Probably asking way to much IMO. It's only a single stage 60gal. Find out how much SCFM it puts out...If you can.

Does anyone know about the Leeson electric motor?

The story I read said that a guy named Lee started Baldor, and his sons split off and started Leeson. They are known to be good motors. I compared Leeson and Baldor motors a little while ago. Leeson was less expensive and has a longer warranty. For the model I was looking at, the Baldor is made in the USA while the Leeson is made in Mexico.

I agree with prior post that $900 seems like a big price for a single stage pump.

Leeson or Baldor motors are my preference on the machines I design and have built at work. Which one we get usually comes down to who has the cheaper washdown or premium efficent or shorter lead time.

for the price of that machine you can get a harbor freight unit for cheaper brand new. its actually a belaire.

his price is high for a used compressor. i wouldnt pay more than 600, and even at that price you can get a new puma, but it probably doesnt match the quality of the one in the craigslist ad.

just some options.

One more question on compressors, last Saturday, I found a Dewalt: D55168 w/ 15 gal upright tank, 200 psi @ 5.0 SCFM; 1.6 HP at the Home Depot for $ 280.

Now I'm a home garage guy, use it mostly for blowing off engines, a little air wrench work, and some occasional carpentry with a nail gun.

The one that i have is quite a bit smaller, but about a month ago I found it running and running, but no air was in the tank. I haven't had time to get it in where it is warm to look at it, but I thought the Dewalt might be a good substitute. By the way, I get that one when the previous owner upgraded. It has worked well for many years, until lately.

Is this worth it? If so, I'll go back this Saturday.

I think the Cfm would be ok,other than the air ratchet for very long, but that is a small tank. That will cause your compressor to run frequent depending on your use. That could piss off wife, neighbors, you, etc. Just a thought.

I did a lot of research on compressors about 2 years ago and went with a Quincy - 80 gallon, 2 stage upright. Not sure if it's the same as the one pictured; if not, it's close. One of my favorite comments about the Quincy -- "You don't buy a Quincy for yourself. You buy it for your grandchildren. You're just keeping it for them until it passes to them."

Scott

That quote is meant for the QR Series compressors.

2 Stage, -More air, less moisture, lower heat.

Actually 2 stages is higher pressure, but LESS AIR. If you consuming air at 120PSI, pressurizing it to 170 wastes energy. Comparable dual-cylinder but single stage compressor will make greater CFMs.

Sears is on sale for $230 OFF......$499 total

http://www.sears.com/craftsman-prof...p-00916476000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1

For $40 more, the Puma seems to have more features:

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200455341_200455341

Puma: Cast Iron
Sears: Aluminum

Puma Air Outlet Size: 1/2"
Sears Air Outlet Size: 3/8"

Puma Amps: 15
Sears Amps: 20

Puma CFM at 90 PSI: 12
Puma CFM at 40 PSI: 13.5

Sears CFM at 90 PSI: 11.3
Sears CFM at 40 PSI: 12.9

Puma Weight: 251 lbs
Sears Weight: 234 lbs

It looks like the Puma has 2 cylinders and the Sears has 1??

you are not paying just for a second stage, you are buying a higher quality machine overall.

Yeah well looks like the $530 Puma is not really an option......$150 shipping would make it $680

I guess I need to shop and find something new at a local business, if the price is right

That particular IR (pump/motor series) is one of their better ones. EXCEPT, -it's a single stage and it's at a higher price vs their two stage that size.

If you have a TSC in your area, look up the 80 gallon IR 2 stage they offer. They were just under a grand and of course, you get more for your money. USA motors motor and the TS5 pump.

Others have had bad luck w/certain consumer models, from what I hear. I can vouch for this model.

This is the TSC model I was referring too, -

http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/ingersoll-randreg;-5hp-air-compressor-80-gal

If your interested, -TSC might give you 10% off, -just ask if it would be possible. That's all I've done with larger purchases from there in the past. It has actually worked at that place. See, -

That's a single stage vs the two stage with the IR's. Why would you want a single if dual can be had at the price/same quality ? That's all I'm pointing out,- with the IR's anyway.

OK so my next question...... running 220v into my shop

I'd hire an electrician for sure...... but before I buy a 220v compressor, how do I make sure my shop can have 220? I'm getting mixed answers all over the web

My house has a 200amp panel in the main 2 car attached garage......my shop is built off this 2 car attached garage and has a 60amp breaker (on the main 200amp panel) that feeds the shop

The shops sub panel is a 100 amp panel that has 2 un-used breaker slots......

Sub panel in the shop

Depends on the compressor you go with. You figure that out yet ?

You have 100 amp to the SP. Looks like you have room on that panel. 3horse 30amp. 5horse 30 -40amp. 7.5horse 40-60amp. It SHOULD say in the manual provided with/ or online. Other than that, yea, depends upon the compressor.

My panel is capable of 100 AMPS

However, the subpanel is wired to a 60 AMP breaker in the main panel

I still think you'll be alright. Your looking at 60 gal single stages right ?

Worst case, you might have to run wire from the main....Again, depends on the compressor and what else you have going on in garage (power wise).

So, I'll ask again; You find a compressor yet?
