

If I hadn't spent $50 today on a brake booster I'd be picking up one short ratchet, one of those indexable/flex head ratchets and another 10 buck one. But I'll control myself.

How much is their shipping? In case I lose my resistance.

I didn't see that many sale prices. *confused*

I know that 1/4" Big Dawgs are super low prices, but the locations near me don't have any. =( I was able to have someone pick up one for me at their Grainger, but not the long handled versions.

Stupid Grainger won't ship to me. They said that it isn't enough that I am affiliated with where I work - they need an account number since there have been too many instances of double billing. People bought products with credit cards, copy of invoice sent to billing, and then it gets paid again.

It just looks like the Big Dawg design was discontinued to be replaced by the not-as-nice-looking or feeling versions with much coarser teeth.

I don't see much special there, at least in the 1/2". I got each of my 72 tooth Snap-On ratchets new with shipping for less than what they're asking for the Proto's.

Most excellent. Elroy picked up one of the 1/4" Proto ratchets back in the spring for like $15.00. I "seas" they are still listed, now for $9 and it makes Elroy "sick"

None the less, Elroy has an account with the "WW". They will transfer ANYTHING into the local branch for free. Come Monday, guess where Elroy will be placing an order?

Elroy's THANKS to the "Tree" guy for making this post.

I'm a complete newb to Proto ratchets. What are some of the good models in the clearance?

Any of the Big Dawgs are good. The standard pear-heads have been around forever. They are strong, but very coarse. I have one, but rarely use it because it only has about 24 teeth...

Which are the Big Dawgs?

I have an order in for a 4749P, 5249PG, and 5250P. Did I do ok?

ETA: Just got word back from Grainger. Out of all three.

If Elroy sees a long-handled Big Dawg by any chance, would he be willing to pick up an extra one?

Your request is just a little too general. Elroy approached his local branch first thing this morning with a laundry list of part numbers

1UL47 Sold out company wide

1UL46 Sold out company wide

1UL43 Sold out company wide

3UE10 One piece available some where in Florida. They would NOT ship to Louisville.

3UB96 Bingo, (3) Pieces in Louisville stock @ $20.01 each. Proto number 5449 PG. Elroy purchased (1) piece. If you want one of the other two in stock, you better get on the stick.

There might be other part numbers available but you have to do your own research. Elroy needs the Grainger number, NOT the Proto number. Also note the picture in the Grainger web site does NOT match the actual tool.

Great deal! You will like those ratchets. Not quite as smooth as the Snap On 80 series, but definitely some of teh nicer ratchet that I've used.

I figured if you were at a Grainger and just happened to come across one...

Still, I'm surprised that they still had anything left anywhere.

I've been trying to get a 3UE15 for a while (Proto 4749PG 1/4" long), and a 3UE10 (3/8 long).

Elroy did not want to help out Stuey, that is wrenchr's observation:wtf:

NOT TRUE! The problem is two fold. First off, the drive size Stuey wanted was NOT specified in his request. Combine that with the fact the Grainger site pictures did NOT match the product and it was confusing to say the least.

Combine this with the depleted stock in the pipe line and Elroy had nothing but troubles.

You need to cut Elroy some slack.

lol, I was only half serious/testing the waters, otherwise I would have mentioned specifics.

If Elroy didn't want to help out, he could/would have just said that they didn't have any. Like, when a hobo on the street or train asks for a dollar and someone doesn't want to give, they say, sorry don't got. Rarely does anyone open up their wallet, peer around, and then say sorry don't got, unless they were prepared to give something.

Although in college I did do that once or twice to give a friend or acquaintance the appearance that I wanted to help them out but couldn't.

I think that this case is more analagous to that of the hobo. Me = the hobo, Elroy = the guy who opens wallet willing to give but couldn't find anything there. Although, technically I'm a hobo that would have liked 5 singles for a $5, or four $5s for a $20, or four quarters for a $1.

Hmm, next analogy someone else is going to have to be the hobo.

Thank you Mr. Elroy anyways, and thank you Mr. Wrenchr for defending me? Come to think of it. Mr. Wrenchr, this is all YOUR fault. Offering and selling your spare 3/8 Big Dawg got me hooked. =P (Thanks again)

Mine came on the brown truck today, I wasn't able to get the super deals but it was enough to motivate me to get a 3/8" flex-head and a big 1/2" plastic handle.

Ordered over the weekend, account was created and approved Monday, ratchets arrived Tuesday. Their prices aren't always cheap, bur I've always found Grainger, McMaster, and Uline to be on-the-ball with shipping.

For kicks I spent a couple hours on the clearance items and talked myself into a lot of Knipex products, filling the basket, getting through to checkout, only to find them out of stock...really can't stand a website that does that to you!

Peace,
J

I was happy to get them at that price. I already have one 3/8 Big Dawg and like it a lot. Pretty smooth and heavy enough to use as a club should the need arise.

My wife came home tonight from our gym and said to me "Grainger called this afternoon to confirm our shipping address. You have some wrenches coming?" I said "No, ratchets." Wife says "Oh OK. Is spaghetti ok for dinner?" I have a good wife.

A complete set of Proto ratchets all purchased from Grainger at close out prices. With sales tax, Elroy has $45.70 total in all three tools. Thanks to the board for posting these close out items. Hope to return the favor.

My 3UE10, 3/8 got to the gym Friday. I got back into town today and picked it up. I didn't realize it had the red handle till I opened it. Mighty pleased for $8 and some change. The other long handle ratchet should be here tomorrow or tuesday.
