When did they even start selling tools? I just looked at their website and couldn't believe it! Proto, Klein, Blackhawk, and so on! Looks like I'm stopping by Staples today to see if they sell tools in store or just online.

Lots of retailers offer stuff online That they don't sell in stores. Walmart sells proto online too.

A bunch of online retailers sell stuff that they would never offer in the store. They really are not the ones selling it they are just basically using their website as a catalog and if you order something it gets drop shipped from another supplier and Staples just gets some $ from it. You can buy all kinds of stuff from the newegg.com marketplace that doesn't have anything to do with computers as well.

Staples is partly a business supply store, you place a big order every month for TP, printer paper, ink, etc. Now there are tools with it.

They are trying to compete with Grainger and the like. You can now order your paper, ink, and sticky notes for the office, and grab a ratchet, bucket, and mop for the maintenance guy all at once.

This should probably go under hot deals, but I'll post it in General Tool Discussion as to reach a wider audience that might be able to make decent use of it in the future.

As the OP noted, he received search results while looking for Proto tools from Staples. I found the same and I had recently received a $40 off a $90 order by phone or online from Staples.com. Well, $40 off $90 is almost a 45% discount so I started looking through the staples website to see what might be a good deal. Without the coupon, just about every tool I could find could be found elsewhere for less money. Plus, the selection for the brands I could find was incomplete at best. Not that many Proto tools, an ok selection of Klein stuff, Bondhus and Eklind tools among others. I ended up ordered the one Facom tool that came up on the search, An adjustable pin spanner wrench for $73 I filled out the rest of the order with some Bondhus hex keys for a total of $90 and change. With the coupon it was just over $50 plus tax and included free shipping.

Of course, the secret to getting maximum value of these coupons is to buy just the minimum amount to get the coupon value applied. The 40 off 90 coupon was one of the most generous Staples coupons I have seen in recent years but then again, I haven't been buying much from Staples lately and maybe that's why it was sent to me. (By the way, it was a one-time use coupon with a customer specific 16 digit number)

A quick search on the staples website showed that they do have a variety of things useful to tool users, like various cleaners and nitrile gloves. I did not really check to see if the prices were competitive though.

Happy hunting.

All this just seems weird to me...

Whatever happened to service after the sale?

If you think you might need that sort of thing, don't buy hand tools online from an office supply store, though Proto might let you take care of service at what ever local to you industrial supply house that carries Proto tools. :dunno:

Do you have the coupon for Staples? thats cool that it was valid for everything offered on the website.
I think Sears.com has exclusions to all their coupons so you can only get items marked "Sold by Sears" all the other Proto SK stuff in the marketplace are excluded.

The 40 off 90 coupon I received was a one-time use coupon of 16 digits. Coupons that can be used by different accounts only have, I believe, 6 digits. I do believe there were exclusions on the coupons, like tech items (computer, printer, camera, etc...). Of course, tools are tech items to Garage Journal folks.

Staples regularly sends out smaller value coupons like 15-20% off but, as I stated in my earlier post, the $40 off $90 coupon was a rare one to me.

Oh, if you have a cash back account at a site like Fatwallet.com, you can get 2.5% back on Staples orders, as well as differing amounts at Advance Auto, Sears and a bunch of other places.

Long gone. As is customer loyalty, and for that matter common courtesy. Showcasing anyone? I worked retail for years, and the horror stories I can tell. Dressing rooms are apparently restrooms, and it happened often enough we switched to carpet tiles. This was at a high end clothing store, not Wally World.

In truth I really don't care as long as I can get what I need, I'd prefer to be left alone when I shop.

Just an FYI, become a rewards members. It doesn't cost anything, and you can turn in old ink cartridges for $2 per cartridge in rewards. My office is a premier member, and we can turn in 20 a month (I do). Thats $40 a month. You can use a at least 3 months rewards all at once, so that's $120 of free store credit just for recycling ink cartridges.

That's not a bad deal at all, particularly if you can get a bunch of freebies from an office full of people. I'll bet you could talk to a goodwill or other thrift store and get all of the dead cartridges that ride in on their donated printers. Even if you can only get $20 a month, you're talking $60 every three months to spend on those tools staples sells.

"How can I earn Staples Rewards for each ink cartridge I recycle?

You can recycle ANY ink or toner cartridges, up to 10 per calendar month per customer and receive $2 back in Staples Rewards per cartridge. Limit one Staples Rewards account per address. We will recycle additional cartridges but Rewards will only be issued for 10 per calendar month per customer. Your Ink Recycling Reward will arrive each month, separately from your other benefits."

I'm looking to purchase several proto sockets but staples doesn't list them. Does anyone know a good reliable website that sell the full Proto line at a fair price. Looking to purchase j52203 plus the j5024h as well as j52215. Any and all help is appreciated.

I've read several bad reviews on toolup. With many of the same complaint so I was looking for another retailer.
