Here's a little peak into my OCD, I actually remove all the tiny rocks that become embedded in the tread prior to putting the carriers on. Only takes about an hour.

I guess i'm also in trouble, i thought this was standard practice. I always do this as part of the thorough cleaning before seasonal storage.

Re: Rick's Double Garage in Calgary, CAN

Just to start, this is probably my favorite garage thread....I've gone through it a couple of times and still admire the attention to detail.

I'm planning a redo on my single garage and have been writing down notes and ideas while on holiday. I'm looking forward to getting started when i get back to Vancouver next week. I have a couple questions for you:

What made you choose that particular water hose reel? Did you consider the Rapid Reel? Or where you looking for a retracting one? Ditto for the extension cord reel? I have a crappy Suncast at the moment, which I will be replacing, but I have very limited room because of where I plumbed the hose bib. Did you ever consider a Gardena hose reel?
e

I've got a tight single and most hose reels were way too bulky as i found out in the stores, very deceiving with their online photos though. I have to say i love my Gardena reel that i picked up. You can check it out in my thread if your interested. Just saw one on sale right now at Canadian Tire when i was at one of my local shops this week.

As for the Racedeck FF it works great and all rollers i have tried work great. Floor jack, a large and heavy tool bench and a couple cabinets on rollers as well.

Standard practice for me as well...and on race tires as well! It's also a good way to inspect the tires before they are put away.

Thanks dubber...I've posted on your thread, as I figure that is the more appropriate place to discuss your single.

Shoot, anyone who has the patience and fortitude to wade through 35 pages of my thread deserves some pics. I have done more reorganizing this weekend. It is almost to the point where I can just sit back and relax. Almost...

I purchased a 50' retractable LED work light. It's a "Saber II Blade" by ATD Tools.

People probably think my garage never gets used as a garage, but this weekend I did perform a major detail on a friend's Altima. In total, I put 14 hours into it. It was a great chance to test out all the equipment and products I have been stockpiling lately. I think he will be quite happy with the result. I didn't do any "after" pics. I was too bushed and I needed to get it back to his place before the torrential rain started.

And, here's the kids wondering when they can come in:

That's where things currently stand. I don't foresee much happening in the near future. The retractable light was the final purchase for (hopefully) many months!

I want to come to your garage, move a couple of things on your towel racks about 6mm and wait to see how long you notice it was moved.

Also are all your items arranged alphabetically? if not you can do that this weekend.

Thanks. I am glad you still drop by to check things out.

Anything above 5mm, and I'd catch that instantly.

Also are all your items arranged alphabetically? if not you can do that this weekend.

I'll get right on that!

You know, I just now noticed the tool bar you installed directly under the Audi name on the wall (I'm sure it was there before, but I didn't notice it). Also, no more Oakley logo sticker? :(

Very nice job there.. I look at your garage and think to myself "there's hope, there's still hope"..

Ha! It's funny you would mention the Oakley decal. A friend of my wife's commented "I like how you have added some splashes of red around the space, like that Oakley sticker." Splashes? Then, I looked around and it did appear that I had purposely added little red accents here and there. So, the sticker had to go.

I extended that tool bar across that entire portion of the back wall. At first, it only went half way. I like the way it looks, but I LOVE the practicality of having my things so close at hand. Plus, I can now see what I have so I can stop ordering things I already have.

So it's not just me.. you did extend the bar recently? :) And it would be ok to have an Oakley logo somewhere.

I do really like the overall look and colour scheme of this garage
but it just would not work for me personally as my own ocd needs less stuff on show I would need to put all the bottles, brushes, cloths, tools in cupboard and draws as my ocd would be worried they got dusty.
I need clean lines too keep calm:lol:

Guilty! After spending 14 hours with that darn thing, I just wanted it gone. Plus, the storm clouds were moving in and I needed to get it across town in a hurry. Important thing is, he was happy with it.

Thanks Sunbimmer. I regularly drop by your charming garage as well. I love how polished and exact you European guys are with your spaces. Thing are always so immaculate.

The compressor I ended up choosing gets really good user reviews. I'll post a link to the Home Depot page below. You will see all the various technical specifications there. What impresses me about it is the impressive size to power ratio it gives me. 6.5 CFM @ 90PSI allows me to use my 1/2" impact. The tank is small so she runs a bit more, but I can live with that.

Here's the link: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Makita-5-2-Gal-Single-Tank-Air-Compressor-MAC5200/202713486#BVRRWidgetID (We pay about $100 more for it in Canada vs. the States)

Your garage is AMAZING! I really like what you've done to your space.

I'm glad you like it and thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it.

from what I can tell those are Ikea towel bars. Do they have a way to extend them or you made your own little extension coupler?

btw, I alway thought all you needed for detailing was soap, windex, water, towels and toothbrush. That is a buttload of products you have.
if you have time, what are your "go to" product usage for your basic detail. Say the vehicle is midly dirty. And not going for show room 16hr detailing job.

Think I may have mentioned before, but I do believe you have the best garage in your neighborhood to say the least. Could be that most of the other garages in the area might be used for storage of all the kids old toys, bikes, and just stuff they just don't quite know what to do with, but can't seem to let it go.......

Beautiful space and love your ability to organize. Think that Richard Griot would agree.

How do you like the retractable LED work light? I have been looking for something like this but don't want to buy some poor quality piece. The Saber II seems to be a pretty high quality piece, but just wanted to see how you like it before I buy one. Thanks! Great space by the way. I wish I had the ability to keep mine as nice as that!

