I carry a Spyderco but if I were looking for a quality knife to abuse I'd just get a Schrade or Buck. Maybe not fancy and no special effects like one handed, but solid dependable functional knives.

:+1: on the Buck and Shrade.---I have both, I use both, and I abuse both.---But they are not that expensive so one can afford just to get another one when one is worn out.---I like my blades razor sharp so they get whetted a lot.---Eventually you have to retire one.

I EDC a titanium/ carbon fiber military in s90v. Though I also have a paramilitary, salt I, military black on black, manix 2 xl, caly 3 cf and I think that's it for now.

Changed it up today. Before it went in my pocket I changed the bearings out for ceramic ones. It's a beautiful knife. Purple anodized/ black hardware.0a6607121a2278c3e48e4207eb2c78d4.jpg6b455eab2c83295964d352909a78d14d.jpga046b90dfab3cb7dec87c5841dc976d9.jpg

I really like my Kershaw 1840's but they are discontinued and typically go for more on ebay than what I paid for them. They are only about 5/16" thick in your pocket but have a 3.5" blade.

Does anyone have a recommendation for something similar? I really don't like the pocket bulge style that most current offerings have.

Old thread but still relevant. Finally got a small Sebenza 31 coming. I've had a 21 for about 8 years and its just been a no frills super high quality knife. No worries of anything rusting, wearing out, or breaking since the whole thing is the highest of quality stainless or titanium with some brass bushings.

They're stupid money but are built to last generations. Hardly anything is made like that anymore.

Sadly because of the price a lot of the super nice knives only live to be display queens. Kind of like buying Snap-on to polish and Harbor Freight to do the real work. Backwards logic.

I love my Umnumzaan. Got the Seb 21 and 25 too. All are users.

Search for Schrade frame lock. They made dozens of variations over the years.

Nice to revive some of these old threads.

Here is my Buck 112 which is now my EDC.

I got it a few years ago when I bought a dirty old SnapOn toolbox stuffed with miscellaneous tools and supplies. The knife was dirty and greasy and the tip of the blade was broken off. I sent it in to Buck for their reblading service. A couple of weeks later it came back looking like this. Amazing!

Kershaw Crown - amazing steel for a chineseum made knife, comfortable shape, micarta sides, liner lock, shape fits well in the hand, pocket clip. I've carried the current one for almost 4 years - I lost two and went back to the same style. Cuts everything I ask it to and holds a very sharp cutting edge.

Does anyone use a rescue knife? I bought a Tanto tip with a flash light -Performance tool brand. I wish I would left it in the store.
If you want that style blade there are plenty of reputable companies that make them.

That's the Kershaw storm. Nice little knife for what it was. Those same inserts my blur has, speaking of which, the original blur I had they used a material similar to skateboard grip tape. I kind of preferred that over the trac tek or whatever they call it since it wasn't so rough on the pockets.

I got a North Arm flipper but currently a year or so waiting list and not super expensive around $200.00 it is my EDC. My Shirogorov Neon is my dress up knife but more than most will pay for a pocket knife. Once you get knifes with these super steels you need to invest in a quality sharpening system unless your talented enough to hand sharpen them but will still need diamond plates on these higher quality steels. Be carefull once you start down the high end knife rabbit hole!!

I've carried Spydercos for as long as they have been made An my current one, a Bradly, runs over $170 but $200 is still super expensive for a pocket knife. Anything more than that is not going in anyone's pocket.

Not true. I EDC a few knives well over 200 and they get used like any other knife. If you can appreciate quality steels (super steels), synthetic or exotic handle materials and perfect or near perfect fit and finish along with certain features that make it appealing, you'll carry it. Same with my fire arms, tools, fishing equipment, camera gear, e.t.c. I won't buy something I don't intend to use and if I do and don't use it, it gets passed on to somebody who will use it whether it's sold or handed off.

My work EDCs area a 20 year old Victorinox Swisstool and a Revo Warden. I've had too many Leatherman tools fail to ever recommend one. I broke a Swisstool 20 years ago, but it was 100% my fault. I dropped it 40' with the blade open. Victorinox still warranteed it and the replacement has been bulletproof.
I got the Revo at an outdoor show for $45.00. Revo is a newer company trying to offer decent quality knives for reasonable prices. I like mine so far. It has G10 scales and the blade is 9cr18mov. I needed to give it a better edge, but that's just me, and the assisted opening is a little stiff, but it's been a good knife so far.

