I have a couple that are basic colors like Grey and a brown/copper color. I also have some that are bright red, orange, blue, green, etc, but those are for the kids to have fun picking rings for me to wear.
Cool that you let the kids pick them out. I like that idea.

Strange things happen on occasion. Like a finger being torn off in a lathe accident due to a ring. I've been married 35 years and have never worn a wedding band for that purpose. It was something that I explained when we bought them and she has been cool with it. On occasion I will wear it. But not daily

Had an old school machinist working for me and he and his wife had their "rings" tattooed onto their fingers long ago.

My problem is that my ring is too tight to take off easily (had it resized twice already) and that I'm forgetful and keep losing it when I do take it off.

I need to get a silicone ring.

Not into posting gross pics, but guys, that little ring can get you HURT... Washing the camper today, Slipped coming off the ladder on the back , ring got caught on one of the steps as I fell.. Not a pretty site... be safe, carry on..
One of my goals in life is to be buried with ten fingers and ten toes,I’ve had some really close calls but so far so good. I have several friends who are not so fortunate.

I was told I should have a medical bracelet. I was surprised to learn that they all seem to be conductive. I've avoided jewellery my whole life. I do not plan on starting now. I still do all the stuff I did before. Having a jewelry issue isn't going to help anything.

Does anybody have any medical alert recommendations? I have a Samsung4 watch that I could put something on the band. Most of what I have seen did not have enough room for information. Not even blood type. One of thr meds I'm on makes blood typing unreliable.

Back in the mid '70s a guy I kneww shorted a long handle box end wrench across the terminals of the 12v auto battery has working on. The gold ring he was wearing turned nearly red hot in seconds (I wasn't there tho). He came very close to losing the finger.

You could try https://www.roadid.com/ - I use them for cycling. There isn't much room for contact info, but you get assigned an ID and a first responder can lookup all your medical and emergency contact info. It's cheap enough (looks like $10 a year now). Not great for an urgent emergency (ala blood type) but generally pretty good.

That was the first place I looked at. Seemed very lacking in important information - such as blood type.

Seems like it would work, and did you follow what I was saying re: online account (essentially unlimited info)?

Tungsten carbide rings (as well as ceramic) are very brittle. The proper removal method is to grasp them with Vise Grip pliers and crush until they break. It is VERY important to use Vise Grip type pliers and not something like Channellocks, because Vise Grips will only close a small amount, and will stop before causing more damage, whereas other pliers may end up crushing your finger.

Rotary ring cutters are effective on most other metallic rings, except titanium or stainless. I would strongly suggest not wearing those metals as rings.
I was told that pure titanium was fine, it's the alloyed stuff ("aerospace grade") you need to avoid.

Unalloyed Ti is relatively soft.

My brother and I discussed this one evening.
I worked around Switchgear and BIG Generators at Medium Voltages which means I never liked any kind of metal on me.
He worked around Big Engines on Off-Shore Rigs and stuff like that. He has always worn his Ring.

Do you have a smart phone? Start there.
Write on your driver's license.
If it's serious enough, get a tattoo.

I wondered about a tattoo. Do they really pay any attention to a tattoo?

I had an emt tell me they do not mess with phones or watches.

For right now, I just wear the band they put on me at appointments

Unless the tat is where you are injured/being treated, I doubt it

And phones are almost always locked. An emt wouldn't be able to do anything with one except.maybr call 911,which isn't particularly useful

Tat would have to be where they'd look for a bracelet. Dunno if it would be seen, but I'm just trying to think outside the box. If it looked uncannily like a medical bracelet, that might help.

I said "smart" phone for a reason.
Tap the power button on ANY iPhone 5 times quickly, and it brings up the emergency screen. From there, you can make an emergency call, or bring up the "medical ID" that's setup by the owner. The Health app allows you to put whatever you want available on the locked phone. Blood type, medical conditions, emergency contacts, etc. I'm an iPhone owner, and I learned that trick from an EMT who was trained on it. I know that Androids allow you to put custom content on the lock screen as well.

no ring. Too easy to touch electric with it or get it caught. I kept it in a safe place when working on things.

I stopped wearing a ring mostly but if I do it is a silicone ring. I got a blister once on my ring finger trying to start a weed eater that was giving me issues and that was the most painful ring removal I have experienced. I swore off rings at that point.

My grandfather was missing most of his ring, he was in the army and jumped out the back of a truck, caught his wedding ring on the side of the truck and left the top two bones of the finger behind.

I can't imagine how much it must have hurt, although by the time I knew him it was just a funny story, how the church organist was missing a finger.

For my own part, not only do I have my own personal emergency contacts there, I also keep a handful of local emergency numbers there for quicker recall than searching through contacts. The local fire department, EMS and police precinct for example.

As for conductivity, there are really cheap custom silicone bands available if one line is enough of a message. This is the first thing that popped up when I searched:

For the most part- I don’t wear my rings (like that big one to the left) other than “family outings” or “date night”.
I saw the effects of wearing a wedding ring in the trades at a young age. One of my grandfather’s best friends had a half ring finger. I also knew two others in the construction industry that had half ring fingers- before I ended up in the residential construction industry.

So, I had a good understanding of ring (marriage) danger long before I actually “conceded”.