Only the bars on the side wall have been extended out by an inch, because the spray bottles didn't sit right otherwise. The bars along the back are flush mounted so the various containers sit properly. It's a pretty slick system and I appreciate the flexibility it offers me for when I need to change things up.

Your basic detail query is a bit tough to answer since my regiment has become quite near and dear to my heart, but I'll try my best.

Car is cool and in the shade, begin:
1. Spray wheels with a safe wheel cleaner. Let it dwell for a few minutes depending on brand, agitate with wheel brush, rinse
2. Fill 5 gallon bucket with quality car wash soap (no Dawn or Joy) and one 5 gallon bucket with fresh water. Preferably each bucket has a grit guard in the bottom
3. Rinse car with hose
4. Use wash mitt on upper half of car using linear (not circular) motions
5. Regularly rinse wash mitt in fresh water bucket
6. Use second wash mitt on lower portion of car while rinsing in fresh water regularly
7. Use a quality drying towel to dry car (I prefer waffle-weave towels)
8. Once dry, I use Stoner Invisible Glass aerosol and a window cloth (tight fibers) to go over glass

That's the most basic wash I could ever recommend to someone. There's a number of added steps I include in my own routine (foam bath, car dryer, etc), but you asked for my "basic" so there she is.

It's a MAKITA , I love MAKITA....:headscrat , it's a shame they don't sell them over here.

Yes, I'm happy with the quality of the compressor so far. I would have to agree that Makita puts out a solid product. What compressor manufacturers do you guys have over there?

Thanks, Ody. I would hope Richard approves of my garage! God knows I've helped him ($$$) improve his! You are correct about the majority of garages in my neighbourhood. A small handful of them are dedicated to automotive passion. The rest are, like you say, home to kids toys and other stuff that doesn't have a home in the house. So sad!

I purchased a 50' retractable LED work light. It's a "Saber II Blade" by ATD Tools.

Honestly, I was not impressed with the weight of the unit. Compared to my Alemite extension cord reel, it felt quite light and flimsy. The light is quite effective itself, but for the price I paid, I don't think I'd give it a glowing recommendation. When I pull the light down, I just get a bit of cheap feeling. I have to admit, it's the only retractable light I've ever used, so take my criticism with a grain of salt. Part of me is wishing I splashed out on the Snap-On model I was eyeing, but it was quite a bit more dough. So, in conclusion, the light is pretty good, but the overall feel of everything doesn't leave me breathless.

Thanks for the compliment!

thanks for taking the time to post your wash tech.

Btw i hope your thread doesnt get hijcacked by people arguing that DAWN is the best car wash soap out there. I have seen it before and it gets ugly.

Not yet. The darn thing seems to be hung up at customs. They are probably trying to figure out what threat is poses to Canada! I'm hopeful it will arrive this week. I'll be sure to share my views once I test it out. Have you seen the YouTube video for it?

(I enjoy the German version more than the English one!)

Very nice garage. This thread was very informative for me on caring for a race deck floor. Thanks

Glad to hear it. I have been enjoying not having to perform so much maintenance since we are still experiencing dry summer weather. It can be a fair bit of work to maintain in the winter, but it is definitely worth the effort.

On a different note, my family has parted ways with our beloved Q7. It had just shy of 60K km's in 4 years and there wasn't a single mark on it. But, we put an order in for a new car which arrives in January so we will be down to the Kia until then. Once the new ride arrives, we will be parting with the Kia and we will become a single-car family. This will free up a lot of space in the garage!

New ride: (NOTE: European model shown. North American model gets 3.0T)

We ordered it in Volcano Red Metallic (as shown) so the garage theme still applies! Phew!

We put our order in last week for a '14 Audi SQ5 in Volcano Red Metallic. With the 3.0 Supercharged V6, it's a pretty potent compact SUV. It combines sportiness with practicality so it basically makes the Kia redundant. My wife and I work together so we don't need two cars. If, down the road, we need a second car, there's a few ideas kicking around in my head.

Wow, Volcano Red Metallic! That must be a 2014 color, I dont remember seeing it before, looks beautiful! Or maybe it was just available in S.. You are going to miss the Q7 size, but I guess the power from the SQ5 will help you quickly forget the Q7!

Thats going to be one long wait for you..

Sizewise, there is a significant difference. But, for what we need, there's nothing we did with the Q7 that we won't be able to do with the 5. Most hauling we ever do is a child's bike carrier. Still, I'm sure there will be occasions when I miss my hulk of a Q7.

Colourwise, we went back and forth between Volcano Red and Estoril Blue. I'm not going to lie, the garage colour scheme had a lot to do with the final choice. That, and the fact I love red cars.

Sidenote: My wife is not thrilled at the prospect of driving our lowered Kia for 4 months! Especially in the snow.

Well I hope customs releases it soon, I can just see them scratching their head "Well what the hell is it?" Look forward to your review on it, I watched the English version back when you mentioned you had purchased it .

That's one **** new vehicle I was going to ask if your colour choice was influenced by your garage and I see it was lol (I would have also), hopefully winter is mild until you take possession of it.

It's came down to Volcano Red vs Estoril Blue (Audi stole that name from BMW). Not sure what would have happened had my wife insisted on blue. Dodged that bullet.

Maintaining two vehicles to my standards isn't as easy and fun as it used to be. It will give me a bit of a breather in that respect.
