Rick the garage is really looking great!

I am about the pull the trigger on the Tirerack wheel rack. What are your thoughts on it? Does it seem pretty sturdy?

Thanks!

Dammit Rick, I was fixing up my garage doors today after the ceiling drywall went up and my buddy just ended up using a couple beat up pieces of plywood for the bearing support in the middle of the door. . . Now I'm either going to have to replace them with nicer wood, or fill and sand them. Frick, your thread is making me even more **** as I start to finish out this garage. . .

Thanks to everyone for their kind words.

I don't have any to compare it to, but I have been quite happy with the two I have. I have recommended them to a few family members. I like the look of them too.

I am glad I finally got around to fixing that wood up. It was killing me how unfinished it was. My apologies for upping your ana........whoa, wait a minute.

I should have a few pics of recent jobs and changes tonight or tomorrow.

Rick, what kind of paint did you use to paint the lower cement black along the bottom of your garage walls?

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

I used a concrete paint from my local Rona (do you guys have Rona out East?)

http://www.rona.ca/en/paint---acrylic-floor-latex

It's okay. I will probably go over the lower stem every couple of years to spruce it up. It is very easy to apply with a big brush. I don't understand why the foundation was so roughly formed by the builder. I wish they were as smooth as the concrete walls in the rest of the foundation. They are about as smooth as the moon's surface.

Very nice layout. Does it have a developed basement as well? What do you use the "bonus" room above the garage for? Looks like a great spot for a home gym.

p.s. I'm a former Calgarian as well, i was up in the NW, Edenstone before the city change. Lots of family there still, wonderful place to be, i really hope your taking advantage of the skiing!

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

We have a plan to develop the basement in 4-5 years time. It will add another 900 square feet. The Bonus Room is set up as the family room. (Sectional, TV, boy's toys everywhere!).

The NW has just exploded. It's like another city up there. Can't say we are big skiers, but hopefully when our little guy gets a bit older we can hit the slopes. We are a 15-minute walk to Canada Olympic Park.

Haha! Thanks. I got some updated pics coming very soon. I've been painting and trimming for the past week or so and am just about done. Stay tuned. It is actually working out to be a perfect training ground for future jobs on the basement.

I'm pleased to report that the HVAC guy was able to achieve everything I asked him to. He was able to angle the tube and rework the ducting. Would have preferred he did it like this in the first place, but I have to take some responsibility for that since I didn't give him my specific installation preferences. Nonetheless, I am happy now:

As you can see in these photos, the run is less convoluted. The fan housing was rotated 90 degrees which allowed for a straighter run. Exhaust gases should have a more direct route to the outside without being hung up in the vertical run and various elbows. According to the SpaceRay tech I spoke with, these changes should equate to less wear and tear on the unit as a whole. He was concerned that the heat wasn't escaping at shut down and that heat would eventually warp the internals in the furnace unit.

While the ducting is obviously more efficient, it was more aesthetically pleasing in its original design... To bad you had to change it.

The angle change on the unit must also improve efficiency

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

I agree. It did look better, but I took a page from the Red Room garage and painted the ducting. It is way more comfortable with the tilt. I'm glad I took the advice given by other members and had the tube angled.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

I've been busy.

Installed a 50' air hose reel:

IMG_7773 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

IMG_7805 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Completed work on my rolling "Mobil 1" Craftsman cabinet:

IMG_7798 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

IMG_7800 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Lots of painting. I did a coat of drywall primer when we moved in, but never got around to painting, so I finally got around to applying a white coat of acrylic latex. This meant taping off all the decals and graphics. Lots of painters tape. I also did the ceiling above the tube heater in a very dark grey as well as the window wall. Looks sharp.

IMG_7788 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

IMG_7777 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

IMG_7779 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Painted the garage door a lighter shade of grey. Had to work around all those hinges. It really brightens the space up. I removed my detailing product decals and painted the bulkhead:

IMG_7786 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Painted the heater ducting, gas line, and conduit:

IMG_7780 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

IMG_7781 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Decided to remove all the decals on the back wall. I had to do quite a bit of drywall repair prior to painting since some of the decals weren't very cooperative.

IMG_7783 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Sink arrived. I'm hoping to have it installed on the back wall soon.

IMG_7801 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

This is where I will be installing it:

IMG_7775 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

I'm very happy I found something that won't take up a huge amount of space but will give me a usable place to wash up.

