Quick 2 questions about my pole barn

When I do the grading and soil/grass around the barn, should I go all the way up to the metal or stay a certain distance away from it down the skirt board? Also I have the waiscoting with the 2 colors and it has that "z" channel and when it rains I can see water sitting on it isn't this going to cause the top siding to start rusting from the edge sitting in the water all the time?
Thanks

You should grade 2"-3" below the sheets, more if possible. The upper sheets should be installed 1/8" minimum above the flashing. Sounds like a lazy installer. The warranty on the sheeting may be in question at this point.
Unfortunatly it is not an easy fix.

Fortunately I paid someone to build it. Maybe I should contact them? Or the place I bought the barn from that sent them?

I would start with the barn company. You didn't hire the installer so you have no beef with him. Show them pictures and ask about the warranty on the sheeting.
I hate to say this, but all the upper sheets will need to be replaced. If the sheets are in fact tight to the flashing then the rust has already started and you will start to see staining on the flashing pretty soon. The flashing will have to be replaced also.
I may have missread. Did you hire the erector or did the barn company? If you hired the erector then it is his problem. He will have to replace the material.

It was like a referral system with the barn co. Preffered builders. Or what not. I will take some pictures and put them up on here.

I would run a bead of silicone around the building. my roof sheeting is rusting back about 3/8" in 20 years because it had a cut edge.

Bad install. Typically there should also be more screws at the top and bottom of sheets. The lap on the flashing looks a bit short also.
You recognized the problem and you are right. Keep in mind that the install may be considered "normal" in your area and the installer may not see anything wrong. He has done a hundred buildings that way and never had a problem.
A lot of building companies roll their own sheets and the warranty comes from the supplier of the coil stock. Warranties on sheeting can become very complicated.

Ill call the builders and they can run a bead of silicone around there. Then Ill email the warranty people and let them know that I might have a claim in 20 years.

If you are going to caulk use a good caulking like urethane, I like Vulkem 116, never silicone

I should be able to find something in the building instructions stating how it should have been done. The worst part is getting the 2 colors is a upgrade and now its a downgrade.

I reread my post's and realized I wasn't being very clear. It makes me angry when I see people in my trade doing such a poor job. It makes us all look bad. To the casual observer your building looks great but problems were installed that you will have to contend with in the future.
The point I was trying to make about warranty is that you don't have one. The installer voided the sheeting warranty when he installed the sheets down on the flashing
Most building suppliers provide an installation guide and/or details on the plans to guide the installation of the sheets including spacing and screw layout.
The installer never looked at the specs since he has done so many buildings. Well so have we but we always review the plans and new things pop up all the time.

Well I didn't pay the installer to void my warranty so what is my recourse for that? I was wondering why I have 3-4 boxes of extra screws.

It is not unusual to have extra screws. They usually come in quanties of 250. As I mentioned before there aren't enough screws at the top and bottom of the sheets. That may account for some of them.
I would let the installer know in writing that you are unhappy with his work. In the mean time talk to the supplier and get any paperwork and warranty info that you can. It should have been provided when the building was delivered.
Educate yourself about the issues involved. PM me if you need info. Do not start dealing with the installer untill you understand your position and can layout the facts in a clear coherent way.

On the base of my metal building I put crushed gravel, about 18 - 20", then graded the dirt. This helps keep any dirt from splashing onto the sides from leaky cutters, or just moisture dripping. I also agree with others have said about NOT using silicon, but a urethane product.

Check out BB767's garage and see what he did with his pole barn. Thomas is a very, very, particular person, and can probably make someone with OCD look like a slob  WHen he does things, he does them right so they will last, and so one solution does not create another problem. Here is his thread http://garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51567 To find out what to do with the pole barn, either ask him or Chris and they can point you to the pics, or start at the bottom last page and work backwards. The reason I say to start at the last page and work backwards if you want a quick answer.....if you start at page #1 opening thread, you will be sucked into another world for a week. You will have to call into work and take a weeks vacation. If you have a laptop, just have the wife bring your meals into the bathroom so you can multi task. You will emerge a week later with a full beard, just shaking your head at the amount of amazement that you will see in that time. The kids will have grown older, the wife may look different, and she will look differently at you for sure. Just take this as fair warning :rocker:
