They are for holding the square bolt head while you use a wrench on the nut. Their shape and angle makes them fit properly against the flat plane of the top of the battery.

Also sometimes the bolt gets over tightened and the lead gets smashed around the nut so you are unable to get a wrench or socket on it. Sometimes you have to use pliers to grab it.

Hmm thanks guys they will be handy I suppose

I'm sure I would have used them for that, just wasn't obvious when I saw the odd shape

I never really understood these pliers unless you needed something to work on a severely rounded nut. Seems like they do more harm than good on something in good shape

They're not made for the nut, they're designed to be used on other side so bolt doesn't rotate and strip the relatively soft battery terminal clamp.

Agreed. And it seems to me that if their sole purpose is really to hold the square head of the bolt, they could have smooth jaws (not serrated) to avoid chewing up the plating on the head.:dunno:

No. The jaws are made to grip severely corroded nuts where no wrench or socket will remove the remains of the nut.:wtf:
