Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Ompha, you always give excellent feedback:

Just went back to the pics on post #1; what an amazing transformation! Somewhere on a wall or on the garage side of the house door, you might consider framing a 8x10 glossy of the first pic you posted. That way, every time you pass by that picture, you will feel a sense of pride and it'll give you reason to grin from ear to ear.

That's something I will definitely do.

I really like the design of the sink and it should work well for your clean-up needs in that corner, but I'm still rooting for the SS wall/backsplash with the water tank catch basin to make it a super-duper cleaning station. My $0.02

The final decision will depend on what my BIL is capable of, and willing to do. I'm not allowed to spend any more money in the garage (says "she") so I'm at the mercy of what he can pull off. Will definitely keep you posted, though!

Any plans for Ikea cabinets or similar to store your various plethora of detailing chemicals? If nothing else, a cabinet would 'hide' that Armour-All from detractors.

I don't think so. I like having them out in the open, otherwise I lose track of what I have. Truth be told, I do use Armour All on the mat in the back of my SUV. There's no way I am going to waste quality product on a trunk!

As to your Kia oval, since you are going to put up some 3-D letters, maybe you'd want to go crazy with a SS oval as a backing and some indirect neon/LED lighting on a surround? I know it's a pi$$-poor visual, but imagine a largish SS oval shaped hospital 'pig' with the lettering mounted inside and the lighting concealed beneath the 'rim'.

I've never held on to a car that long to commit to such a scheme!

Amazing work, god knows how you find the time! I'm still stalled on trying to find garage uppers.

Thanks. I'll definitely be taking a break. As for the uppers, just go with your gut man. Go with your gut.

I completed my customization of my other boring grey Craftsman rolling cabinet. It is a homage to my favorite detailing product dealer. It's a flat white color, but the photo makes it look more grey.

I went through the States. I just checked out the Racedeck Canada site, and that is the same price I paid per tile. Good to see there are more options for us Canucks. When I was researching, ALL my leads were from the US.

Okay, yea i kinda thought you went with the States option. Their site is 10x better, and customer service thus far has been great. But with the $170 shipping and associated fees I'm trying to see if there is a closer option.

Also just found another company that awaiting a quote from:

I went through a company called Cartwheel Factory. They were awesome and the shipping was very reasonable. Guy's name was James. I can't remember if I sent you a PM about that, or not. Anyway, once you have your floor, you won't give a second thought to the shipping charges.

Hahaha, and so you did, just looked them up and saw a pic of your garage. Nice promotion for them.

Hey Rick, with that freeflow style floor can you still use a floorjack and jack stands?

No, I would not recommend the use of a floor jack or jack stands with the Free Flow style RD tiles. I did it the first time and the jack just sank into the tile. Presently, I rip a section out so I don't damage the tiles. You could always do a combination of Free Flow and solid tiles in the areas where you would use your jack/jackstands.

Rick, do you have a creeper or detailing seat? I use one all the time when I am detailing or doing brakes. I am just wondering how well it would roll on the free flow floor?

Hi I am wondering where you got the 50ft compressor hose reel? Princess Auto?

I am totally impressed with your attention to detail, no pun intended. The garage looks fantastic! Nice cars too. That Audi is sweet. Subscribed!

Thanks Duck. I definitely have the GJ to thank for a lot of the ideas and motivation behind the details. I also have this forum to thank for reinforcing some OCD tendencies. My garage is quickly reaching a point where there isn't much left for me to do. I have some signs coming and I just ordered two 20x28 vintage Audi-themed posters that I will frame and mount.

After that, I still have a sink to install.

Thanks for the compliment on the Audi. It's coming up on 4 years old and it has been (knock on wood) amazingly reliable, practical and enjoyable.

I got mine through Princess Auto for $39.99 plus tax and shipping. Came out to $57.16 and I didn't have to get up off the couch!

Hey Rick, does the black look noticeably dirtier then the alloy grey before you clean the floor?

Wow, this is a dream garage for sure. Perfect work!

Thanks. It is a nice place to waste some time.

