Wow , just Wow

Hey Rick, fellow Audi fan here and your garage is my absolute favorite here!

Thanks guys. I'm grateful for the accolades. Considering it's a suburban 2-car garage in a "cookie cutter" neighborhood, it's quite gratifying to receive such positive feedback.

I don't really do anything involving automotive fluid, but for someone who does, this floor does come apart in sections quite easily. Any fluid would flow under the tiles (thus the name FreeFlow), so you'd avoid slopping around in the mess, but the clean up would require some panels being unsnapped. I've documented the process a few times in previous pages.

Glad to hear it made an impression. I'm currently trying to find a plumber to install a sink, since my cousin is flaking on me. It's tough finding someone in my city since it's in a constant building boom.

And to think i thought you were just slacking..................... lol........

I've got a couple Aunts who live there and echo the same opinion whenever they need (which is often) a contractor to do some renovations. New builds seem to steal all the labour.

Rick,

How as the racedeck held up for you? Have you used a floor jack and/or jack stands on it much?

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

I'm in the process of hunting down a thick and durable rubber mat that I can throw down under my floor jack. I made the mistake of jacking my car once, and I had to get some replacement tiles since it gouged them pretty bad. I know some people have used their jacks and stands with FF, but I won't try that again.

Has anyone seen the newest season of Overhaulin'? They have a SwissTrax FF system with a section of heavier duty tiles under the car. I am playing with the idea of doing a 4' x 8' section of solid tiles in the center of the garage, but I would hate to go through all of that and not be pleased with the end result.

Not really a pain. In fact, painting is cathartic for me. I have spent countless hours in there getting my paint scheme to where it is now. I still want to put a nice coat of white on the ceiling. That will be my big job for the summer. It does take a lot of time and patience plus a good amount of quality tape!

Where is the Audi?

Driveway. Too dirty to look at.

At first, I thought it was a mat they threw down over the tiles, but last episode "El Camino", they showed it a bit closer. Looked like actual HD tiles, but they were 1/2 the thickness of the Free Flow style ones everywhere else in the shop. They interviewed the dude, but they didn't go into detail.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Just use some ply wood, cheap and easy!

I'm not sure you would be happy with the daily look of a section of different tiles. This way you can EASILY just bring out the wood when needed without it being a daily distraction or a production to set-up. I have to do the same thing on my driveway as the asphalt caves with the pressure of a jack.

Cool. I have tossed around the idea of a plank of wood, but I may check out this Industrial Plastics place. Why spend $2, when you can spend $200?!

Thanks "Calgary".

From this point on, there's only slight modifications. Latest changes involve a couple new shelves, a fire extinguisher, and painted the garage door rails and supports. Other than those subtle changes, I have just been keeping her clean and pristine.

Wow. Amazing shop.

Thanks, guys. I'm glad there are people out there who appreciate the little things as much as I do.

I don't know if I would use the term "brilliant" for this one. It was way more work than I thought it would be. I just used the same paint that I have on the ceiling above my tube heater. It's the darkest shade I have in the garage. I do like the way it looks, but painting with a small brush was quite tedious. It probably would have been smarter to use some sort of spray paint, but it would have required a sophisticated masking job that I just didn't have the patience for. If you do decide to tackle a job similar to this, be prepared for some late nights!

I think your running low on car cleaning chemicals....

Nice job painting the rails and supports. I've been toying with that idea since i saw one guy on the forum who paid for all white rails which looked really nice. I'm wondering if the paint on the inside of the rails would get worn off with the rollers though.

Dub, there is a thin line that the roller has scratched away. But, it's quite thin, and it is hidden along the horizontal section of rail by the curved shape of the rail. It is barely noticeable on the vertical sections unless you get up real close to inspect. I think I know what thread you were referring to with the painted rails. It was one of those dream garages. I believe the guy had them powdercoated red. This is a much more "homemade" solution.

That's dedication! I think painting them is as far as I'd go (when ever I get there). I think Rick's looks GREAT!

Yeah, I had a different garage in mind. I can't remember off hand, but it was a project along the lines of Don Long's massive retro build. Now that it's on my mind, I'll be searching the forum for hours trying to track it down.

EDIT: Found it! It is post #49 in Odis's "Never Ending Retirement Garage".

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

All this fussing with the garage door has me contemplating a re-staining. I like the natural tone of the current stain, but my mind's eye wonders what a slightly darker door would look like. I'd have to also re-stain the shingles up top to match. The one lighter piece on the right has always been a thorn in my side. We added some "carriage" hardware this past winter to give it a different look. I think it turned out quite nice.

I just finished cleaning it all up.

I'm also contemplating resealing the aggregate driveway. I've had a couple of quotes and it's way more than I expected. One guy does two coats of sealer, but the other guy claims that ends up looking "murky" so he only does one. Decisions decisions...

"one guy"? You act like I'm some weird stranger on the forum lol.

That's why you powdercoat the tracks, they hold up well. With the plastic track wheels they just glide up and down the track, so the inside on my tracks are still like new.

Yeah, I had a different garage in mind.
No love from the King.

The black supports do look really good, great job.

Ditto on Rockuf8's comment. Your garage door is SO nice.. I didn't realize it was real wood until I read through Ricks' thread. I don't know that I've ever seen one like this before, I think it's too hot and too dry here in the Phoenix area to have something like that. I also agree a little darker would look nice.

Rick,

Unfortunately, exposed aggregate does need to be re-sealed periodically - some say every year, but I'm more on the 2-3 year laziness plan.

I go to Northland Construction in the NE (on about 27th Ave NE) and buy the stuff they have in the 5 gal pail. Comes in semi and high gloss - I bought the high gloss a couple of weeks ago - I think it's called North High Gloss in a black 5 gal can. A little under $150 I think. Give the driveway a good pressure wash, let it dry til the next day and roll on the sealer. And catch a good buzz (that stuff is riiiiipe). 5 gal is enough to do my driveway (which looks longer than yours) and my back patio.

Cheers,
Keith