IMG_7802 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

All the prep and painting meant I had a lot of dusting to do. Wiped down everything in the garage and reorganized a bit:

IMG_7796 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

I removed the "KIA" decal from the wall. Will be mounting some brushed aluminum raised letters thanks to a very helpful member who helped me source them.

IMG_7795 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

IMG_7784 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Swapped out the photos I had hanging in the wide red stripe. I have "Audi" raised letters coming soon.

IMG_7776 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Looks a lot cleaner:

IMG_7792 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Installed a overhead extension cord reel. The wires above the door opener were a tangled mess. I used some cheap plastic conduit to clean it all up as well as installing some plates to give it a more finished look:

IMG_7790 by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

I installed a 3" base trim around the entire stem wall. I caulked it top and bottom to stop any moisture from penetrating the gaps. I used a total of 51' of base trim. Painted it the same light grey color used on the "Kia" wall, window trim, and garage door.

Now, it's just a matter of getting the sink installed. Thanks for viewing.

You have been busy and it shows! It does look alot cleaner without the sponsor decals on the rear wall. Looks awesome.

Even if I could get my garage that well organized and tidy, it wouldn't last a day. I will just be content if I can manage my sort of semi organized clutter filling every available space.

Nice work. Can't wait to see how the new logos work out. Get that Armor All **** out of there. . .its scaring the other detailing products. . .
I've probably had those bottles for 4 or 5 years, but just can't bring myself to throw them away...even though they are garbage. I'm pumped to see how the raised logos work, too. I might even remove the Kia "oval" and hand paint it instead. I just want to be sure the letters fit inside first.

You have been busy and it shows! It does look alot cleaner without the sponsor decals on the rear wall. Looks awesome.
Thanks Derrick. I'm having a bit of difficulty getting used to how stark the walls seem, but placing decals on primer was a rookie move on my part. I had no idea primer was so fragile. What can I say? I was naive.

I love your garage, lots of inspiration!
Awesome. I have taken a lot of inspiration from others since joining GJ. I am following your Vegas thread quite closely. I think you have a lot of potential for something bold with the unique bulkheads you have at the back of your garage. Interested to hear how your cabinet shopping goes.

Nice spread
Cheers. Thanks for visiting.

Fantastic Garage! Love your Mobil 1 cart may have to steal that one.
Thanks. I thought it was a good way to give a pretty boring cabinet a bit of life. I am modeling the other one I have after my favorite detailing product dealer. That's the project you see on the top of the red Craftsman. Should have that all put together this evening.

Holy hell, was there a teacher strike in Cowtown i missed on the news? You definitely got a lot of solid work done, Wiser's salute to you sir.
I have been logging some hours in there for sure. I almost pulled an all-nighter this weekend. I hate having to clean up when painting, so the longer I can stay at it, the better. Thanks for the salute. I hope I earned a "slow clap", too.

Just checked back on this thread. All I can say is 'WOW'. Well done sir.
I appreciate that. Thanks.

What can I say? It's a gift. (or a curse)

Rick you sure have been busy. You've done a lot of nice work.

Thanks. It wasn't the most fun of jobs, but it does make a big difference just going a shade or two lighter. I am now contemplating what do with the garage door hardware. Do I leave it? Do I paint it? If I do, what color?

I would leave the garage door hardware in its natural state. It goes with all of the aluminum shelving you have, while not sticking out in any way. An since you are an obvious perfectionist, imagine all of the chipping you will get on the moving parts of the door and tracks.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

BRAVO! You are obviously having fun adding the final 'polish' to an already gleaming garage. lol

Just went back to the pics on post #1; what an amazing transformation! Somewhere on a wall or on the garage side of the house door, you might consider framing a 8x10 glossy of the first pic you posted. That way, every time you pass by that picture, you will feel a sense of pride and it'll give you reason to grin from ear to ear. :D

I really like the design of the sink and it should work well for your clean-up needs in that corner, but I'm still rooting for the SS wall/backsplash with the water tank catch basin to make it a super-duper cleaning station. My $0.02

Any plans for Ikea cabinets or similar to store your various plethora of detailing chemicals? If nothing else, a cabinet would 'hide' that Armour-All from detractors.

As to your Kia oval, since you are going to put up some 3-D letters, maybe you'd want to go crazy with a SS oval as a backing and some indirect neon/LED lighting on a surround? I know it's a pi$$-poor visual, but imagine a largish SS oval shaped hospital 'pig' with the lettering mounted inside and the lighting concealed beneath the 'rim'.