My personal EDCs are a Benchmade Volle and a Kershaw Ken Onion Rainbow Leek for dressier occasions.

If you are worried about breaking a tip, an opposing bevel blade would be good. The Benchmade Boost 591 is one.

Some day I just may have to learn how to post a picture and/or link. I carry an American made Buck 301 large stockman most of the time. Going out with the wife on the weekend it usually becomes 373 trio, the smaller version of the same knife but it's of Chinese descent. If it's something where I am supposed to wear my really nice clothes, its a Buck 375 Deuce. That thing is tiny, barely makes a lump in my pocket.

I have an original Leathermen I bought 30 years ago and it's bee on my belt ever since. I've gone through 3 or 4 of the leather holsters. I also carry a small Swiss Army knife (don't know the model) that was a gift many years ago and still sees some use as the small blade is handy. I have been looking at a new Leatherman but it's hard to give up the old one.

Sparky, I too use the 301 and also the 307 for heavy duty cutting and a healthy grip.---But I prefer the old flat V grind rather than the hollow grind.---I find it easier to sharpen.---Plus the older ones seem to have better metal.---This is JMO, others will prefer the former mentioned I'm sure.---But the prices of these discontinued models is getting out of reach.

Knives like tools can be a scary slope, to a certain extent you get what you pay for, buy something good quality and it will last a lifetime. Benchmade and spyderco are both high quality brands and preferred by most their main claims to fame are griptilian (benchmade) and paramilitary 2 (spyderco).

The PM2 is a great knife...but I would hardly call it Spyderco's "claim to fame."

The Endura and Delica are, and have always been, Spyderco's bread and butter. The Delica, for me, is way too small for a daily use knife, but the Endura, especially in FFG profile, is about as near perfect as an inexpensive knife can be.

My problem with any expensive pocketknife is that I manage to lose them. Usually in a chair or sofa where they turn up six months later. If I carry a cheap knife this doesn't happen. For the last year I have been carrying the HF "tactical" pocket knife. Not only have I been able to keep up with it but the quality is surprisingly good. Under 10 bucks and problem solved. As you can see by the pic it is a clone of a much more expensive knife and for all I know made in the same factory. Definitely worth trying .

Several years ago I would have said the same but this knife must be part of their "higher quality" push. It really is a decent knife. I use it daily for everything from prying open paint cans to using it to hammer things. It has served well. I have no HF stock. The quality is good, it holds an edge and I don't lose it !

No way, you need a $300 knife to put in your dress pants pocket, a $200 knife for your business casual khakis, and a $100 knife that's only used in the pockets of sweatpants

There is a pretty sizable chasm between a Harbor Freight or Ozark Trail Chinesium pocket knife, and a "$300 dress pant" knife.

$50-100 buys a lot of knife nowadays....absolutely zero reason to buy something like that. I do find it entertaining that a forum dedicated to quality tools, who worship at the altar of the tool truck, have zero issue with cheap, ripoff, gas station knives.

Good guns, good tools, good knives, and good boots.....there is simply no compelling reason to scrimp on any of those.

Do you use it to pry open paint cans because your HF screwdrivers bend when you use them?

In any case, It sounds like you're the perfect candidate for a $10 knife.

The knife I carry probably depends on the phase of the moon as much as anything else. The Spyderco is easily recognizable but the Boye is unusual with it’s cobalt blade.

https://www.boyeknives.com/pages/new-dendritic-cobalt for the curious.

I’m astonished at the markings visible in the photos.

And they are on sale for $4.99 (inside track club). I got two of them, they seem decent enough to me. I'll use them for opening boxes and cutting rope and hoses. No plans for prying or batoning. Time will tell.
The clip can be used in all four positions.

That Boye knife certainly is unusual.

On first glance I thought that it was a cast blade, which apparently it is. That’s usually the death knell for any potential cutting ability, but it seems not!

Very unusual blade composition!

I’d be interested to see one of these for real.

I can't imagine a better EDC knife for the average dude than my Victorinox swiss army Compact. It's got all the tools of a 3 layer swiss army knife in a 2 layer design. As a bonus, It fits nicely in that little pocket in your right side jean pocket.

Obviously it's not as fast as one of the bigger badder knives on here but it has so many useful functions. The one I use the most other than the blade? The little pen!

I carry a mini champ in my pocket every day no matter what folder or fixed blade I have. The Phillips, Pen & tweezers see the most use.
