That doesn't look very deep, I think the wire entry alone will hit the receptacle. :(

I agree metal boxes are the way to go though. And perhaps it's just how I'm looking at it, and it's got more room than I think.

Times like these are when you go to the electrical supply house or buy online if necessary. You may find them to be on par with their pricing & have better quality to boot. With the entry on the side rather that behind one of the screw holes it may work out.

What he said; big box stores, IMHO, stock merchandise using the 80/20 rule. That is 80% of their sales are 20% of a product line. Big box stores offer what "weekend warrior" electricians and plumbers buy, but serious types seem to avoid using them.

In order to maximize thier return on the investment in their inventory they typically stock what moves off their shelves fastest.

Use a "full line" supply house for those rarely requested specialty items.

Inspector signed off on our rough in this Monday. We got all the receptacles in now except the two 6-50r. I had purchased 14-50r originally before I ran all the wire for everything and need to exchange them. The one on the left wired up really easily actually with no issues on the amount of room in the box and I think coming in from the side did make a difference in that.

Happy to have power though and the wife was in tears when we turned on the first breaker for the garage door opener. Coming up on a 1yr since we started this project and it's getting close to being a functional garage now.

Thanks for all your help!

Lift is in too! ;)

What is that recept for? Its not a 6-50 The box stores have everything for this, the boxes are not different than the ones at a jobber. Those are deep. We usually use one with raised cover. but nothing wrong with this as long as you want a 30A recept.

The one on the left is a 6-30, one on the right will be a 6-50. I have one other 6-30 and one other 6-50 not pictured as well.

Sorry for the confusion. I was just saying I didn't wire up the one on the right because I had originally purchased 14-50r but later chose to run 6-2 wire and not 6-3. I need to exchange my 14-50's for 6-50's

The clamp is installed backwards if it matters to your inspector

I know this comes a day late and a dollar short, but the screws go on the outside, and the nut goes on the inside.

Additionally, that clamp cannot be used on a plastic box, because there is no provision to ground it.

I would not consider modification of a cheap plastic box, but the one in question is the much stronger fiber reinforced kind. I think that drilling it for a cable clamp might be ok, but only if you can find a plastic clamp that suits your needs, or if you can find a metal clamp that can be grounded.

But kudos on switching to metal boxes in the end. Good choice.
