Don't get me started on gerber... i'd trust a gerber just as much as i'd trust an Enfamil. Gerber knives are more dangerous to the user than anything.

Sadly, it didn't used to be that way. :(

Mine since 1980.

I'm a pocket knife enthusiast. My all time favorite pocket knife is the spiderco Delica. It has VG-10 steel and frn handle material. I like the full flat ground plain edge version. It's very light, holds an edge well. Some people don't like that it's a lockback rather than a frame lock or a liner lock because it requires two hands to close. I can close mine with one hand pretty easy though.

I'm a fan of Spyderco. I'm currently carrying a G-10 Dragonfly 2. I also rotate through with a G-10 Native, a Paramilitary 2 and a Benchmade Grizzly Creek. Of those I mentioned, the Native gets the most pocket time, followed closely by the Dragonfly.

That has not been my experience. I have a Blur that I consider a great buy and a quality tool. I send it in yearly....Kershaw sharpens it for free.
Walmart?
Gonna get some flame for this......Gerber is the Walmart of knives to me.
My experience.

This is my experience as well. I've carried the same SV30 bladed leek for almost 8 years, and it has been an excellent tool in that time. Requires very little maintenance, sharpens easily, and was less than $100 new. Whenever I have needed parts (screws, springs, safety lock, etc) I have called Kershaw and gotten them quickly in the mail, for free.

x2 on Benchmade knives being awesome. I love my Rift. Not sure you can still find them but the Kershaw Skyline is an awesome knife for edc as well.

I always have my pocketknife with me, I am a 3 blade stockman carrier as I use it for everything from castrating and ear marking to cutting material opening feed bags.....etc etc, my current edc is a blue and orange pearl handle hen and rooster I picked up at smokey mountain knife works a couple months ago, if you ever get the chance to visit take it.
I also have a couple of Moore makers from down in Texas www.mooremaker.com
A few cases I'm a big fan of the yellow handles
And lastly a few more hen and roosters.

When I was in the army I carried an applegate Fairbarn on my lbv, and a smith and Wesson swat on my belt. Circa 1997-2000

My fave is a Victorinox Florist/Grafting Knife. It has a single straight blade and holds its edge. The plastic handles have a slight texture making it easy to hold compared to the slick shiny side on most Swiss army knives.

I haven't read through all seven pages, but if you're going to carry something for rough duty, normal pocket knives simply won't last long without damage.

I carry one of two automatic H&K branded Benchmades for fighting purposes and simply will not use them for anything else.

For opening boxes, prying on stuff, etc I carry a Wilson COP tool (made by Boker). It has a serrated edge, a parachute cord cutter, glass breaker, pry tip, etc.

You carry a knife, all the time, for 'fighting'?

Like, you want to get into a knife fight?

Ok.

Spyderco or benchmade have some of the widest range for blade steel and purpose built knives. based on your intended usage determine your blade steel and style and go from there. Anyone can buy a run of the mill 440 steel blade with or w/o serrations from just about any manufacturer and it'll get the job done. But definitely look into what your intended use/hardness and sharpness need to be. A quick Google search of "best knife blade material" will net you lots of info. Go from there.

I have a benchmade adamas, contego, and triage auto. I've also had a Schrade 1st responder and a Milwaukee fastback that I primarily use. They all are carried for mostly emergency purposes and general rope or webbing cutting i.e. Seat belts. Most have a tanto style blade for the strong tip and half serrated. All can be used in a defensive scenario but if I find myself in that type of situation I did something wrong in the first place- for starters being there

No, I would hate being involved in a knife fight....or any fight really.

Regardless, a knife is better than fists. For my situation, it's nearly a last-ditch option after the gun/guns are out of ammo, or broken.

I should add that I carry knives with partially serrated edges in case I ever need to cut a seatbelt in an emergency. I've actually had that happen twice in 25 years...so it's worth considering...guess that's an exception to the fighting purpose ;-)

I'd love a Benchmade or other top quality knife but I generally donate two or three knives a year to the TSA and I use them for prying and other abusive things. As result I generally carry a Kershaw. They're decent quality but not so expensive that it's a hardship when something happens to them.

