Yes, buy them something that isn't cheap chicom ****. IOW, no, those junkers are plain loud. Any direct drive compressor (insert cheap) is going to be loud.

I was on a job not that long ago when the framers brought some POS HF or worse pancake compressor and hooked it up to 2-3 nail guns. So, it really never stopped all day. The next day I brought a cast iron belt driven compressor to the job and told them to use it.

We couldn't talk all day the first day w/o shouting. Nice when you're in a neighborhood.

Well, "Zeke" could be right but personally, I don't really think the air-compressor is loud because it is made in China, I think it is loud because oil-less compressors tend to be louder simply because of the way they are designed. I tend to think they would be louder no matter where they are made.

The only value of a oil less compressor is to place it in a cemetery to raise the dead. People buy them because they are cheap, or ignorant, ignorance is not the same as being stupid, BTW.

A compressor with a cast iron pump will be the quietest, cast aluminum, & oil less, much more noisy, the problem is if you want a portable unit, cast iron is not helpful.

I don't know if compressed air is needed for dry cleaning, to blast the powder right? but you would think it needs to be no oil to avoid contamination

This is a good point. The question then is what is the actual average air volume that is needed. There are very quiet diaphragm pumps that might work with a decent storage tank. There are bigger quiet oilless designs too for example - http://www.homedepot.com/p/Californ...gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CPWhg4aBqtYCFUqEYgod6ksNFQ

But to answer your question, not much can be done with what you picture- lbuild a sound deadening enclosure around it...?

You are correct that I 'assumed'. There are some cheap compressors from Italy too. But, if you bet on the average pancake being made in china, I think you could bank money.

Also to be fair, the compressor appears to be missing its intake silencer/filter assembly. Those direct-drive compressors absolutely roar without the intake muffler.

Lmao

Thx for the laugh.

And yeah people mistake ignorance for stupidity all the time.

Ignorance is simply the lack of knowledge.

And Stupidity..... well we know what that is.

Replace it with a California air compressor made in China that happens to ultra quiet.

Build an enclosure around it and line the inside with fiberglass. Just make sure to allow for the heat it gives off by making it bigger or venting it indirectly somewhere.

The bare walls and floor certainly aren't helping since the sound will bounce around for ages before being absorbed.

Im starting to wonder if this is a troll post.

Who lives UNDER a dry cleaners what with the toxic chemicals that spill and leak through the floor?

Theres a local dry cleaners that contaminated the ground water and caused several city and private donestic wells to be shuttered.

The chemicals so nasty that the EPA classified it as a superfund site and had to install ground water filtering. Uranium was also discovered in the water....topic for another discussion.

Needless to say, i highly doubt any municipality would allow a residence below a dry cleaners.

And why would they be using an air compressor just in the morning?

I'm not trolling lol i live in new york city. you know how some people live above stores well the cleaners is street level and i live in the back of it which is directly under it. there storage room and the boiler room are on the same level as my apt in the back of the building. every morning from 7-3 it makes extremely loud noises and when we spoke to him about it all he did was buy the new one i just showed a picture of. i thought it might have been the machine hitting the concrete floor but that didn't help with the mat i bought and the dude barely speaks English so i don't know how to explain it anymore to him. i've lived below this place for 26 years but his recent machines have been getting crazy with the noises

if this is for a business.... then that California air tool post by showkey is pretty quiet...

like many have mentioned that the problem is type of compressor it is not problem with COO.... even if it is made in the USA it would be loud.... but that is garagejournal for you.... you really don't want to mess with building a sound proof cabin to house it in and then getting the in take outside, vibration isolation, and ventilation so it won't get on fire from heating up...by the time you are done with material cost, labor cost, and cost of extra space , a new compressor would have been more economical....

saying that... if it is not your business, good luck in trying to convince the owner of that business to switch over.... they can be pretty cheap when spending on tools for a non-tool related business. But it is one of those things like me trying to explain to my neighbor on a semi attached building that he plays his Spanish music too loud in the afternoon that I can feel the sub woofer beating on through the 2 feet of brick layers.

26yrs? Damn dude that's crazy. Hope ya don't mind but I got to ask. Where is it at and what kind of money does something like that cost. There's obviously a reason for being there that long like being right next to your work. But I just can't imagine living in one place that long.

Just curios, Cam

If that compressor (the HF one) was in a business in CA, it would be illegal because it requires a permit to operate a air pressure tank, & it would not be approved.

Being in California myself (couple hours south of Norcal), what he is saying here is NOT bullsh*t...

I can't believe a dry cleaner can get by with a consumer grade compressor like this. Most dry cleaner use at least a real 5 HP. A slow turning pump would cut down on a lot of noise for sure
