Race Deck install

So I’ll soon be doing my Race Deck install and was curious if any had opinions on whether to paint the floor or seal it before I install the tiles. I have had RD before and just painted the concrete around the edges that was left exposed. This time I’m using the free flow tile and thought maybe it would help the floor dry quicker if sealed or painted.

I only cleaned the floor, it was 38 years old when I laid the RD, scraped up some paint and drywall globs before. No paint or sealer or landscape fabric. No regrets. If you want to take a look at my floor I am retired and live a few minutes north of Cincinnati. CJDave.

Dave, Is your RD the solid or vented kind? If solid and you put down no geofabric do you notice much nose when walking on it? Apologies for horning in on Cooper’s post

Mine is the Free Flow or vented type. There was some clicking at first but I guess the tiles take a set to the surface underneath and that clicking disappeared. CJDave.

No worries! My first RD floor was diamond sold tiles and that was one of my only gripes. The hollow noise. Not a big enough gripe to not want it, but it was a gripe. The whole cloth underneath came along years after I installed it. I never did it.

Dave, thanks for the invite. I’ll probably just do like you did and I did on my first one.

Mine was a new (60 day old) slab that was pristine so I sealed it with silaxoseal (sp?) first.

I just ordered my free flow
My floor is 4.5 years old with tire marks and stains....
I swept it out and applied this sealant.
PS101 Siliconate Multi-Surface (Smooth) WB Penetrating Sealer.

I used up almost two gallons for 20X26 garage.

I didn’t wash stains (too lazy, but I should have.)

It appears to work by beading up water. I wish I had applied when floor was new.

Free flow will active in two weeks..

Ok I got the floor finished up on Tuesday and thought I’d post a few pictures. I still have a bit of clean up and organizing by the Cayman and my Porsche decor back up. So far I’m really loving the Flow Through as opposed to the solid surface RD I had before.

That looks great  Is the center grey the "Alloy" color, or "Graphite"? I am assuming Alloy. Just submitted for a quote yesterday and plan to use a grey as my main color as well if I move forward, just not sure which yet. Thanks!

Yes alloy. The Grey I worried would bring the floor up and make it feel too cloister phobic with the dark gray walls.

Yup, I know exactly what you mean. Same thing I was thinking about that it might be too dark with the graphite, but I do have much lighter gray walls. Thanks again for the info.

looks great! thanks for sharing and choosing RaceDeck

Sure! Shauna was really great to work with. I told her I’d send some pics. Once I get everything back together I’d be happy to do that. And feel free to use them in the gallery. [emoji6]

those are the patented RaceDeck Accupark parking guides that snap into the floor

Yup. They’re nice but I am having an issue with one not staying stuck to the tile below. I sent a video to Shauna on Tuesday who is fwding to CS. Awaiting their reply.

That does look good. Question however...how well does your floor jack roll on the new floor? is it smooth or do you need to lift a bit?

The jack is totally fine. I do use plywood under it to not put the weight on each wheel of the jack likely causing damage. Jack stands are a different situation. I will have to get new ones that have a flat base rather than the four legs of angled steel I currently have. I think those would cut right through the ribs of the tile.

It won't cut through but will deform the tiles slightly. I figure I could replace a tile or two but never felt the need as you have to go looking to even see it. A jack is awesome to roll around. You can slide it sideways with ease.

How hard is it to cut the tiles? I am trying to decide between these tiles to the roll out mats.

I don't have the parking guides, but then again, I don't park the cars in the garage either. I just use the garage as my workshop. But I think if I were to park in the garage those parking guides would be a really good thing to have.

It’s really easy. I started out using a circular saw but, like the Diamond Plate RaceDeck I had before, it cuts easy with a good box knife. It can get pretty tough on your hand after I while but I just split up the cutting across two days. The saw was fast but man it makes a mess! And with the Flow Through tile not being solid surface, the teeth would bang into the tile fins and would break the tiles if cutting close to the edge. Just use a good straight edge and a box knife. If I were doing these a lot or professionally, I would have a jig and a some type of guillotine. I also tried using my angle grinder with a cut off wheel and it just got way to hot and was just too fine. It would just melt and ball up.

CooperS - Race Deck floor looks great!

And I have to ask about your ceiling. It has a coffered look - can you tell me about it? Maybe an additional pic? I've got places in my garage ceiling where the drywall tape is starting to lift and peel. Your pics gave me an idea - use 1x pine boards to cover the seams with a coffered look. If I primed and painted the boards before install it would be an easier fix than drywall taping and sanding above my head.

That is EXACTLY what I did. The builder didn’t finish the garage drywall, just poorly taped the ceiling and none on the walls. As far as the ceiling, I got quotes to finish it ($1000) and no way was I paying that price to just finish the ceiling. And no way was I doing it! I hate drywall work! But I was standing there one day and it hit me, just use nice clear pine 1x4 to cover the joints and nail lines, then caulk and paint. I ended up with 4x4 areas across the ceiling.

It’s more paneled than coffered. I added 11 4’ LED twin tube lights and ended up with $400 in the whole project DIY. I’m not super happy with the pegboard anymore so I’m thinking of ideas to change it. The ceiling looks different over the Cayman because the truss run the opposite direction but it works out ok. Thanks for the additional pic and details. I think my garage has a paneled look in its near future. Enjoy your wrenching!

That looks fantastic!
So, did you end up sealing or painting the slab before the RD installation?

I am hoping to add Racedeck (or maybe another tile brand) to my garage in the near future. What keeps me away is worry about water and slush just sitting underneath it over winter months and damaging the slab (5-year old house). We have a small slope, which moves the water towards the door slooowly, so I just push it out with a broom when I get a chance. Plus I already have some oil/coolant stains that I didn't get to quick enough and they seeped into the slab. :(
What would happen with an oil spill over the RD tiles? Are they easy to lift up in a spot and take out for a cleaning and clean the spot underneath?
Free Flow RD would be amazing!

I worried about the same thing and was pretty reassured by several people in the snow belt it’s not a big deal. Winter will be the answer.

Mine drains slowly too but eventually ends up evaporating. They are super easy to pop up. A stiff putty knife and bam, they unlock.

Thanks. That's re-assuring.
I also noticed that the pool of water from the car parked on the right slowly follows a specific path down the slab towards the door, but then takes a slight detour to the left part of the garage by the door. I park my summer car on the left over the winter, so whenever I see that, I attack it right away as I don't want to have pool of water evaporating under my summer car that is stored under cover.

Have you tried to splash some water on a section to see how the tiles carry it out? I am hoping they would keep it running straight down towards the door.
Since I have MDF baseboards around the garage perimeter, I've never hosed down the surface etc. I only sweep and vacuum it thoroughly. If these tiles carry the water straight out, they may make it possible to actually wash a car or hose out dirt at least from the center of the garage.

Cheers