I've had this benchmade mini Griptilian for about 3 years and has been great. No complaints except maybe I should have bought the full size.

Knives like tools can be a scary slope, to a certain extent you get what you pay for, buy something good quality and it will last a lifetime. Benchmade and spyderco are both high quality brands and preferred by most their main claims to fame are griptilian (benchmade) and paramilitary 2 (spyderco).

Does anybody know what knife this is? (I couldn't find it in the replies.)

My everyday is a Benchmade Pinnacle 750 50/50 blade in ATS34. I have split kindling and cut drywall with it one tough knife but not in production anymore. You can find them on ebay every now and again but very expensive $500 and up.

Another spyderco fanboy. I have had them a couple for over 20 years. I love the delica, I have the half serrated, half regular blade and I also have the full serrated. I have never been a fan of plain edge pocket knives, the serrated can be used as a saw and I use it to cut through wires all the time, think old cords, junkyard car wires. They take some serious abuse. My favorite workhorse is an unknown model that spyderco made a long time ago. I bought it used over 20 years ago, it has a serrated blade with a very blunt tip, but not really a tanto, something close.

For years I carried a Case stockman. It always seemed to do what I needed. Before the stockman, I carried many different types and brands of knives. One day I was in Cabelas Clearance Cave and saw a Benchmade Volli. I really thought it would be too big to carry, but I had never had a Benchmade before, so I bought it. After getting used to the size, it has become the best daily carry knife I have ever had. I don't think I could carry a smaller knife again. I think I paid about 60-65 for it.

The Volli is my EDC, and by far the best I have owned. You got a steal at that price.

Im a huge fan of the Milwaukee fastback 2 utility knife for all most of my work related needs. However, when i'm not working I almost always have a carbon steel Opinel no.8 in my pocket. I prefer the carbon steel as you can get it scary sharp, however you do have to watch that you don't get it wet or get solvents on it. On my keychain is a classic swiss army knife that probably sees more use than both those combined.

CRKT best I've had but like case ** and Gerber I own them as well but the CRKT are made very nice especially the tactical knives like mine but are costly mine has the tanto blade the steel is very hard and it's hard to sharpen for me but when it's sharp it lasts a long time. The Kershaw knives look nice thinking of buying a snap on version.

Stick with a USA made blade. Not much more than Chinese made and you'll get better steel for the blade. Id personally stick with something in the Kershaw USA line. A Blur, Knockout, Link, Leek, Chive, Scallion, Dividend etc will serve you well. They all have different blade lengths and will hold an edge better than Chinese offerings. Usually range from $35 to $60 give or take.

Id stay away from Gerber and their "mystery steel".

If you wanted to drop more coin on a knife Zero Tolerance which is a sister company of Kershaw makes great USA made hard use knives.

Old thread but still relevant. Finally got a small Sebenza 31 coming. I've had a 21 for about 8 years and its just been a no frills super high quality knife. No worries of anything rusting, wearing out, or breaking since the whole thing is the highest of quality stainless or titanium with some brass bushings.

They're stupid money but are built to last generations. Hardly anything is made like that anymore.

Sadly because of the price a lot of the super nice knives only live to be display queens. Kind of like buying Snap-on to polish and Harbor Freight to do the real work. Backwards logic.

I used my large 21 CF like it was a Kershaw. I'm looking to buy a 31 large, just waiting on more handle options or custom graphics options. I'd like CF inlays.

Still have my daily carry pocket knife for the last 30+ years or so... Wenger-made Swiss Army. Does all I need it to and more. Funny thing is when one of the "youngsters" at work needs something unstuck or tightened and ask me for help, I cheerily say, "Sure, I've got an app for that", and whip out my Swiss Army knife. To really get their goat, I follow it up by saying, "BSA, Ret.". To answer the resulting blank quizzical stare I explain: Boy Scouts of America, retired".

Now you know the rest of the story...

I carry a Spyderco but if I were looking for a quality knife to abuse I'd just get a Schrade or Buck. Maybe not fancy and no special effects like one handed, but solid dependable functional knives.
