Quick weekend project on old UK garage

I have, in addition to my main garage, an additional garage next to my house which i use for storage of junk and cars which "need work"!

The garage is an old pre-fab, probably about 40 years old. The main structure of it is OK-ish, but the doors were in a really poor state. In fact earlier this year, someones previous repairs to the door failed and the left hand door was now only held on with the top hinge!

Despite putting it off for a few years, i needed to replace the doors. As it is in a fairly damp area, (surrounded by trees etc), i didn't want to use wood again. So i decided to use steel. Im hoping this choice means i wont need to do anything for a very long time in terms of maintenance.

I had the steel frames welded prior to this weekend so that o could ensure i could get it all done in one day. As the front of the garage has access to the public, it couldn't be left open overnight.

Anyway, enough talk, here are some pics.

As there was no means of attaching the doors to the original structure, i put in a steel frame which i welded in-situ. The bottom part will be covered in concrete to form a ramp into the garage. It was welded to various original parts of the garage. Not pretty, but functional.

Sadly, owing to the very cold temps, sealing up the gaps and finishing the painting will have to wait.

Not the most exiting project in the world, but one that needed doing!

Good start roger440, is this garage going to be just a store or a work in garage, if so there is going to be lots of work going on on insulation alone :dunno: it'll be a cold place otherwise.Dolamite and is the other a 2000 estate(break) as bidouchon said.

No, just storage. I have another garage to work in, though thats an upcoming project.

Sad question but its been bugging me may I ask what makes the welder in the photo.

Well, i wasn't actually sure, so i had to go and look! Its made by SWP ltd in Hampshire, and goes under the name of Classic Mig 160. Had it a few years now. Been no trouble at all apart from needing a new torch - but that was operator error!

It occurred to me while sorting out pictures for my other thread, i never posted the completed job on this one.

Put in a concrete ramp to tidy up the entrance and get rid of the step. Some expanding foam and frame sealer, the frame was made weather right to the concrete structure. Installed rubber flap seals all round to keep as much weather out as possible. Job complete :)

Nothing special but it needed. doing.
