My dad stumbled across this, he had forgotten he owned. He said he bought it new at least 40 years ago, and looks like he basically just stuck it in a drawer and never used it.

Looks very similar to a Buck pocket knife, handle and blade shape similar. However the handle is slightly thinner than the Buck version, and has a larger edge chamfer.

It came with an unmarked brown leather sheath, not pictured.

My dad and I went to the Cleveland international motorcycle show maybe 5 years back. It is always in January.

On the way home we randomly dropped in at a small local sporting goods chain called Fin Feather & Fur Outfitters. They had the large Buck lock backs on sale 50% off, from 60 to 30. Dad and I each bought one. I should have put his in the pic.

Well I was wrong about the sheath. Judging by the Stanley and Proto logos, it could be like 35 years old at most. So my apologies it isn't vintage.

Here are some pics with a Buck for comparison. They look similar but there are minor differences.

JEEP: I really need to buy some evaporust. do you buy in 5 gallon or just a gallon at a time?

ALL: I picked these leather tool wraps up from another member a few years ago and not sure if these are vintage, but I think they are pretty cool. also since you vintage guys know how to treat old leather should I buy some conditioner and NEET or something like that comes to mind?

I might end up putting my PLVMB wrenches in these or since i might own the actual Proto sets anybody want to say which ones go in these?

thanks all

Drives,
I’ve been picking up individual gallons at O’Reillys. Shiftless has a five gallon container for dipping his vises. It does lose effectiveness after a lot of use. I’ve been replacing mine annually.

Here are my Proto and Plomb finds at an estate sale yesterday. The dual marked DBE wrench is my second dual marked wrench in the last two weeks. The older looking Proto tools are LA.

Some Proto tidbits from a basement cleanout over my lunch hour at work. Proto Gasket Scraper, P & C Screwdriver, a pair of 248 & 248N Slip groove pliers, and a chisel. My quick-and-lazy question is wondering if the nylon inserts on the 248N are readily sourced to facilitate replacement. Also, are these pliers (both pair) a bit wonky for a dedicated following?

I like them too. After the Proto LA series I kind of lose interest. Don’t get me wrong, they are great quality tools, just not very interesting. What size sockets do you need for the set? I keep finding them but they are just sitting around.

Honestly, I need a couple of sockets for this, but I enjoy the hunt and they aren't too uncommon. Proto LA is highest on my list, but anything with the flying lady is all good in my book.

The markings on this 4" J.P. Danielson made adjustable crescent type wrench are so lightly struck and it had so much rust on it I couldn't tell if it was Plomb or Proto at the flea market this morning. I was hoping for Plomb, but Proto LA ain't bad. Can't make out the date code.

An old war horse. I'm not much into Proto but it's hard to pass by a two dollar ratchet.

I think I posted this previously here, but in the absence of an answer, I'll lob it up in the air again..... I have these unusual Proto 248-N Slip groove type pliers with dedicated nylon inserts to soften their bite. I'm curious if anyone might know an old resource to locate replacement inserts for these or if fabricating a new pair is the only option. I'm a big path of least resistance guy, and if the pads are out there and cheap, I'm not inclined to create a project where there doesn't need to be one.

Thanks!!

I picked up a flying lady socket rail recently for my 1/2” proto LA sockets. I guess I need more than I thought. I’ve got 5416-5434 minus all the /32” ers. Time to get busy.

Not my oldest set, but practically unused. My Grandfathers, I’ve had it at least 35 years...

I found a complete Fleet 3/8” drive set at a Walnut Creek, CA estate sale yesterday. The blow molded plastic is beginning to crack a little but most of the tools look almost unused. The first picture is as found and the last is the set cleaned up.

I have quite a few of Canadian made Proto and Proto-Challenger. I purchaced most of them back when I was an apprentice working in a machine shop. Good thing I got the company price. I also have alot of USA made Proto. I think they quit making them in Canada in the mid eighties. Missing a few of the metric wrenches but complete wrench sets and sockets. Ratchets from ¼" to ¾". Side cutters, end cutters, hammers, adjustable wrenches, torx drivers, breaker bars, speed wrenches and even allen wrenches. I don't have many pictures yet but here are a few.

Got what i consider to be lucky and made me very happy. I'm still pretty sore about a fair condition 9997(same era) that was stolen 3 years ago. First flying lady ive seen since I bough the 9997.

It will be used to hold my "user" set of 3/8" ad 1/2" drive Proto/PL∇MB tools.

These were given to me awhile ago, and I absolutely love them. Missing/need the 10mm, also have to gigure out how to somehow find/buy the rest of the sae set. While I do love a good chrome wrench, the finish on these feels great in the hand.
