Raccoon problem

Hi everybody.

So over the holidays I heard quite a noise coming from the attic and it turns out there was a disco on up there. I boarded up his entry, which was up on the roof and he’s back up there clawing away trying to get back in.

Any recommendations on detergents or general advice?

ammonia soaked rags at the entry point .
you have to make raccoons decide to leave, they will fight you if you try to make them leave.
ammonia smell they don't like and after a while will decide to leave.
I would even put some in the attic where they were comming in

Will try ammonia.

Do you think a pellet gun will kill a raccoon? I have a pump pellet gun that says it’s 600fps.

A pellet gun of that power range is kind of light. I have a 1200 fps pellet gun and feel that it's a tad light. I'm into animal control and use sub sonic 22 rounds when I'm in the city or suburbs. I'm confident in my shooting skills that I could it with a pellet gun. If you are not a good shot I wouldn't use it.

If you can borrow a .22 rifle (use long rifle cartridges) with a 4X scope, that should do it. As long as the rifle and scope are sighted in you won't have a problem hitting him. If you lived near me you could use mine.

Havahart live trap. .22 short to the head once you catch it. Bait with Doritos to avoid catching cats (which I believe I learned here) Don’t quit after you catch one because there may be more.

x2 on the havahart live trap. I use tuna for bait. By the way if you catch and intend to release them, make sure you take them a good distance from your house as they will find there way back if you release them nearby. Also in some jurisdictions there are very specific requirements for dealing with the critter after you catch him and it may not be legal for you to release them. I suspect it has to do with concern about spreading diseases etc. I also agree there may be more than one. You do not want them in your attic as they will do significant damage. They will pull off and chew through any boards and trim that you replace or install to get back in your attic . Good luck.

.22 and wait for it to show back up. If you don't have a rifle a cheap $100 one from walmart would suffice for this job.

Live trap, shoot while still in trap, double plastic bag the body, put in your trash can for pick up. Don't even think of releasing the animal in someone else's neighborhood to be someone else's problem.

I had a raccoon move into my shed, with her babies. I guess she liked the dark place that it offered. I opened the shed door and slid a halogen light right up next to where she was and turned it on. I checked back on her about a week later and she was gone.

Ok. I’m leaning towards live trap and release in the Forrest. I saw him today crawling up the eaves. What can I do to the eaves to stop him from climbing up?

How do you know it is a he? Could be a mama trying to get back to her babies. Don't catch and release. Trap and kill is way more humane. City raccoons don't do well in the true wild. Have you been in the attic to check for babies?

Two suggestions: turn a light on in your attic and place a radio in there. ***** hate the light and don't want to be around the noise of people talking.

I turned on a light and Howard Stern and it left within a day.

It's illegal to release raccoons in most states because of rabies. If you are going to release it , you need to go at least 10 miles from your home or there is a very good chance it will return. I do animal control and tested the by spray painting an orange spot on their back. 8 miles and they returned.

Call your local veterinarian and ask who your local animal control officer is, they should come set up a trap and remove the animal as part of your services. If the vet doesn’t know who to call,!check with a wildlife officer, and if they don’t want to deal with it, they should be able to lend you a trap.

Any SOB who catch and releases a raccoon is probably the same SOB who dumps unwanted dogs and cats out in the country.

Trap and shoot the thing. It has learned to prefer living in your attic. Last year I got twelve. Lure with pet food, peanut butter, tuna or sardines. If you trap a cat, turn trap on end, open gate, and dump him out. You will get bit or scratched even if you wear welding gloves.

I had a neighbor that tried that once. I asked him about the horrible looking scratch on his arm, he then told me about his pet raccoon, that he was going to tame. He put it into his garage, the raccoon scratched a hole through the wall of the garage to get out. Lost pet, oh well.

If you shoot it near the opening to your attic, make sure the first shot is a good one. The raccoon only has to survive a few seconds after being shot to scramble back into your attic, and I guarantee it will die in the most inaccessible place.

This is why shooting one with a pellet gun is a bad idea. A wounded raccoon will be much more troublesome and dangerous than a dead one.

Raccoons are big enough that the smell of a rotting one will last forever.
