I'm not in the market for a compressor, but today I was at Lowes and saw in the space where the Ingersoll 80 gallon 5 Hp compressor used to sit is now occupied by this bad boy.

Now, I say I'm not in the market because I brought home an IR 80 Gallon 5hp unit about 2 years ago that was sitting in that same space. If this Quincy had been sitting there then it would have been in my garage instead of the IR.

It's 1987 online. It will be available in my store for pickup on 4/8.

Air compressors direct is 1999, free shipping , no tax. $50 lift gate.

It will be neat to check one out on person!

The one on line for $1987 isn't the model as the one pictured in the initial post. The one shown on line is a V-twin design

I thought the same thing. I don't need a compressor but am definitely interested in scoping that one out to see what's so special about a Quincy. According to the website, it'll be available from my local store on 4/9

The one the OP pictured from the store is Model# 251CP80VCB. The one online at Lowe's is the same model. I believe the online picture is wrong.
Here's the same comp at Northern Tool..... http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200451863_200451863

Quincy's are nice, almost as nice as a Champion IMO. The Ingersoll 2 stage that size @ TSC is about half the price as that Quincy the OP posts above, BUT, you get what you pay for in compressors IMO. I'm new here as well, - from what I've been reading, quite a few guys on this site are knowledgeable in this area. The better compressors cost more, but have low rpm pumps that make great SCFM's. They also last longer with little maintenance.

I think this is the first time for me, -seeing a Quincy at either of the big box stores.

If I had my choice I would have went with a Champion or a Quincy. Both units can be built to order at the factories. MADE IN USA.

Funny you'd say that, because that's part of my curiosity since I've got a Champ. It's pretty much a monster, so I want to see in person what a Quincy is like since they're sort of the gold standard.

Oh ****……Quincy appearing in a big box store is in my opinion a bad move on their part. Now their going to be considered like the rest, nothing more than cheap homeowner garbage the same way Ingersoll-Rand destroyed their reputation. Them trying to compete with the low end junk is the beginning of their demise.

$2000 compressor is "cheap home-owner garbage"?

I just read this

(I have this exact model in my home garage. After five hours, the contacts on the electric motor fried and the bakelite endcap exploded in a bunch of pieces. It cost me $185 to fix and I was told I would have no further problems. With 11 hours on it, the motor caught fire and almost burned my garage down.

It's not the pump that is the problem, it is the Baldor/Reliance electric motor. Proceed with caution.)

There is a difference in selling your brand to a box store and making a complete pile of ****. I would pick quincy over IR anyday. Not sure on current prices but I think a. BElaire unit might be better on the wallet.

I'm surprised, never heard anything bad about Quincy in the past...Have now!

I went with IR's, they were more affordable in price. Like the OP, I have a 2 stage 80 gal IR currently. It was $980 at TSC about two years back. Honestly NEVER a problem, and I use it quite a bit...My electric bill knows I do. Before the 80 gallon I had a smaller IR Garage Mate that I was persuaded to sell with my last house. Had that for 9 years or so, - never a problem with that one as well. I guess I've been very fortunate... Glad I haven't been stuck with a lemon.

Like I posted earlier, if given a choice, - I would have went with a Champion at what, -3 times the price. Wasn't in the cards at the time.

The Motors been fine, -I have a pic of the sticker somewhere.. Here, -

I did a lot of research on compressors about 2 years ago and went with a Quincy - 80 gallon, 2 stage upright. Not sure if it's the same as the one pictured; if not, it's close. One of my favorite comments about the Quincy -- "You don't buy a Quincy for yourself. You buy it for your grandchildren. You're just keeping it for them until it passes to them."

Curious how much your bill changes. Im sure if I were smart enough there is a formula I could use to figure it out.

I've got the same model Quincy. It runs approx. 20 times a day for the last 5 years. Never had a problem with it. We have changed the pump oil a few times and drain tank every day.

I have burnt up a comparable IR unit in about a week. The pump developed a rod knock. It could very well be a bad pump that wasn't caught at the plant.

To get a ballpark figure, look at your electric bill and divide the bottom line charge by the number of kilowatts used. There are charges that are not per kilowatt, but the calculation will be a close figure of the cost per kilowatt.
Then figure out how many kilowatts the compressor uses. It will vary with startup, run and load, but this is an estimate. Watts are volts times amps.
For example, if the compressor is 240 volts at 30 amps it is 7200 watts. That is 7.2 kilowatts.
If your electric costs 10 cents per kilowatt, running the compressor continuously for an hour would cost about 72 cents.
It doesn't sound like much, but if you run it for a few hours per day most days of the month, it can add up to a noticeable increase in the bill. I figure it is a small penalty to pay for the amount of work it accomplishes.

I am going to go look at this one for $900

Air compressor, 5 hp, 60 gallon vertical

Single phase power 220
Two cylinder Quincy pump head, pressure oiling system.
Set to start at 110 psi, shut off at 140, regulator output pressure at 95psi

Does anyone know about the Leeson electric motor?