While married to my first wife I was helping my father in law build a house, the lumber delivery came in stacked in the wrong order. While restacking it to get to the pressure treated sills he was bit by a tiny red spider on his ring finger. By the time he got home that night it had swollen to the point he had to cut his wedding ring off or lose the finger. I always thought he did it on purpose to destroy the ring....

I do wear my gold ring while working on stuff- but I am well aware of degloving and the electrical hazards (heat too- I got some welding slag stuck to the ring and it got real hot real quick) - I actually discussed with a jeweler- He told me they can cut a "mechanics score" on the underside- (basically a line that is precut so if you catch it on anything it will just break the ring off w/o damaging the finger) He told me he can "Weld" the ring back together and re-score so you have no worries if it ever does break-

Ouch, that sounds painful! A while back, I caught my ring on some gear while hiking, and it was no fun at all. After that, I looked for something tougher but still with character—came across some unique mens wedding bands that stood out without being bulky. Definitely good to have something that won’t catch easily but still feels personal.

I had a somewhat serious motorcycle crash in 2018. Almost lost my pinky and ring finger on my left hand from sliding along the pavement with my hand pinned between the grip and road surface.

My hand swelled up so much that my wedding ring was cutting of my circulation. In retrospect I think the size of the ring (not just a band) acted as a cantilever in snapping my finger bone.

Was out in the desert with no working phone service so it was about 14 hours before I got to the ER. Luckily I have nerves of steel and am reasonably (or at least was in the past) trained in first aid and emergency response. Rider behind me crashed also from the same issue.

Hospital had no idea how to cut it off even though they found the right tool. I had had enough by that point (no pain meds were given) and said "give me the ******* cutter" as I grabbed it and cut off my own ring. Relief!

First doc was going to remove the fingers as unsalvageable. Bones were munched up pretty good. I (luckily) had the wherewithal to seek a second opinion. Second guy was like "I've fixed worse than this on the battlefield in Kosovo. We'll get it" then explained his approach in very mechanical engineer-y terms I can appreciate. He did such a good job I can still play guitar.

Got the ring fixed eventually and still wear it daily. It has HIGH sentimental value, hopefully obviously.

Lessons learned / behavior modifications:
  • I no longer wear the ring under my riding gloves. I keep it on a carabiner (too make it large enough to not lose or forget) in my riding jacket pocket when I ride.
  • I no longer wear the ring in my workshop. I made a hook near the coffee/stereo/notebook area to hang it on when I come in and pick it up when I leave
Pics for your enjoyment.

Jason

anyone here switch to a silicone band lately? I’ve been thinking about getting one for shop work but not sure which brand actually holds up without tearing after a few months. Curious what kind of wear or issues others have run into over time with them.

It's all I wear, with the exception of us going out anywhere together

One I'm wearing is pushing +2 years and I'm often working with metal (CNC plasma, welding)

No issues, plus they're cheap to replace

Wife and I wore silicone ones for a year or two. We never found any that we really liked the look of, and we just stopped wearing them, realizing that we didn't care if anyone else knows that we're married. We know, and that's enough.

Mine nearly pulled my finger off a long time ago. Then I lost it in the sea... never replaced it. Wife doesn't mind and it's been 30 years

We did that in 2019. Wife's rings couldn't take resizing again after her surgery and I'd lost my original years before, months after our wedding when it fell off in the ocean. I'd been wearing tungsten carbide for a while after that.

I just wear cheap ones and consider them a consumable item nowadays.

I had a Qalo ring when they first came out. Wore it for a few years until I lost it. The next ring was a different, less expensive brand that had a lifetime warranty. A good idea, provided the company actually stays in business. I went to the website to file a claim when it started to tear only to find that the site was shut down and the domain was for sale. I've been wearing an even cheaper, no-name one from Amazon for the last 8 months. It's just as good, if not better quality than the lifetime warranty one I had before.

This is the brand I'm currently wearing.

Even if it tears tomorrow, I've still got 4+ years worth of rings in a bag (provided I don't lose them) that I can wear - not bad for $10.

My father missed a rung while getting off a Cat no 12 motor grader and it peeled the skin back to the middle of his finger.

It was one of several times before I legally old enough to drive that I had to drive him to the emergency room and they were able to sew the skin up and you can hardly tell.

I have been married 24 years now as of a few weeks ago and never worn my wedding ring more than a few months total on vacations. Need to loose some weight as it didn't fit last year.

SS band. If I’m working in the shop it is off. Feels weird to not have it usually. Feels weireder to have it on in the shop. Goes in the watch pocket in my jeans.

One of the University of Tennessee presidents/vice presidents was missing his ring finger on his left hand from a hay wagon accident in High School. So it happens a lot to all different groups trying to work with jewelry getting in dangerous locations.

Having gone thru a few (from no-name Amazon cheapies all the way up), my current option is GrooveLife. They supposedly have a lifetime warranty (I have not had to use it yet, but someone else said they were very easy to work with for a different product of theirs). I have two different ones, which both appear to be wood-grained. Fairly realistic from 18"+ away, right up close you can see the plastic-ness of the image. Decent price as well.

I would stay away from Enso, especially any of their "themed" rings. Ordered one, was basically junk after a month for the coloring they used on the "imprints". Bled all over the contrasting color. Was basically told to pound sand after the first swap (second did the same almost as fast). They told me it wasn't designed for daily wear...?!
