Punch and Chisel Set

Looking into getting a punch and chisel set. What do you guys think of the quality of craftsman punch and chisels? How about wilde?

I like Mayhew. Haven't tried Wilde, but they're probably real good too.

the craftsman ones I have are pretty decent. Not as good as the tool truck ones but pretty close and excelent bang for buck compaired to them. I would buy them as a big set if I needed them.

Yes, BIG SET. I have pieced them together from yard sales/swap meets etc...all namebrand, but it always seemed as if I didn't have just the right one. I have them all now, but if I could do it over, I think I would spring for a new set, with all the pieces that weren't abused by the PO. Lots of mine I had to give some love with a grinder etc. I think I have more time into the hunt on these than it was worth-considering I needed them so many times but had to improvise, adapt, overcome.

And get a chisel holder too. You'll hardly ever use it, but when you need it, it's awesome. We use it on old truck teardowns with bigger chisels when you're really swinging that singlejack.

I have Wilde myself, check Epsteins for the best price. You'll save a bunch over Mayhew. I also recently picked up a Proto punch/chisel holder on Ebay from some guy selling a bunch, $7.50 shipped.

I have the chrome plated Craftsman punch and chisel set ( most of it) and I'd like to get a couple of additional sizes, but all I've seen available for years has been the black oxide coated pieces. Does anyone still produce the plated ones?

I wanna say Craftsman are rebrabded Wilde and arn't Snap On rebrabded Mayhew?

Craftsman are Western Forge; Snapon are oem Mayhew, I have both. The mahew have superior anti mushrooming shapes and the heat treatment seems to be superior, they don't deform as easily as the Craftsman.

I have a few pcs but have never had a full set. A local USA mfr nearby was recently reopened after going under. I have a few of their punches and they are great stuff. I plan to buy a more complete set from them soon. I thought it was worth mentioning... maybe check them out? Enderes Tools

if i were to buy a new set to replace my craftsmans, id buy a mayhew set, i really like there chisels.

i have two of em, one was a freebie i found outside work, the other i bought at a local hardware store. great tools,i also have there prybars, great bars.

I have a mix of Craftsman and Dasco (and a couple Mayhew brass drifts). They're all USA made and have never given me any problems. I agree with the post above that says to get that Craftsman punch/chisel holder. I actually use mine a lot since I'm sick of smashing my hand with my hammer.

I have probably two drawers full of every kind of punch/chisels known to man. Bought a couple of old tool boxes and they were cramed full of them.

Have a big SK set and have no complaints. I don't know if SK makes their own or rebadge, either way good tools.

From what I hear, they are open again. Story is here. I've read elsewhere that the new owner, a past Enderes customer, is trying to hire past employees first to keep quality levels high.

Seem to be new products on the webpage. I've ordered from them directly before, great stuff.

If you plan on using them hard I would get a set from Sears - you can easily swap them out whenever needed. I've done this a couple times already. To me, they seem to be a consumable item. Also for general work I tend to use punches a lot more than chisels.

I picked up the 16 pc set there, and added on the 6 pc long punch set as well as the roll pin punch set. Also I find I use the long punches the most.

My vote would be for Proto/MAC. Best punches/chisels I have used to date. I use pin punches a lot as we have a ton of roll pins at work.

MAC and Proto would be the same as they are both made by Stanley. I have a MAC at work and a full set of Proto at home. Absolute best punches/chisels I have ever used.

Hmm. I'd avoid the craftsmen myself... poor customer service and quality. Mayhew is what I use at work and that seems to be the standard. My boss did just pick up a proto chisel and proto punch and I really like using these but I'm not sure if they are sold for consumer use or just wholesale. I'm also not entirely sure if they have a large set.

Its been Rumored that Mayhew makes the Snap On Punches/Chisels, But Snap On are Made of S2 steel and i believe to get that Option via Mayhew you have to step into the "150 Line" of which I own a complete set of Punches and Chisels. The Base Mayhew Line is Not the Same as Snap On...

I do mostly automotive stuff in the garage. Have a few random punches and chisels and a HF set. HF stuff isn't holding up so well.

If you want the best go with snap-on or mayhew 150. If you want usable but wont last forever but easy warrenty go with craftsman. Mayhew pro's are ok about par with craftsman. Dasco about the same.

I bought a Craftsman black oxide set in the late 1980's.
They're ok. But they're soft.
I have a handful of Snap-On, Mac, Proto, even a Klein, all bought at garage sales.
They're a full step up from the CMs.
But like Mohawk Dave, I should've just sprung for a full set of Snap-On or Proto in the first place, instead of so many trips to the grinder.

I have a set of Craftsman and they have held up fine for the last several years. The local Tru Valu sells Enderes so I have a lot of those as well and they have been excellent.

I have mostly craftsman, they work most of the time.......I have a couple smaller snap on ones that were needed for certain things. They have broke.......I have some bigger proto punches that have stood up to some serious beatdowns. 8 lbs slege beatings......they are tapered alignment punches. I don't know what size.....
But they are are now used for pushing broken studs thru the hub. So they are not real heavy duty size wise.......but I got them at a garage sale many years ago. They have taken more abuse than I thought a punch could. I am very impressed with proto punches.

I have the Wilde set listed about and it is very solid for the money. Proto pin punches are nice as well.

That Proto set looks nice. I'm just mildly curious as to why you chose the Proto's over the other recommendations (other than eBay shipping issues). I have Proto screwdrivers, wrenches, and socket sets (with multiple ratchets). Good quality tools.

The proto punches look to be great. I use all sorts of punches all the time as a hobbyist but hardly ever chisels. What do you guys use chisels for?

Few reasons. First, I wanted one large set that had pretty much all I needed. The 26 piece Proto set had this. From there, I was looking for top quality. The Mayhew 150 series seems to be their best, but I could only find it in a smaller set that I would have had to supplement. Finally, the folks who posted here are very fond of their Proto stuff and I don't have any Proto tools, so figured this was a good time to start.
