I find these adjustable hook spanners to be useful tools. I have a couple of smaller sizes (other brands), but this C474 is the largest; with a range of 2"-4-3/4". I'm guessing the (R) stands for Recent... as in, not terribly old. ;) I think the little screwdriver I found might be the smallest PROTO one I have. Tom

I have a snappy version of that spanner at work. Comes in handy! That little proto is awesome.

Cool stuff! I haven’t ever seen a Proto spanner like that. I believe they started using the (R) on tools in the mid 60’s. That screwdriver is a good one

Picked up this 12" Plombaloy on eBay recently. Has a phillips screw holding the worm gear in, will find a new set screw or modify the phillips.

Edit: Oops thought I put this on the Plomb thread.

Here's some recent acquisitions that will be wall art in my new garage. Will fill them with Proto MFD era tools:

I saw two of these boards for sale in the Toledo Ohio area. The first was a combination wrench board a little different the one you show , the other one was for all the different pliers. The guy has $75 on each one, seems kind of high . They are in an antique mall, never saw the guy to see if he would deal on them. I thought I'd post this in case someone wanted them.

I don't know how old this is. Probably not very. I'll remove it if it's too new.
But it's the only proto I own I think, and it's quite impressive!

Not sure why anyone needed a 2 3/16 spanner, especially in the UK.

You need really big nuts to use it :)
I guess so!

I was given it, and I'm not one to turn down free tools!

I'll hang it back on the wall. You never know, one day I might need it. Probably when I can't find all the hammers 😂

That wrench is designed to fit a standard SAE (American) 1-1/2" diameter hex head bolt or nut. Nice wrench!

I found a chart that tells me a 1 3/8 diameter bolt has a 2 3/16 AF head.
1.5" diameter bolt is down as having a 2 3/8 head.

All way bigger than I'll ever encounter!
Would you even get fixings that big on big lorries or are we more into heavy plant, maybe large farm machinery?
Trains?
I don't know, never seen a bolt that big in situ.

The chart you saw is for U.S. Standard bolts and nuts. SAE means Society of Automotive Engineers, and they set the standards for automobile fasteners. The SAE standard has become pretty much the most common. U.S. Standard is still used for some structural steel (buildings) products.

That makes sense. They are not standards I know much about.

Here is a chart that shows more wrench sizes. The one I used is in the back of the Plomb 19R catalog, and has served me well over the years.
wrench-sizes-American-2.jpg

A note on the above chart: It appears to be fairly old, and in modern times SAE 7/16 nuts are 11/16 across the flats, not 5/8. The bolt heads are still 5/8. Also, all modern 3/4 fasteners are 1-1/8 across the flats.

Thank you, always good to learn.
If this spanner has done nothing else for me, it's led to me learning some new info.

Nice tool box OTG! A few years back BMW pointed out one nearly as nice as this in my area. I regretably passed and then BMW ended up buying it. Every time I see it i wish I had jumped on it !

ACK... that is a good price! You should get them. The value on these boards varies greatly based on subject matter, condition and what logo/era they are from... If they were local I would be all over them!

Ok, here is a recently acquired trade from Jabberwoki. I was super stoked to get a pliers board because I need a space to display pliers. However turns out , I need more pliers :) If anyone has these or other pliers let me know! (pliers i need are top row- 201, 239, 240, 241....bottom row 278-276)

I got the board from Jabberwoki and it was pretty dirty. I cleaned it up and cleared it with flat spar varnish just to prevent more paint loss. I only do this to the boards that are more weathered. I am glad all the pegs are intact and board isnt painted or damaged for the most part
