Got tired of the cheap direct drive unit I had (IE: too loud) and have been gathering up parts to assemble a "better" one.

Compressor is a 2 cyl, v pump. Single stage. Calls for 2 hp. Just like the ones you can buy at Harbour freight.

Tank is the old one, which is about a 26 gallon vertical. About all I really have room for and my use is "light". Just home garage type stuff. Air tools, impact, etc. The pump is rated for enough cfm@psi for my modest uses. I don't use a lot of air hogs. Plasma is about the worst draw and that used to work fine on the old, lower cfm rated, direct drive pump.

I reused the pressure switch/unloader assembly (which I think is my issue, more to follow).

Motor is a 3hp. Single phase, 220, 15 amp. It's a Vevor, the "compressor rated" one. Runs fine no load. Smooth and quiet. Turns over smoothly by hand without scratching or other noise.

It's on a dedicated 15 Amp 220 service. I just used a dryer plug and dryer cord (only using line 1 and line 2). Dryer receptacle was a choice of convenience as it was easiest to find locally. Qualified electrician installed the receptacle. He was shown the motor and it's requirements and asked to size appropriately. It's about 2 feet from the main panel and on it's own breakers (obviously).

Wire from the pressure switch to the motor "in" is at least the same size as the wiring inside the motor at the connections.

Pulley's are calculated to run a shade over 1100 rpm, pump is rated for 1300 rpm max.

Everything seems like it should work. But when I turn it on, sometimes the motor will rapidly cycle. You can hear the switch turning on and off rapidly. This causes me to flip the switch "OFF" almost immediately as that's just not good for the motor.

Leaving the tank bleed open will allow the motor and pump to run without issue. Close the bleed and it will build pressure to about 50 psi and then the motor loads down and stops.

Belt is not slipping.

I put an amp clamp on the motor wiring and it draws 1 to 5 amps when running up to 50 psi. When it hits roughly 50 psi the amp draw goes up rapidly to 20-25 amps and you can hear everything load down quickly. I only know it goes that high because I couldn't get to the off switch fast enough. Tried that twice and same result so I didn't try anymore times. Don't want to overheat/fry to the motor. Motor still runs fine in a no/light load condition.

Can't be the unloader, right? Unless my understanding is wrong, the unloader only comes into play on shut down/startup. So it shouldn't be why the pump is loading up and stalling the motor, right?

Tank check valve seems to hold once the pump shuts down.

Now the pressure switch, which I think might be my (self inflicted) problem.

It was originally used on the 110v motor/pump But the chart inside the cover of the pressure switch gives a 220 single phase rating which is 12amps. The new motor is a 15 amp max draw, so I thought it might be ok with it beng a 12amp switch.

Did I shoot myself in the foot with reusing the pressure switch? Can this be why the amp draw goes high when the pump loads past 50 psi? IE: too much current draw through the switch contacts, increases resistance, increases draw, etc?

The pressure switch did wok fine on the old 110v motor, so I'm thinking it's the draw, not so much the pressure switch itself is gone duff internally.

I've already got a 220v 26amp pressure switch on order, but I'd like to try and understand where I went wrong before trying with the new switch assembly.

Sounds to me like you have an overloaded motor. Can you produce the power curve for the pump? Most pumps are rated for some HP required for some speed and pressure. You say that it is a 2HP pump but at what speed is that HP required? Will 2HP run that pump at 1100 RPM or is the 2 hp rating at something like 757 RPM?

As the pressure builds is the motor slowing down enough for the start switch to kick in and that accounts for the sudden rise in current? Remove the pressure switch from the circuit and run power direct to the motor. Will it now pump to the rated pressure?

Also that pressure switch is a little suspect looking, but the image is so terrible I can't quite tell.

Certainly not something I would trust.

Great stock photos. Now show us how YOU wired it

the information you asked for it there if you look at them .

Line 1 and line 2 into the switch, line 1 and line 2 out to the terminals on the motor. Just like it is in the switch cover diagram (which I can see fine in the posted pic). I'm not an electrician, but it's not exactly rocket science either.

It's been taken apart to redo the mounting plate anyways. Wasn't happy with it as it hung a little too much weight to one side.

the motor plate is the great big pic that's in the second line of the response to you asking.

If you cant take the time to look at the information that's right in front of your face, I'm not sure what help you can offer either.