The black tiles do show a bit more dirt and dust than the alloy, but I've never been bothered by it. Nothing a quick mop can't solve. The red is the best at hiding any dirt.

Understandable, needed to replace mine and knew my next shop's color scheme was gonna be bottom half grey, white upper, with blue stripe seperating. So I wanted the blue hose anyways.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

I've been getting a few questions regarding my garage paint scheme. All of my paint was purchased through the Canadian home renovation store "Rona". Here's the swatch I used for the two darker shades of grey. I have the darkest colour (4311-3) on the ceiling above the tube heater and window wall. The next color (4312-3) is what I used on the TV wall and house door. Both are acrylic latex in Eggshell finish:

I am in the process of unifying the rest of the light grey into this color:

sico by 55cadillacking, on Flickr

Currently, the Tire Rack/KIA wall is a slightly different grey (lost the code) than the grey I have recently used to finish the back of the garage door and the space above.

Here's the chip I used for the red accents:

The code is 110-55 / H07

I had to rush through this thread as I was dying to know how the floor held up to the winter weather. It looks good! I'm really impressed with that flooring product. How much cleaning goes into keeping it that way?

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

That's a bit tricky to answer. What I think is a "little" is probably quite a bit more to the average guy. When we experience a lot of snow, and a lot of guck gets tracked in the garage, the floor traps and keeps the water, but the tiles end up becoming caked in mud and salt. I have a heated garage so it dries pretty quickly and I vacuum up the rocks and mop the tiles. That's a daily affair when things are messy outside.

Lately, we've been dry and I haven't touched the floor in a week and it looks 90%. All I really need to do is mop where the car's tire tracks come in and out and it will be back up to 100% in a matter of minutes.

The way I see it, you can have a solid concrete floor and you will have a mess in no time. At least with the Free Flow, the water is kept at bay. The rocks can build up, but that's no different than a standard floor.

So, to make a long answer even longer, I find it a simple process to keep it clean year-round, but what I consider simple makes the vast majority of my neighbor's shake their head.

I have a couple of those Suncast storage shed/lockers around the side of the house and I keep the garbage and recycling bins around the side too. The only non-car-related stuff I keep in the garage is the little guy's stroller and bike carrier. I'd eventually like to get those around the house as well, but I can live with them (for now)!

Ah yea those are key, a necessity in my next place for sure.

BTW I'm blaming you for one of my projects today. Started an accent wall hahah. Don't worry i love the inspiration and ideas that I'm able to poach.

What can you do, to each their own right.... Did you decide what your doing with that spot since you took the kia out of the circle?

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Yeah, I'm not too fussed by the criticism. Funny thing is, I'm a TOTAL car snob (or was). But, when you have $30k to spend on a car that needs to meet the needs of your family, a LOT of brands are automatically out of the equation. Plus, the 273 bhp is enough to keep a grin on this 41-year-old father's face!

As for the Kia oval, I'm waiting for the raised letters to arrive. I need to size them up. If they fit in the oval, the decal comes off and I will paint the actual oval. If the letters are too large, I will probably remove the decal and repaint the entire wall (minus the red stripe). I do not have any extra of the paint that I originally used for that "Kia" wall, so I am going to unify things for once and for all. I'm making this sound way more complicated than it is, but hopefully that makes sense.

Makes sense. Now eagerly waiting to see it come to fruition. The raised lettering concept has intrigued me since seeing EMC2's garage build.

"The Notorious KIA Garage" - I should rename my thread! In all seriousness, I would question a massive KIA sign on a garage wall, too. Difference is, I would probably just keep it to myself.

Rick, I'm local to you in Calgary and was wondering where you got the sheet of stainless steel that you made your floormat station out of and (if you don't mind) what the rough cost was. I want to make the bottom half of the garage walls "splash proof"; originally looked at stainless steel tiles but the cheapest I have found is $12.00/sqft (not incl. shipping) and I'm hoping I can find something a little cheaper.

Hi TiFJ,
I got the aluminum sheets through my HVAC guy. I think it cost me $200 iirc. If you want, I could put you in contact with him. Just let me know.

The seller is an awful communicator. I wish I could say they were on the way, but I'm not quite sure.