@Great white, I believe that the switch is manufactured by Pheonix. I bought one on Amazon recently that looks to be the same switch as you have posted here, for a very similar application. I had a couple of questions, and Pheonix's application folks were very helpful. Scroll halfway down the page, and hit the link.

3hp/15A exceeds the rating of the pressure switch.

OP should start with properly rated pressure switches before something fails. The contacts may already be damaged...

Thanks, but Ive already decided to dump the 120v/2A pressure switch for a 230v/26A switch. Same architecture as the 120V so I can reuse most of the pieces already there.

I'll keep that link in mind though. Could be useful later on.

Have you tried the above? It will eliminate all questions about whether the PS is the problem or not.

Haven't. it's pulled apart right now because I wasn't happy with how the weight was offset to one side more than the other. Building a new mounting plate that centers the weight....

Pics please, a poppet valve is more of a high pressure release. The check valve goes in the inlet to the tank, a one way spring loaded ball valve basically.
That's what it is. I know the term "poppet" from a different industry. In essence, a check valve.

The first thing I'd try is a smaller pulley on the motor. I've seen more than one pump speed chart that overloaded the motor.
Was thinking that too.

2.5 should drops it to 873 rpm, 2.75 to 960. Don't really want to go any smaller than 2.5 though. 873 should make it a little "quieter" too.

Having trouble finding ones in iron with a 58' bore that don't cost an arm and a leg though.

I may spin one out a temp use one on the lathe in aluminum and pop the cash on an iron one if it helps any.

LOL! Thats a mental image I could do without!

I'm welding on the bracket that's already on the pressure vessel. I'm mig and tig certified, but don't have the pressure vessel cert so I don't mess with them.

assuming still an issue, check the voltage at the plug, everyone can make a mistake

We are also assuming your gauge is accurate . is it possible it's not ?
Certainly worth considering.

I'll check it at the plug and slave in a different gauge when it's back together. I don't think the gauge is duff, but it's a quick verification to swap in another and see if it's at least close.

I installed a new 5HP pump from Eaton on my compressor a few years ago. I set the pulleys up to run at the rated speed with a good, accurately rated 5HP motor. Didn't work with my 5HP motor, would run a bit then pop the breaker. Slowed it down some and now it runs great with no issues.

Pressure switch was duff.

Went direct line 1 and line 2 to the motor and loading up seems to be gone over 50 psi.

Waiting for a new switch to arrive to confirm the old one was the issue.

Well. pretty much done up to waiting for the new pressure switch/unloader.

That 1/2 copper tube is some touchy to bend. Might be the brand as much as anything else. My benders top out at 3/8" so I had to form it by hand. I did try and make up a bender jig from a couple 1/2" pulleys, but the radius was just too tight for the tube and it would collapse right away. It's acceptable for function as is, even if you can see one or two barely visible spots where it looks like started to "kink".

The unloader line I just left long so I can run it to the new unloader. It supposed to have the same ports and format as the old one, but I never take anything like that for granted.

The handle I made removeable. Once in its “permanent” place, the handle would get in the way of opening the genny panel door, so making it removable just made sense. Two bolts and it slides right off.

Just have to finish installing the hour meter and then a couple squirts of Tremclad on the bare steel bits.

I’ve got just a touch under 400 bucks CAD into the rig. Not too bad for a small home use compressor with a V-Twin pump. You won’t get a comparable one around here for less than 1200 bucks….

nice work. I see you used wire shelving for the belt guard, funny I have a pc of the double wire( closer together) that I got for a belt guard for a compressor project I want to get at sometime.
I have a V-4 Dewalt with a 5HP motor & a 60 gal vertical tank . got most of the parts on discount ( new)

Are you certain you have 220 volt at the outlet and don't have it wired wrong and trying to run on 120 volt? One leg and neutral or ground?

Yes, thats an old piece of wire shelf thats been hanging around forever. The top cover part os an old trailer fender that I cut in half. Looks ok and does the job for zero bucks. Nothing wrong with recycling old bits that are already paid for!

I may add a few cross bars to it though, just to make it a little harder for a loose piece of clothing or fingers to get through. The compressor will sit in its own room, away from everything else, but I don’t want someone in there poking around for something, have the compressor turn on and something horrible happen.

30 years in SAR. I’ve seen first hand what happens when the human body gets pulled into a belt driven system. Seen it far too many times….
